I consider it impossible for Nikos Christodoulidis, with his diplomatic experience, to plan the ultimate… own goal against Turkey
Giorgos Harvalias is a journalist and political analyst, specialized in geostrategic issues. He was born in Athens and graduated from the Moraitis School. He completed his undergraduate studies at the Economics Department of the Law School of the University of Athens and continued for postgraduate studies at the University of Kent, Great Britain.

The talk about the accession of the Republic of Cyprus to NATO is not new . Not even the exclusive invention of the current President Nikos Christodoulidis.

During my visit to Megalonisos about six years ago, I had seen Nikos Anastasiadis at the Presidential Palace and had asked him directlyHe preferred to answer me “off the record, “analyzing, somewhat cynically, the critical parameters of the venture, and I will still respect confidentiality even today, although I can assure you that he was not at all averse to the idea. Under very specific conditions, however…

For my part, I would tell you that it is a matter of common sense. The choice has its pros and cons. It is not in itself a ” gift “, nor of course “extremely beneficial to establish the permanent and unwavering orientation of Cyprus “, as I read a few days ago in a major Athens newspaper which, when the time comes to refer to these matters, reminds Atlantic Council press release.

NATO, which in the recent past also bombed Serbia, is not exactly the… ” alliance of good”. Therefore, any planning for the entry of Cyprus into this military coalition must be related to the balances vis-à-vis Turkey. And by trying to exert additional pressure on the occupying power. Not with ideological orientations and the imaginary threat facing the island from the Russians. Let’s calm down now…

Therefore, in order for the Republic of Cyprus to apply for NATO membership, certain tangible exchanges must have been secured that will make the sign of the equation positive.

The international scene six years ago was indeed completely different. There was no Ukrainian crisis, the Cypriot government took care, albeit discreetly, to maintain a functional relationship with Moscow and the island was still a field of Russian economic activity, certainly not to the extent that this was done before the infamous “haircut” of the Cypriot banks in 2013. Moreover, NATO at that time was not at all fashionable. President Trump, in his first term, ostentatiously snubbed it, while even French President Macron called it… “brain dead.” Any talk of Cyprus applying for membership would immediately destroy the relationship with Russia, without being enthusiastically received anywhere else . And, of course, it would trip over Turkey’s veto, creating an unnecessary – for many – upheaval.

Today, however, things are completely different. Initially, the Ukrainian crisis brought the situation upside down. Nicosia’s relations with Moscow have essentially broken down beyond repair (though not blatantly and theatrically that Athens has chosen), and Cyprus has little to lose on that front.

In addition, NATO itself has suddenly become super hot for some Europeans who have discovered the Russian bogeyman, while much talk has been ignited about mammoth armament programs aimed at improving the defensive (as well as…offensive) armor of its members.

Recently, the Middle East crisis also broke out. In which NATO is not directly involved, but the United States is, which is also the central pillar of the Atlantic Alliance.

If one takes into account the special strategic position of Cyprus, it is easy to conclude that it has become a de facto part of the equation. Suddenly, the value of its services in the geostrategic stock market has skyrocketed. And the Americans do not seem at all unmoved. They went so far as to call the Cypriot President a few days before the presidential elections, just to confirm his legitimacy.

Christodoulidis obviously saw a window of opportunity. He understood that since he gave everything, he must also get something. Thus, the conversation about NATO came back to the table , even though it started with the wrong people. When I read that he first confided his “idea” to… Victoria Nuland and later to Jake Sullivan, I shuddered. But, even if this happened, did he have to confess it to a Greek newspaper? Does he not realize these persons are a “red flag” for the new American administration?

Furthermore, the President is saying things a little confusingly. Personally, I did not understand the “use” that Cyprus will be able to submit the membership application “when everything is in place”. An “exclusive” report by the correspondent of “Kathimerini” in Washington undertook to interpret him, illuminating what is hidden in the mind of the President of Cyprus in a way rather… frightening for those with a Greek national conscience. According to the journalist’s interpretation, Christodoulidis is planning a long negotiation process, with parallel gestures of goodwill towards Turkey for its European path and steps forward in the Cyprus issue. “Through them,” he concludes , “the cooperation of Ankara with European organizations and bodies very useful for its industries could be unlocked.

I am very afraid that, if “Kathimerini” correctly interprets Christodoulides’ intentions, it is an extremely oxymoronic figure. And nationally dangerous. Let’s… that is, woo Turkey with additional payments to allow us to apply for NATO membership!

So it’s probably a mistake. I consider it impossible for Nikos Christodoulidis, with his diplomatic experience, to plan the ultimate own goal. Because simple logic dictates the completely opposite approach: for Cyprus to explain to the Americans that, if they want military facilities, they must join NATO, even if Turkey shouts. If, however, he continues to block Cypriot accession, the US may well lift the arms embargo and allow the Republic of Cyprus to rearm. So simple.

Let’s put aside long procedures with “interdependent stages”. The application for membership as a negotiating weapon aims to expose and distance Turkey from the European structures. Not to make it easier for it to enter the European armament programs.

The rest, about integration ” after the solution ” or “solution with NATO guarantees ” (which we saw how strong they proved to be in the past…), are out of the question. Why are they canceling by definition the paper of pressure towards Turkey, now that the USA is in a hurry to use the aircraft carrier “Cyprus” .

The Republic of Cyprus must apply to join NATO as a self-sufficient entity, just as it did in the EU, thanks to the late Tassos Papadopoulos. Any other talk nullifies the merits of the initiative and touches the realm of… service to Erdogan. We expect Mr. Christodoulidis to clarify his position, especially in view of the Trump administration taking office, which may prove willing to break some bones with Turkey…

Η Κύπρος στο ΝΑΤΟ, αλλά με τι προϋποθέσεις;

Atlantic Council.

Ο Χριστοδουλίδης είδε προφανώς παράθυρο ευκαιρίας. Και κατάλαβε ότι, αφού τα δίνει που τα δίνει όλα, κάτι πρέπει να πάρει και αυτός. Ετσι, ξαναμπήκε στο τραπέζι η κουβέντα για το ΝΑΤΟ, παρότι την ξεκίνησε με λάθος ανθρώπους. Οταν διάβασα ότι πρωτοεκμυστηρεύτηκε την «ιδέα του» στη… Βικτόρια Νούλαντ και αργότερα στον Τζέικ Σάλιβαν ανατρίχιασα. Μα, και να συνέβη αυτό, έπρεπε να το εξομολογηθεί σε ελληνική εφημερίδα; Δεν αντιλαμβάνεται ότι τα πρόσωπα αυτά αποτελούν «κόκκινο πανί» για τη νέα αμερικανική διοίκηση;

  1. Cyprus should not join NATO. NATO is an alliance of war and aggression. Cyprus will become a western satellite like Greece if it joins. NATO is the enemy of the Orthodox Church, hence the decision to destroy Russia.

    • He Theodoros … where do you get your information .. Cyprus is wholly owned by the U.S and Israeli led EU/Nato alliance ! It is fully recongnized as a “Nato Aircraft Carrier”, not a country for years ! Good to know ..that you acknowledge the U.S and Israeli led Nato alliance is an enemy of the Orthodox Church.. that a good start! I have another scoop for you … Turkey ..U.S ally and member of the U.S and Israel led Zionist Nato alliance , actually , invaded Cyprus and burned Greek Orthodox Churches and faithful years ago and took over 1/3rd the territory of the Nato Aircraft Carrier”, another 1/3rd of the Aircraft carrier” was taken over by Nato Britain , hence you now know why they are called the “Nato Aircraft Carrier” floating in the Mediterranean! So like Greece .. Cyprus new enemy will not be Turkey but Russia, Iran, China and anybody who is not under the Control of the Zionist leaders of America and Israel! However for the ruling parties of Cyprus ..there regimes will be completely protected from removal of office by the people , as long as the cooperate with Nato leaders America and Israel! like buy only American and Israeli oil and gas, all military purchases, all technology , all drug and medical goods etc etc …. and participate in some way in Economic , political , and Military warfare of Nato … against their enemies , not the people of Cyprus! The biggest International Crime Syndicate awaits Cyprus corrupt public officials …
