EDITOR’S NOTE (Nick Stamatakis). I am not sure the recent elections in Venezuela stand serious analysis. On the one side, you have Elon Musk leading the entire West in crying that the elections are rigged – as if rigging elections in America is an alien phenomenon. Or as if America has not interfered in a myriad of foreign elections in the last 60 or 70 years. The State Department followed suit by recognizing the opposition leader Edmundo Gonzalez Urrutia as the winner… I wonder what they would say if Russia and China had recognized Hillary as the winner in 2016 or Trump as the winner in 2020… On the other side, we hear reports that Russia has sent Wagner to protect Maduro…
Listening to all this rather comic news, brought many memories back to mind… First, my childhood neighbors in Pireaus, a big Greek immigrant family to Venezuela, who were coming back every summer – yes, there used to be a vibrant Greek community in Venezuela before the socialists took over… And more appropriately a beloved “Calypso” song by Harry Belafonte, “Matilda”!! “Ah! Matilda, she take me money and run Venezuela…” says the song in perfect Caribbean tongue… Enjoy!
