Teasing Putin says Russia backs Kamala Harris, cites her ‘infectious’ laugh
VLADIVOSTOK, Russia, Sept 5 (Reuters) – Russia wants Kamala Harris to win the U.S. presidential election, President Vladimir Putin said on Thursday in a teasing comment that cited her “infectious” laugh as a reason to prefer her over Donald Trump.
Putin made the ironic remark a day after the U.S. Justice Department charged two Russian media executives over an alleged illegal scheme to influence the November election with pro-Russian propaganda.
Before President Joe Biden withdrew from the race, Putin had said earlier this year – in another comment widely seen as not to be taken at face value – that he preferred Biden over Trump because the former was a more predictable “old school” politician.
U.S. intelligence agencies believe Moscow actually wants Trump to win because he is less committed to supporting Ukraine in the war against Russia.
Asked how he viewed the election now, Putin told an economic forum in Russia’s far east that it was the choice of the American people. But he then added that as Biden had recommended his supporters to back Harris, “we will do the same, we will support her”.
Putin and the moderator were both smiling as he made the remark, which drew applause from the audience. Expanding on his view of Harris, Putin said: “She laughs so expressively and infectiously that it means that everything is fine with her.”
He added that maybe this meant she would refrain from further sanctions against Russia. By contrast, Putin said that Trump, as president, had introduced more sanctions against Russia than anyone in the White House before him.
“Ultimately, the choice is up to the American people, and we will respect that choice,” the Kremlin leader concluded.
U.S. intelligence has determined that Russia ran a disinformation campaign to boost Trump’s campaign against Hillary Clinton in the 2016 election and sought to undermine Clinton’s.
American culture supports laughing. Especially by women. That’s why people take care of their teeth and are pearly white. To a foreigner, especially a Russian strongman, it seems unusual and a sign that she might not be serious. Nothing further from the truth of course.
Looking at pictures from the past, people never smiled, when posing. The American custom of “say cheese” has spread all over the world. Now, even former communist states, such as China, are following the American example of smiling. Especially women. Putin’s attempt at denigration is an example of misplaced humor.
Lighten up Bob! Putin is laughing at the cackling in the same way we Americans who do not like her laughter at her cackling… We laugh because it’s the most fake laugh you can hear and it usually hides her inability to respond to serious questions…

Of course, neither you nor I, or Putin can tell when or if her laugh is not sincere. It could be faked as you’re saying. But women are expected to always smile. And laugh. During the democratic convention, a FOX newsman took Hilary to task for not smiling or laughing. Then, another FOX newscaster took Kamala to task for laughing and smiling too much. It is expected of women, republican or democrat, to smile. Have you heard of the term RBF? If her laugh sounds as “cackling” to some, she certainly can’t change it. Its part of her nature.
Don’t think I’m defending her. I just think its really trivial to be concerned about her laugh and hold it against her. More important things need to be considered in choosing a presidential candidate. And of course, Putin’s opinion does not matter. The article that you published made it clear, that he wants her to loose. So, he is denigrating her laugh.
I wouldn’t trust Putin as far as you can throw him! Where are his morals and ethics now? Or is this an indication that the Dems will win and he knows it?
