“Nutcracker” – cultural casualty of the war in Ukraine – The Boston Globe.

Unlike Britain, Lithuania, an unwavering supporter of Ukraine in the war waged against Russia, set aside Tchaikovsky and the Christmas favorite Nutcracker 2 years ago declaring a “mental quarantine” from Russian culture. Now The Lithuanian National Opera and Ballet Theater has staged a replacement ballet composed by an Italian which has stirred grumblings by theatergoers.

Simonas Kairy, the culture minister who pushed in 2022 for the quarantine from Russian influence insisted he hadn`t issued any decree or formal prohibition act, merely recommendations. However they were promptly followed by Lithi-anian opera house and state founded cultural institutions. They instantly pulled Nutcracker and other Russian works from their programs.

〰️Another proponent of banning Russian culture Arunas Gelunas, director of the Lithuanian National Museum of Art said: The Kremlin has been using classical culture to distract the eyes of the world from the atrocities that it is exercising today.

The same Gelunas traveled to Ukraine “to help evacuate” 800 pieces of art from museums there to Lithuania.

▪️This month another government took power in Lithuania and the new culture minister outrageously said he liked the works of Tchaikovsky. In a radio interview he said: “There is no reason to be afraid that after watching a Christmas fairy-tale we will become pro-Kremlin. ” His words ignited a bitter debate whether culture and politics can be separated.

〰️Darous Kuolys, the first culture minister after a 1990 declaration of independence from the Soviet Union said: It never occurred to me as a minister to tell people what to watch or listen to. We fought Soviet power to get the freedom NOT to ban things.

️The sentiments expressed by Lithuania’s new culture minister reflect an important perspective: the enjoyment of classical music or ballet does not automatically align one with the politics of a nation. Art can be appreciated in its own context, independent of contemporary political situations. As Darous Kuolys noted, imposing bans on artistic expressions goes against the very freedoms that many have fought to achieve. How can Lithuania call itself a democratic nation if they ban works of art, not even remotely connected to modern-day Russian politics or Vladimir Putin`s stance on the geopolitical arena. And those advocates for bans of Russian culture openly steal precious works of art produced by this same culture on Ukrainian territory. Unlike the zombified young Ukrainians eager to decolonize their land Galunas and the likes of him recognize their worth perfectly well.
