Helleniscope has referred several times to the grand lady, the “Queen Mother” of Greek shipping, the great Cephalenian, Athenα (Nounou) Martinou, who passed away on Friday at 97. Her funeral will be held tomorrow at Panagia Faneromeni in Glyfada, near her home and the company’s offices in Athens. Knowing how Greeks feel on such occasions, this will not be a typical funeral but a big celebration of her life. In one of our posts, we referred to a gathering of most shipowners and many friends three summers ago at her summer house in Schinousa, a little island in the middle of the Aegean, to celebrate her 94th birthday (link here). Everyone arrived on their yachts, and it was a spectacle to see… Athena was the wealthiest European woman and maintained a friendship with Queen Elizabeth, although she was always keen to keep a low profile… Her passion for the sea, her patriotism, her devotion to shipping, her deep faith, all these elements defined her Hellenic identity in an inexorable way. She was always open to offering her guidance and invaluable experience to the newcomers to shipping, and she is rightfully considered the “Queen Mother” of the modern Greek maritime industry… May she rest in peace! We lost one of the greatest Hellenes, but as I said, no tears are in order… I have no doubt she would rather have a big party like the ones only Greeks know how to give…

Athena (Nounou) Martinou, the strongest woman in Greek shipping and one of the pioneers in the international maritime industry, passed away on Friday night at the age of 97. Athina (Nunou) Martinou, entered shipping in 1964. In 1971, she founded the shipping giant Thenamaris.She was a woman of social sensibilities who kept a low profile and avoided publicity and display of wealth.
In 1971, she made the decision to deal with the management of the ships of her family, Methenitis. Together with her sons, Thanasis, Dino and Andreas, she founded the company Thenamaris Ships Management.In 1975, the fleet consisted of 36 ships.
In 1991, Athena decides to hand over the reins to her children. Thanasis Martinos leaves the company to create Eastern Mediterranean Maritime.
In 1997, Andreas followed his own path, and proceeded to establish Minerva Marine, leaving Dino at the helm of the parent company Thenamaris. At Minerva, his son Andreas, Andreas jounior, has now taken over and at Thenamaris, Nikolas Martinos, son of Dinos.
In an interview about how she fell in love with the sea, on the show Ainanautes, Athina Martinou said: “I am from Kefalonia, but the fact that I was born in Glyfada played a role in my love for the sea and I used to watch the ships pass by and say to my friends: “and we will make steamers and we did. We were mad about it and we did it and the whole family had a blast” and continued:
“In this effort, I was not alone. My husband was close to me from the first moment, but mainly it was my son Thanasis, who from the age of fourteen was doing statistics and writing down how many crew, what a ship needs. My husband, Ioannis Martinos, loved the sea. Thanasis, from the first discussion, was an active part of this effort. I wasn’t the driving force, but I was the person who could make the difficult, easy. When you want something, you can do it.
I never did a directory.”I loved Thenamaris, not the manager. What I wanted was for my ships to increase and that happened”.
“The “Eleni” was the second ship, we had no money, Thanasis was finishing high school, I found money and we went to London for Thanasis to sign, who told me then, we will raise the Greek flag. The Harbor Master in London asked me: Do you know a typewriter? I told him, yes and I sat down and wrote the documents, Thanasis took them and that’s how we received the steamer.
We bought the first ship in 1964 for 80,000 pounds. It was a 20 year old ship. “Thanasis” was a Lebanese ship, it was for flying, we built it, we made it Cypriot and in 1967, we sold it to the Patera family who bought it for 300,000 dollars”.

Starting point for the creation of the Foundation, Athena I. Martinou’s passion for the sea and destination the offering to society, which is active around the sea and feels its daily presence in its veins. “She herself, as she characteristically says, is ‘like the sea, female”. Her whole attitude towards life is the same as towards the sea. Love and passion, respect and devotion. That’s why she accepts life with all its sides, whether calm and peaceful, or turbulent and stormy. Because Athena I. Martinou, like the sea, is never static. Bold and ambitious, hard-working and persistent, discreet and low-key, she is the Nunou of Greek shipping.
For every act, every move in the life of Athena I. Martinou, the sea was a source of inspiration. She was generous with her, as with those who love and respect her. She pursued her dream with a lot of work, dynamism and passion, and managed to win the respect and recognition of the shipping world with her merit.
Athena I. Martinou always returns to the sea to draw strength, and she wants to repay the generosity shown to her. Just as the waves of the sea travel us far, so too she, with the essential, but silent public benefit action of her Foundation, wants to make a decisive contribution to the implementation of projects for the benefit of Greek society, to help it go beyond its horizons, to travel, to it goes far.”
How the shipping empire was built
The Martin brothers’ father, Ioannis Martinos (1907-1977), owned one of the most famous antiques and art shops in Athens. His origin was from Stemnitsa in Gortynia. The shop was located in Monastiraki, in the heart of Athens. His wife, Athena, known in maritime and secular circles as Nunou, had roots in shipping as she came from the traditional shipping family of Methenitis. Her origin is from Kefalonia and Elefsina. They have four children.
The first investment in the sea by the Martinou family was made in the 60s under the guidance of Athena Martinou. Then with the profits from the gallery and artwork they bought the first ship. It was a truck named “Thanasis”, with a capacity of 10,000 tons. They bought it from the company of N. Livanos.
The first two ships were managed by the shipping company of the Methenitis family based in Piraeus and Kronos Shipping of D. Lemos based in the City of London.
However, in 1971, Athena Martinou decided to take over the management of the family’s ships. Together with her sons, Thanasis, Dino and Andreas, she founded the company Thenamaris Ships Management. Immediately afterwards he bought a third ship. The company’s growth was geometric in just four years. In 1975 Thenamaris controlled a fleet of 36 ships with a carrying capacity of 850,000 tons.
In the first years, Thanasis’ first-born son was at the helm next to Athena, while Dinos and Andreas gradually joined the business.
The three siblings stayed together until the early 90s.
At that time Thanasis Martinos left Thenamaris and founded Eastern Mediterranean, to be followed in 1997 by Andreas who founded Minerva.
The funeral of Athena (Nunou) Martinou will take place on Monday, October 14, at 1 p.m., at the Holy Church of Panagia Faneromeni Vouliagmeni.

Έφυγε από τη ζωή, το βράδυ της Παρασκευής, σε ηλικία 97 ετών, η Αθηνά (Νουνού) Μαρτίνου, η ισχυρότερη γυναίκα της ελληνικής ναυτιλίας και από τις πρωτοπόρες στη διεθνή θαλάσσια βιομηχανία. H Αθηνά (Νουνού) Μαρτίνου, μπήκε στη ναυτιλία το 1964. Το 1971, ίδρυσε τoν ναυτιλιακό κολοσσό Thenamaris. Ήταν γυναίκα με κοινωνικές ευαισθησίες που κρατούσε χαμηλούς τόνους και απέφευγε τη δημοσιότητα και την επίδειξη πλούτου.
Το 1971 πήρε την απόφαση να ασχοληθεί με τη διαχείριση των πλοίων της οικογένειάς της, γένους Μεθενίτη . Μαζί με τους γιους της, Θανάση, Ντίνο και Ανδρέα, ίδρυσε την εταιρεία Thenamaris Ships Management. Το 1975, ο στόλος αποτελούνταν από 36 πλοία.
Το 1991, η Αθηνά αποφασίζει να παραδώσει τα ηνία στα παιδιά της. Ο Θανάσης Μαρτίνος αποχωρεί από την εταιρεία, για να δημιουργήσει την Eastern Mediterranean Maritime.
Το 1997, ακολούθησε ο Ανδρέας τη δική του ρότα, και προχώρησε στην ίδρυση της ναυτιλιακής Minerva Marine, αφήνοντας στο τιμόνι της μητρικής εταιρείας Thenamaris τον Ντίνο. Στη Minerva πλέον έχει αναλάβει ο γιός του Ανδρέα, ο Ανδρεάς jounior και στη Thenamaris ο Νικόλας Μαρτίνος γιός του Ντίνου.
Σε μια συνέντευξή της για το πως ερωτεύτηκε τη θάλασσα, στην εκπομπή Αειναύτες η Αθηνά Μαρτίνου είχε αφηγηθεί: “ Είμαι Κεφαλονίτισσα, αλλά ρόλο για την αγάπη μου για τη θάλασσα έπαιξε ότι γεννήθηκα στη Γλυφάδα και έβλεπα τα πλοία να περνάνε και έλεγα στις φίλες μου: “και εμείς θα κάνουμε βαπόρια και το κάναμε. Είχαμε μανία με αυτό και το κάναμε και έκανε βαπόρια όλη η οικογένεια” και συνέχισε:
“Σε αυτή την προσπάθεια, δεν ήμουν μόνη μου. Κοντά μου ήταν από την πρώτη στιγμή ο άνδρας μου, αλλά κυρίως ήταν ο γιος μου Θανάσης, ο οποίος από δεκατεσσάρων ετών έκανε στατιστικές και έγραφε πόσο πλήρωμα, τι χρειάζεται ένα πλοίο. Ο άνδρας μου, ο Ιωάννης Μαρτίνος, αγαπούσε τη θάλασσα. Ο Θανάσης, από την πρώτη συζήτηση ήταν ενεργό μέρος σε αυτή την προσπάθεια. Δεν ήμουν η κινητήριος δύναμη, αλλά ήμουν ο άνθρωπος που μπορούσε να τα κάνει τα δύσκολα, εύκολα. Όταν θέλεις κάτι, μπορείς να το κάνεις.
Διευθυντιλίκι δεν έκανα ποτέ. “Τη Thenamaris αγαπούσα, όχι το διευθυντιλίκι. Αυτό που ήθελα ήταν να πληθαίνουν τα βαπόρια μου και αυτό έγινε”.
“Το “Ελένη”, ήταν το δεύτερο πλοίο, δεν είχαμε λεφτά, ο Θανάσης τελείωνε το Γυμνάσιο, βρήκα λεφτά και πήγαμε στο Λονδίνο για να υπογράψει ο Θανάσης, ο οποίος μου είπε τότε, θα υψώσουμε την ελληνική σημαία. Ο Λιμενάρχης στο Λονδίνο με ρώτησε: Ξέρεις γραφομηχανή; του είπα, ναι και κάθισα και έγραψα τα έγγραφα, τα πήρε ο Θανάσης και έτσι παραλάβαμε το βαπόρι.
Το πρώτο πλοίο το αγοράσαμε το 1964 με 80.000 λίρες. Ήταν ένα πλοίο 20 χρονών. Το “Θανάσης”,ήταν ένα πλοίο του Λιβανού, ήταν για πέταμα, το φτιάξαμε, το κάναμε κυπριακό και το 1967, το πουλήσαμε στην οικογένεια Πατέρα που το αγόρασαν με 300.000 δολάρια”.
Το Ίδρυμα Αθηνάς Ι. Μαρτίνου σκιαγραφεί την προσωπικότητα της Νουνού Μαρτίνου
Αφετηρία για τη δημιουργία του Ιδρύματος, το πάθος της Αθηνάς Ι. Μαρτίνου για τη θάλασσα και προορισμός η προσφορά στην κοινωνία, αυτή που δραστηριοποιείται γύρω από τη θάλασσα και νιώθει στις φλέβες της την καθημερινή της παρουσία. «Η ίδια, όπως χαρακτηριστικά λέει, είναι «σαν τη θάλασσα, γένους θηλυκού». Όλη η στάση της απέναντι στη ζωή, είναι όπως και απέναντι στη θάλασσα. Αγάπη και πάθος, σεβασμός και αφοσίωση. Για αυτό αποδέχεται τη ζωή με όλες τις πλευρές της, είτε ήρεμη και γαλήνια, είτε ταραγμένη και τρικυμιώδη. Γιατί η Αθηνά Ι. Μαρτίνου, σαν τη θάλασσα, δεν είναι ποτέ στατική. Τολμηρή και φιλόδοξη, εργατική και επίμονη, διακριτική και χαμηλών τόνων, είναι η Νουνού της ελληνικής ναυτιλίας.
Για κάθε πράξη, κάθε κίνηση στη ζωή της Αθηνάς Ι. Μαρτίνου, η θάλασσα αποτέλεσε πηγή έμπνευσης. Στάθηκε γενναιόδωρη μαζί της, όπως σε όσους την αγαπούν και τη σέβονται. Κυνήγησε με πολλή δουλειά, δυναμισμό και πάθος το όνειρό της, και κατάφερε να κερδίσει με την αξία της τον σεβασμό και την αναγνώριση του κόσμου της ναυτιλίας.
Η Αθηνά Ι. Μαρτίνου επιστρέφει πάντα στη θάλασσα για να αντλήσει δύναμη, και σε εκείνη θέλει να ανταποδώσει τη γενναιοδωρία που της έδειξε. Όπως τα κύματα της θάλασσας μας ταξιδεύουν μακριά, έτσι και εκείνη με την ουσιαστική, αλλά αθόρυβη κοινωφελή δράση του Ιδρύματός της, θέλει να συμβάλει καθοριστικά στην υλοποίηση έργων προς όφελος της ελληνικής κοινωνίας, να τη βοηθήσει να υπερβεί τους ορίζοντές της, να ταξιδέψει, να πάει μακριά».
Ο πατέρας των αδελφών Μαρτίνων, ο Ιωάννης Μαρτίνος (1907-1977), είχε ένα από τα πιο γνωστά καταστήματα με αντίκες και έργα τέχνης στην Αθήνα. Η καταγωγή του ήταν από τη Στεμνίτσα της Γορτυνίας. Το μαγαζί βρισκόταν στο Μοναστηράκι, στην καρδιά της Αθήνας. Η σύζυγός του, Αθηνά, γνωστή στους ναυτιλιακούς και κοσμικούς κύκλους ως Νουνού, είχε ρίζες στη ναυτιλία αφού προερχόταν από την παραδοσιακή ναυτιλιακή οικογένεια Μεθενίτη. Η καταγωγή της είναι από την Κεφαλονιά και την Ελευσίνα. Εχουν τέσσερα παιδιά.
Η πρώτη επένδυση στη θάλασσα από την οικογένεια Μαρτίνου έγινε τη δεκαετία του ’60 υπό την καθοδήγηση της Αθηνάς Μαρτίνου. Τότε με τα κέρδη από την γκαλερί και τα έργα τέχνης αγόρασαν το πρώτο πλοίο. Ηταν φορτηγό με το όνομα «Θανάσης», χωρητικότητας 10.000 τόνων. Το αγόρασαν από την εταιρεία του Ν. Λιβανού.
Τα δύο πρώτα πλοία τα διαχειριζόταν η ναυτιλιακή επιχείρηση της οικογένειας Μεθενίτη που είχε έδρα τον Πειραιά και η Kronos Shipping του Δ. Λεμού που είχε έδρα στο City του Λονδίνου.
Ωστόσο το 1971 η Αθηνά Μαρτίνου αποφάσισε να πάρει στα χέρια της τη διαχείριση των πλοίων της οικογένειας. Μαζί με τους γιους της, Θανάση, Ντίνο και Ανδρέα, ίδρυσε την εταιρεία Thenamaris Ships Management. Αμέσως μετά αγόρασε και τρίτο πλοίο. Η ανάπτυξη της εταιρείας ήταν γεωμετρική μέσα σε μόλις τέσσερα χρόνια. Το 1975 η Thenamaris ήλεγχε έναν στόλο από 36 πλοία, μεταφορικής ικανότητας 850.000 τόνων.
Στα πρώτα χρόνια, στο τιμόνι δίπλα στην Αθηνά ήταν ο πρωτότοκος γιος της Θανάσης, ενώ στην επιχείρηση μπήκαν σταδιακά ο Ντίνος και ο Ανδρέας.
Τα τρία αδέλφια έμειναν μαζί μέχρι τις αρχές της δεκαετίας του ’90.
Την εποχή εκείνη αποχώρησε από τη Thenamaris ο Θανάσης Μαρτίνος και ίδρυσε την Eastern Mediterranean, για να ακολουθήσει, το 1997, ο Ανδρέας που ίδρυσε τη Minerva.
Η κηδεία της Αθηνάς (Νουνού) Μαρτίνου θα πραγματοποιηθεί τη Δευτέρα 14 Οκτωβρίου, στη 1 το μεσημέρι, στον Ιερό Ναό Παναγίας Φανερωμένης Βουλιαγμένης.
Truly, this lady was and is an inspiration to all of us.
