EDITOR’S NOTE (Nick Stamatakis). Few people know Turkey, particularly the Pontos area around Trebizond, as well as Savvas Kalnteridis, a distinguished son of Pontos. In this video below and in the recent article that follows in English and Greek, he updates us on the situation around the Panagia Soumela cancellation of August 15th. Particularly, he reminds us that:
- Panagia Soumela reopened in 2010 after almost a century, thanks to Russian-Greek businessman Ivan Savvides, a Duma (the Russian Parliament) member and a close friend of Vladimir Putin. Putin’s intervention reopened the monastery. (Parenthesis: In 2017, the Greek-American community made Ivan Savvides the Grand Marshall in our NYC Greek Independence Parade – please link to the photo with AB Demetrios and former mayor De Blasio).
- In 2010, 90% of the local population in Pontos, brainwashed by Turkish nationalism as they were, opposed the re-opening of Panagia Soumela. Now, 14 years later, 90% favor. What changed?
- Many did DNA tests and realized their Greek ancestry!! Even Erdogan himself is a Greek Pontian whose family comes from the village of Rize (Rizounta in Greek). The only difference is that they were Islamized, as many other millions of Greeks in Turkey were. The Turkish government, as Helleniscope reported, has recently banned DNA tests!!
- Greek soccer player Tassos Bakasetas, playing with Trabsonspor, reinforced these feelings.
- Therefore, Turkey now sees Panagia Soumela as a national security threat.

What Is Turkey Afraid Of In Trebizond?

Erdoğan gave permission for the first time for a patriarchal liturgy to be held at Panagia Sumela , in Trabzon , Pontus , in 2010 . In fact, at that time it was considered an event of global importance, since crews from the world’s largest television stations were present at the function and broadcast images.
We must note that the residents of the prefecture of Trebizond, regardless of the party they vote for, are fierce nationalists , since the Turkish state there made strenuous efforts to cover their Greek origins with Islam and Turkish nationalism.
When the service began , the local community in the prefecture of Trebizond was divided. According to the study of the comments on social media, half were in favor and half were against the operation.
As a result of time, the percentages changed dramatically in favor of those who believed that the liturgy was being performed properly, since the only positive results were the presence of thousands of pilgrims in the monastery of Panagia Sumela, which functions as a museum.
In this conversion, apart from the contacts that the residents of Trebizond had with the visitors from Greece for the liturgy of Panagia Sumela but for other reasons, let’s say leisure, various events and developments that took place during these 14 years also played a role.
Greek origin
Many thousands of citizens of the region took DNA tests, making sure that some of them opened the envelope with the results for the first time in front of the camera and revealed that their origin is Greek. This fact began to raise questions about the origin of the inhabitants of Pontos, and especially those of the prefecture of Trebizond.
The social media (SMS) broke down the walls and the inhabitants of the area began to communicate directly with the Greeks of Pontic origin. Especially those who speak the Pontic dialect, from the villages of Tonia, Katochorio, Sourmeni, Matsouka, began direct contact with Greeks of Pontic origin and an unmediated dialogue began. Pontian artists have a large share in the interest of the residents of Trabzon for the Greek Pontic events with the songs they post on MKD, mainly on YouTube . The comments one can read are truly incredible.
The Bakaseta effect
But what dramatically changed the opinion of the residents of Trabzon about the Greeks and Greece was the presence of Tasos Bakaseta in the city’s team, Trabzonspor , after the football player with his performance brought the championship to the city of Trabzon after three decades . We must underline that the entire society of the prefecture supports the team with passion and stubbornness. For the people of Trabzon, Trabzonspor can be more valuable than the homeland itself. Back then I followed the team’s official twitter account at every match and read thousands of comments. The conversion of the world was amazing. Then the Ecumenical Patriarch Mr. Bartholomew and the late Metropolitan of Drama Mr. Pavlos had blessed the group. Articles have been written that attributed the winning of the championship by Trabzonspor to the blessing of the Ecumenical Patriarch .
After all this, the Turkish deep state began to wake up , which considers that these searches of the people of Trebizond for their national identity and their contacts with the Elalises may create a peculiar minority problem in Turkey in the area in question. For this reason, the National Security Council of Turkey made a decision to ban entry to Turkey to Greek citizens who have contacts with residents in Trebizond. That is why dozens of Greeks were either deported from the Istanbul airport or were not allowed to enter through the border gate of Ypsala.
The “tricks” that the Turkish state has been doing in recent years and this year’s change of the date for the service – instead of the 15th, on the 23rd of August – are the result of these misgivings of the Turkish deep state. And the pressures will continue.

Τι φοβάται η Τουρκία στην Τραπεζούντα;

Ο Ερντογάν έδωσε για πρώτη φορά άδεια για να τελεστεί πατριαρχική θεία λειτουργία στην Παναγία Σουμελά, στην Τραπεζούντα του Πόντου, το 2010. Μάλιστα, τότε θεωρήθηκε γεγονός παγκόσμιας σημασίας, αφού στη λειτουργία ήταν παρόντα και μετέδωσαν εικόνες συνεργεία από τους μεγαλύτερους τηλεοπτικούς σταθμούς του κόσμου.
Πρέπει να σημειώσουμε ότι οι κάτοικοι του νομού Τραπεζούντας, ανεξάρτητα από το κόμμα που ψηφίζουν, είναι σκληροί εθνικιστές, αφού το τουρκικό κράτος εκεί κατέβαλε εργώδεις προσπάθειες να καλύψει την ελληνική τους καταγωγή με το Ισλάμ και τον τουρκικό εθνικισμό.
Όταν ξεκίνησε η λειτουργία, η τοπική κοινωνία στον νομό Τραπεζούντας ήταν μοιρασμένη. Όπως προκύπτει από τη μελέτη των σχολίων στα μέσα κοινωνικής δικτύωσης, οι μισοί ήταν υπέρ και οι μισοί ήταν κατά της λειτουργίας.
Προϊόντος του χρόνου, τα ποσοστά άλλαξαν δραματικά υπέρ εκείνων που θεωρούσαν ότι ορθώς γίνεται η λειτουργία, αφού μόνο θετικά ήταν τα αποτελέσματα από την παρουσία χιλιάδων προσκυνητών στο μοναστήρι της Παναγίας Σουμελά, που λειτουργεί ως μουσειακός χώρος.
Σε αυτή τη μεταστροφή, εκτός από τις επαφές που είχαν οι κάτοικοι της Τραπεζούντας με τους εξ Ελλάδος επισκέπτες για τη λειτουργία της Παναγίας Σουμελά αλλά για άλλους λόγους, ας πούμε αναψυχής, έπαιξαν ρόλο και διάφορα γεγονότα και εξελίξεις που έλαβαν χώρα αυτά τα 14 χρόνια.
Ελληνική καταγωγή
Πολλές χιλιάδες πολίτες της περιοχής έκαναν τεστ DNA, φροντίζοντας κάποιοι απ’ αυτούς να ανοίγουν τον φάκελο με τα αποτελέσματα για πρώτη φορά μπροστά στην κάμερα και να αποκαλύπτεται ότι η καταγωγή τους είναι ελληνική. Το γεγονός αυτό άρχισε να δημιουργεί ερωτήματα για την καταγωγή των κατοίκων του Πόντου, και ειδικά εκείνων του νομού Τραπεζούντας.
Τα μέσα κοινωνικής δικτύωσης (ΜΚΔ) έριξαν τα τείχη και άρχισαν να επικοινωνούν απευθείας οι κάτοικοι της περιοχής με τους ποντιακής καταγωγής Έλληνες. Ειδικά εκείνοι που μιλούν την ποντιακή διάλεκτο, από τα χωριά της Τόνιας, του Κατοχωρίου, των Σουρμένων, της Ματσούκας, άρχισαν τις απευθείας επαφές με τους ποντιακής καταγωγής Ελληνες και ξεκίνησε ένας αδιαμεσολάβητος διάλογος. Μεγάλο μερίδιο στο ενδιαφέρον των κατοίκων της Τραπεζούντας για τα ελληνικά ποντιακά δρώμενα έχουν οι Πόντιοι καλλιτέχνες με τα τραγούδια που αναρτούν στα ΜΚΔ, κυρίως στο YouTube. Τα σχόλια που μπορεί να διαβάσει κανείς είναι πραγματικά απίστευτα.
Η επίδραση του Μπακασέτα
Όμως, αυτό που άλλαξε δραματικά την άποψη των κατοίκων της Τραπεζούντας για τους Έλληνες και την Ελλάδα ήταν η παρουσία του Τάσου Μπακασέτα στην ομάδα της πόλης, την Τραμπζονσπόρ, αφού ο ποδοσφαιριστής με την απόδοσή του έφερε το πρωτάθλημα στην πόλη της Τραπεζούντας ύστερα από τρεις δεκαετίες. Πρέπει να υπογραμμίσουμε ότι σύσσωμη η κοινωνία του νομού στηρίζει την ομάδα με πάθος και πείσμα. Για τους Τραπεζούντιους η Τραμπζονσπόρ μπορεί να είναι ως αξία και πάνω από την ίδια την πατρίδα. Τότε παρακολουθούσα τον επίσημο λογαριασμό της ομάδας στο twitter σε κάθε αγώνα και διάβαζα χιλιάδες σχόλια. Η μεταστροφή του κόσμου ήταν εκπληκτική. Τότε είχαν ευλογήσει την ομάδα ο Οικουμενικός Πατριάρχης κ. Βαρθολομαίος και ο εκλιπών μητροπολίτης Δράμας κυρός Παύλος. Εχουν γραφτεί άρθρα που απέδιδαν την κατάκτηση του πρωταθλήματος από την Τραμπζονσπόρ στην ευλογία του Οικουμενικού Πατριάρχη.
Ύστερα από όλα αυτά άρχισε να ξυπνά το τουρκικό βαθύ κράτος, που θεωρεί ότι αυτές οι αναζητήσεις των κατοίκων της Τραπεζούντας για την εθνική τους ταυτότητα και οι επαφές τους με τους Ελάλησες μπορεί να δημιουργήσουν ένα ιδιότυπο μειονοτικό πρόβλημα στην Τουρκία στην εν λόγω περιοχή. Για τον λόγο αυτόν, το Συμβούλιο Εθνικής Ασφάλειας της Τουρκίας πήρε απόφαση να απαγορευτεί η είσοδος στην Τουρκία σε Έλληνες πολίτες που έχουν επαφές με κατοίκους στην Τραπεζούντα. Γι’ αυτό δεκάδες Ελληνες είτε απελάθηκαν από το αεροδρόμιο της Κωνσταντινούπολης είτε δεν τους επετράπη η είσοδος από τη συνοριακή πύλη των Υψάλων.
Τα «κόλπα» που κάνει το τουρκικό κράτος τα τελευταία χρόνια και η φετινή αλλαγή της ημερομηνίας για τη λειτουργία -αντί της 15ης, την 23η Αυγούστου- είναι αποτέλεσμα αυτών των ενδοιασμών του τουρκικού βαθέος κράτους. Και οι πιέσεις θα συνεχιστούν.
