On Wednesday, August 28, the documentary Odysseus Returns will premiere on PBS. (see related league https://nhpbs.org/schedule/series.aspx…
It took 33 whole years fighting with “gods” and “demons” until those people were found who decided to put their fingers “on the type of heels” and take on the burden of presenting a subject that is not at all easy when it literally balances “on a dry edge” between myth and history.
What is the boundary between myth and history and how much can we talk today about the “return of Odysseus” to the fatherland?
Each of us obviously has our own answers that are largely determined by our knowledge, by our beliefs and by what we “carry” inside us, with the footnote as the American philosopher Dr. Donald Davidson that: “If knowledge aims at the apprehension of truth, belief implies the possibility of error”
So the only way that would possibly help us to
to break free from the powerful shackles of our beliefs is to be able to understand that our beliefs do not always equate to knowledge and their truth must always be proven by overwhelming evidence
And because as our people say “the moment has come when the knot has reached the comb”, we are obliged to prove or justify what will be written, heard or implied starting from this documentary and especially from what will follow.
We will be completely honest with you. To none of our family and much less to the two of us
it was not easy to consent and publicly reveal part of our personal lives involved with this story.
But when the history of history seemed to be the necessary introduction to understand where and how we started and where and how we got to today we made the decision to speak on camera in the hope that this will help mainly to understand what took place with the hope that we will also contribute to the protection and promotion of a place that is certain that in the future it will be a life destination for those who will be able to visit it.
This is not the time to refer by name to those who have stood by us all these years but also to those who fought us by legitimate and illegitimate means. This will be done because it is necessary for the world to know the truth. But keep this in mind: when we arrived we were not alone, we had leading archaeologists and many dear companions, collaborators, volunteers and friends with whom we walked a lifetime. Some of them like Dr. Lazaros Colonas, Dr. Antonis Vassilakis and Dr. Ismeni Miliaresi you will “meet” them in these documentaries. We owe them so much that it is impossible to repay them. The misfortune is that today we are not all of us. During these 33 years, unfortunately, several of our comrades were lost along the way, forever passing through the gates of the Sun with their memory accompanying us.
In this announcement we will refer by name only to the executive protagonists of this series of documentaries to be released by the company Revelations Entertainment, a production of the leading actor Morgan Freeman who is also the narrator in the documentary of the relevant passages from the Homeric texts.

The American author, speaker and radio producer, of German and Greek (Cephalonian) descent Eric Metaxas and Ilena Kampouris Abatis played a decisive role in making this documentary.
We thank them all for their cooperation, love and support during the difficult four years it took to do the TV shoots, interviews and field visits to complete the shoot. Without them, the collective and personal struggle that each of them gave, it is certain that these documentaries would not have been made. They endured and in the end they won.
After all these experiences they have lived in Greece, we symbolically dedicate to them the last two lines from the poem Ithaca written by Konstantinos Cavafis: “So wise that you have become, with so much experience, you would already understand what Ithaca means.”

Χρειάστηκαν να περάσουν 33 ολόκληρα χρόνια παλεύοντας με “θεούς” και “δαίμονες” μέχρι να βρεθούν εκείνοι οι άνθρωποι που αποφάσισαν να θέσουν τα δάκτυλά τους “επί τον τύπον των ήλων” και να αναλάβουν το βάρος της παρουσίασης ενός θέματος που καθόλου εύκολο δεν είναι όταν ισορροπεί κυριολεκτικά “επί ξηρού ακμής” μεταξύ μύθου και ιστορίας.
Ποιο είναι το όριο μεταξύ μύθου και ιστορίας και πόσο μπορούμε να μιλούμε σήμερα για την “επιστροφή του Οδυσσέα” στην πατρώα γη;
Ο καθένας μας προφανώς έχει τις δικές του απαντήσεις που σε μεγάλο βαθμό καθορίζονται από τις γνώσεις μας, από τις πεποιθήσεις μας και από τα όσα “κουβαλάμε” μέσα μας, με την υποσημείωση όπως είχε πει ο Αμερικανός φιλόσοφος Dr. Donald Davidson ότι : «Εάν η γνώση έχει ως στόχο την σύλληψη της αλήθειας, η πεποίθηση υποδηλώνει την πιθανότητα του λάθους»
Ο μόνος τρόπος λοιπόν, που ενδεχομένως θα μας βοηθούσε να
απαγκιστρωθούμε από τα πανίσχυρα δεσμά των πεποιθήσεών μας, είναι να μπορέσουμε να κατανοήσουμε ότι οι πεποιθήσεις μας δεν ισοδυναμούν πάντοτε με γνώση και ή αλήθεια τους θα πρέπει πάντοτε να αποδεικνύεται με ατράνταχτα αποδεικτικά στοιχεία
Και επειδή όπως λέει ο λαός μας “ήλθε η στιγμή που ο κόμπος έφτασε στο χτένι”, είμαστε υποχρεωμένοι να αποδείξουμε ή να δικαιολογήσουμε τα όσα θα γραφούν, θα ακουστούν ή θα υπονοηθούν αρχής γενομένης από αυτό το ντοκιμαντέρ και κυρίως από τα όσα θα ακολουθήσουν.
Θα σας μιλήσουμε απολύτως ειλικρινά. Σε κανέναν από την οικογένειά μας και πολύ περισσότερο για τους δύο μας
δεν ήταν εύκολο να συναινέσουμε και να αποκαλύψουμε δημοσίως μέρος της προσωπικής μας ζωής που εμπλέκεται με αυτήν την ιστορία.
Όταν όμως η ιστορία της ιστορίας φάνηκε ότι ήταν η αναγκαία εισαγωγή για να γίνει κατανοητό από που και πως ξεκινήσαμε και που και πως φτάσαμε ως τα σήμερα πήραμε την απόφαση να μιλήσουμε on camera με την ελπίδα ότι αυτό θα βοηθήσει κυρίως για την κατανόηση των διαδραματισθέντων με την ελπίδα ότι θα συμβάλουμε και εμείς για την προστασία και την ανάδειξη ενός χώρου που είναι βέβαιο ότι στο μέλλον θα αποτελεί έναν προορισμό ζωής για όσους θα μπορέσουν να τον επισκεφτούν.
Δεν είναι η ώρα να αναφερθούμε ονομαστικά σε όσους στάθηκαν δίπλα μας όλα αυτά τα χρόνια αλλά και για όσους μας πολέμησαν με θεμιτά και αθέμητα μέσα. Αυτό θα γίνει γιατί είναι αναγκαίο να γνωρίζει ο κόσμος την αλήθεια. Κρατήστε όμως τούτο: εδώ που φτάσαμε δεν είμασταν μόνοι, δίπλα μας είχαμε κορυφαίους αρχαιολόγους και πολλούς αγαπητούς συντρόφους, συνεργάτες, εθελοντές και φίλους που μαζί πορευτήκαμε μια ζωή. Μερικούς από αυτούς όπως είναι ο Δρ. Λάζαρος Κολώνας, ο Δρ. Αντώνης Βασιλάκης και η Δρ. Ισμήνη Μηλιαρέση θα τους “συναντήσετε” σε αυτά τα ντοκιμαντέρ. Τους χρωστάμε τόσα πολλά που είναι αδύνατον να τους τα ανταποδώσουμε. Το δυστύχημα είναι πως σήμερα δεν είμαστε όλοι, Μέσα σε αυτά τα 33 χρόνια δυστυχώς αρκετοί από τους συντρόφους μας χάθηκαν στην πορεία περνώντας για πάντα τις πύλες του Ήλιου με την μνήμη τους να μας συντροφεύει.
Στην παρούσα ανακοίνωση θα αναφερθούμε ονομαστικά μόνο στους εκτελεστικούς πρωταγωνιστές αυτής της σειράς των ντοκιμαντέρ που θα κυκλοφορήσουν από την εταιρεία Revelations Entertainment, μια παραγωγή του κορυφαίου ηθοποιού Morgan Freeman ο οποίος είναι και ο αφηγητής στο ντοκιμαντέρ των σχετικών αποσπασμάτων από τα Ομηρικά κείμενα.

Καθοριστικό ρόλο για να γίνει αυτό το ντοκιμαντέρ είχε ο Αμερικανός συγγραφέας, ομιλητής και ραδιοφωνικός παραγωγός, με Γερμανική και Ελληνική (Κεφαλλονίτικη) καταγωγή Eric Metaxas και η Ilena Kampouris Abatis.
Τους ευχαριστούμε όλους τους για την συνεργασία, την αγάπη και την στήριξή τους αυτά τα δύσκολα τέσσερα χρόνια που χρειάστηκαν για να γίνουν οι τηλεοπτικές λήψεις, οι συνεντεύξεις και οι επισκέψεις επί του πεδίου για την ολοκλήρωση των γυρισμάτων. Χωρίς αυτούς, τον συλλογικό και τον προσωπικό αγώνα που έδωσε ο καθένας τους είναι βέβαιο πως αυτά τα ντοκιμαντέρ δεν θα είχαν γίνει. Άντεξαν και στο τέλος νίκησαν.
Μετά από όλες αυτές τις εμπειρίες που έχουν ζήσει στην Ελλάδα τους αφιερώνουμε συμβολικά τους δύο τελευταίους στίχους από το ποίημα Ιθάκη που έχει γράψει ο Κωνσταντίνος Καβάφης : ” Έτσι σοφός που έγινες, με τόση πείρα, ήδη θα το κατάλαβες οι Ιθάκες τι σημαίνουν.”
It has been shown recently and was truly a wonderfully done program, until towards the end when the Woke/DEI Mob poisoned the documentary by trying to equate the poetic verbal stylings of Homer’s ancient and profoundly historic tale with modern urban Rapping. Like graffiti on the Parthenon.
