I would think telling Putin that he’ll do away with sanctions is giving away the store with no compensation. Nick praises Trump for his business acumen, but this “deal” certainly doesn’t sound so smart to me. I would suggest that Trump demands something in return. Sanctions are the only means, short of declaring war, that America and her allies can “punish” aggressive behavior, such as Russia’s and Iran’s.
A nation can not be run like a business. It needs to take into consideration so many other factors, that a business doesn’t have to worry about.
Bob – come to your senses. Trump says the self-evident: The sanctions backfired and instead of hurting Russia the hurt the West and especially the US. Trump was very specific: because of the sanctions we risk losing the “reserve currency” status of the US Dollar. What don’t you understand of this simple, common sense, thought? Sanctions are not hurting the US economy. It is increasing at a nice 2.3% clip. Inflation is coming down. Gas is at $2.99 in Jersey. Unemployment is nil. Please, point out any indicators of the US economy being affected. As a matter of fact, the ban on Russia’s natural gas has been a boon to US producers. And the added benefit is that Western Europe is being withdrawn from dependence on Russian energy sources. Germany’s manufacturing prowess was depended on Russian energy. They are now finding other sources.
Yes. There are attempts to do away with the US dollar as a world currency. . Just as the West wants energy independence, other nations want to have dollar independence. I dont blame them. But I have not heard from any economists that lifting sanctions on Russia would impede the fall of the dollar. Currencies come and go. The British pound was the world currency until 1950. Now it isn’t.
