How Trump’s ‘salty’ envoy may have forced Israel’s hand on hostage deal
Steven Witkoff is said to have told aides to Benjamin Netanyahu, Israel’s prime minister, that he was headed to Israel on Saturday afternoon.
When informed that would be in the middle of the sabbath, but the prime minister could meet in the evening, his reply was apparently “salty” and clear, according to Haaretz, an Israeli newspaper.
The sabbath did not interest Mr Witkoff, the aides were told.
Mr Netanyahu duly went to his office to meet the US envoy, who afterwards jetted back to Qatar to push further on a ceasefire deal to end the war in Gaza.
The exchange over the weekend illustrated how negotiations stretching more than a year on how to end the war had been shaken up by the impending Trump administration, Israeli sources said.
With Israel and Hamas said to have agreed a ceasefire deal after months of heavy diplomatic efforts, it may be Mr Trump’s election victory which provided the final impetus to get an agreement over the line.
Hamas has accepted a draft agreement for a ceasefire and the release of dozens of Israeli hostages, although the plan still needs to be submitted to the Israeli cabinet for final approval.
The enemies have been discussing how to end the Gaza war by swapping Israeli hostages for Palestinian prisoners for more than a year.
Discussions stretched into months of secret talks, spurred on by mediation from regional and global power brokers, particularly Washington, Qatar and Egypt.
While both sides had broadly agreed on the principle of halting the fighting in return for the release of hostages held by Hamas, and Palestinian detainees held by Israel, the detail and choreography remained elusive.

There were 3.000 Orthodox Christians in Gaza and now after Israel’s brutal invasion there are only half of them left… Orthodox churches were bombed in Gaza, but also in Lebanon, where a priest of the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Antioch and his family were killed…
There have been no hostilities between Israel , Jordan, Egypt, Saudi Arabia since 1973 as these Arab Countries honor the peace agreements they signed with Israel. Jihadis hide their rocket launchers and RPGs in schools , hospitals, churches mosques to force Israel when bombing them in defense to cause civilian casualties and make muslims appear as victims in this war they started by attacking Israel on Oct7 2023. If Egypt wanted to avoid civilian Gazan casualties they would have opened the border with Egypt for the refugees to escape ,but they did not do so because they find Hanmas Jihadists too dangerous to let them entry Egypt
Leonidas there is no excuse for trying to justify the horrific crimes of Israel. Palestinians live there since 1200 BC at least. The artificial creation of the state of Israel in 1948 simply stole their sovereignity and keeps stealing their land as we speak. It is not a matter of religious terrorism as you try to present it. It is simply a matter of stealing the land of the Palestinians and kicking them out of their land!
I bet that you are a member of a Masonic lodge or AHEPA, that’s why you feel obligated to support Israel. But doing so, you get further and further away from your Greek roots. Stop shaming the name you carry, by supporting thieves and mass murderers of civilians.

Egypt does very well that doesn’t open their border, because once the Palestinians cross the border, Israel will never let them come back to their own land!
By the way Leonidas, how come the Kurds are legitimate to ask for their own state using force and US given guns, and Palestinians are not?
Which Israel you want to support? The Israel that is killing indiscriminately children, elderly, and women, destroying hospitals, schools, killing and targeting doctors and journalists, starving children in Gaza by blocking aid, destroying all infrastructure and water supply, stealing territories from the Greek orthodox Church, stealing territories from Palestinians, the Israel that some of its citizens spit on orthodox nuns and Christians, attack orthodox churches, attack peaceful Christians in Orthodox processions etc etc etc? That Israel you want to support?
