EDITOR’S NOTE (Nick Stamatakis). There are a few “black” memorial days in the Greek calendar, and one of them is September 27, the assassination of Ioannis Kapodistrias, “the Saint” of Greek political history, the man who gave everything he had for the establishment of an independent Greece.  His memory is alive among all those who truly love Greece, all of us.  It is so alive that the award-winning director Yiannis Smaragdis (“El Greco,” “God Loves Caviar,” Kazantzakis”) is halfway done filming his new – and most important – film on the life of Kapodistias. Many tried to undermine the movie’s production, but it will be finished with the support of all of us – stay tuned!!).

The most significant part of Kapoditrias’ life is his vision for Greece – as it was revealed by historical research in the archives of Metternich, his archenemy: “Greece must be unanimously declared by the Great Powers a country dedicated exclusively to the Sciences and the enlightenment of the human race, its territory to be declared inviolable from the outside, but internally to be kept at a distance from all of foreign admixture…. finally, Greece must be proclaimed for all mankind a Holy State, a center of education for all Nations!”

In memory of our Governor

Ioannis Kapodistrias was the man sent by God when he decided to free the Greek nation from the shackles of the Ottoman tomb. And they killed him…

By Panagiotis Liakos

On this day, in 1831, foreign powers used Greek-speaking actors to “break” the Greek race towards the destinies of our race by murdering Ioannis Kapodistrias. We don’t forget. We honor the memory of the heroes and martyrs of our Nation, by words, works, prayers, supplications, and texts.

On this day in 1831, foreigners were able, for the time being, to stop the attack of the Greek nation toward the future it deserved. The miracle of the Uprising, which so terrorized the East and (mainly) the West, was crowned with a man, Ioannis Kapodistrias. The authority granted to this chosen one of the faith was a gift from the Lord to our Nation in recognition of our sacrifices in favor of faith and country. He came here, and he ached for our sufferings, he hungered with us and wept for the poverty and insanity that had spread over this small-bitter and divine piece of land, which he managed, with the Lord’s help, to escape from its bonds Ottoman tomb. They buried us, and we escaped, with the help of God, who decided to take our first steps under the guidance of a unique Greek. From the course of this saint of politics and diplomacy, we must retain much. One of them is what he said about traitors who like foreign orders in the conversation he had in 1828, in Aegina, with George Mavromichalis, his later assassin: “I am going down as a warrior to the stadium, I will fight as a government, not I am mistaken for the love of privilege planted in the souls of many, the daydreams of learned foreigners of practical life, the suspicious, domineering and careless of foreign men. The victory will be ours, if our heart reigns, God is jealous, only the Greek feeling, the friend of foreigners is a traitor”.

In the year 2024, we understand very well what Kapodistrias meant. The article is dedicated to the memory of the saint of our tribe.

  1. There they go again. It is never us, Greeks. The most saintly nationality in the world. It was “others”, foreigners, intent on undoing Greece that armed the Mavromichalis brothers, Maniates
known for their vendetta, who wanted no part of paying taxes and had revolted against a fledgling Greek nation.

Unless and until we recognize that it is us that have committed some of the most heinous crimes against our own countrymen and Greece itself, we will never grow up as a nation. The 1821 revolution was almost lost due to Greek against Greek fighting. Rumeliotes, who descended on Pelloponisos in 1827 were burning, raping, killing and pillaging worse than Ibrahim Passas. The 1944-1949 civil war killed more Greeks than the Germans. More villages were burnt and anything that had remained standing from the German occupation. Asia minor was abandoned to the Turks because the Greek army was so demoralized, they had given up fighting and left the Greek civilians to the Turks. Cyprus lost 35% of its territory because of the Greek junta.

We have seen the enemy and it is us.

    • That’s mostly correct Bob – but take a look at the map: Greece and Turkey is the most valuable geopolitical real estate on the planet. You mean to tell us that foreign powers don’t have a hand in an assassination like this? Just a few years ago the CIA made an assassination attempt against Greek PM Karamanlis!! Yes we accept the blame for our actions but we do not close our eyes to the facts!

      • Nick
There is no evidence that any foreigner was involved in Kapodistria’s assassination. This writer is claiming foreign involvement with no proof . Other times there was foreign involvement.

        • There is no evidence that the CIA attempted to assassinate Karamanlis and Erdogan – because they destroyed the evidence and they covered their tracks and forced the justice system to silence. But does anyone doubt it?

  2. There has been a folk belief in Greece that the death of the ill Ioannis Metaxas in Jan 1941 was deliberately hurried along by British medical personnel, in the hope that a more pliable successor would better serve British interests.

    • Let’s mention the other “folk belief”, too…:)
A civil war broke out immediately after the end of WW2 (Greek vs. Greek). There were plenty of Greeks around even in Alexandria & Cairo who didn’t like Metaxas to begin with and who later participated in or supported the Communist side…the unanswered question is, was his illness natural, or could someone have served him “tainted tea”, like that guy in London who drank the polonium special, or like the 33 year old Alexander the Great 2250 years earlier, who some still theorize was poisoned by one of the ones he trusted?

Of course, various “official medical reports” claim Metaxas was depressed, heartbroken in exile, didn’t eat / sleep well, etc, got bitten by some north African mosquito, and naturally became ill…

      • Thanks for the additional material. i will make a little correction, however. Metaxas did NOT die in exile, he died in Athens in Jan 1941, at a time when Greece had heroically thrown back the Italian invasion. He was under British medical “care” at that time.

  4. The fact all the evidence and documents of this case is still classified by the Greek government speaks volumes. If it was a simple open shut case the way they present it, there would be no reason to keep documents and evidence on this case classified for almost 200 years. Mavromihalis didn’t assasinate Kapodistria, it was done by British and French agents. As far the comments about Metaxas is concerned, he was also poisoned by the British because didn’t want to continue fighting and having Greeks continue to be killed when there was no way of Greece defeating the axis invaders at that point in time. The British however didn’t care about Greek lives and just wanted any form of resistance to continue.
