Colonel McGregor: We have evidence that Israel is trying to provoke a Greek-Turkish war

We reproduce the following article here because of the great importance of the issue it raises and not because we necessarily agree with what it specifically states.
Besides, the provocation of tension with Turkey can come not only from this side of the Aegean, but also if the opposite side is convinced that this side is preparing something. That is why we need states and governments that do not falter.
We have, however, referred extensively in our articles in the past to the role played by Israel (with its enormous influence from the far left to the far right, including the media and the Greek “deep state”) in the adventurous policies of the “triangular” so-called “alliances” and EastMed which, while they did not have the slightest possibility of success in terms of Greek national interests, could have and ultimately did have disastrous consequences for these interests.
In the situation that the country and Cyprus find themselves in and in the general unprecedented global instability and uncertainty, it is even more important to show caution so that we do not have any new catastrophe.

In an interview on Thursday, February 13, American Colonel and former government official (under Trump I) Douglas Macgregor mentioned the following in passing:
“…We have evidence that the Israelis are working closely with the Greeks, and the Greeks seem to be prepared for war with the Turks, and there are people who argue that it is an Israeli strategy to unleash the Greeks against the Turks so that the Turks will turn against them, so we have a recipe for disaster here. And I don’t think anyone is thinking carefully right now in Washington….”

Something like this seems like a godsend at first glance. But let’s consider a number of elements.
First, who is speaking. We glean from Wikipedia: “Douglas McGregor (born 1947) is a retired colonel in the United States Army, a former government official. McGregor, an officer in the Armored Branch, was a leading figure in an early tank battle in the Gulf War and a leading planner of the 1999 NATO bombing of Yugoslavia. After retiring from the military in 2004, McGregor became more politically active. In 2020, President Donald Trump nominated him to be U.S. ambassador to Germany, but the U.S. Senate blocked the nomination. On November 11, 2020, a Pentagon spokesman announced that McGregor had been hired as a senior advisor to the acting secretary of defense, a position he held for less than three months. Trump also appointed him to the board of governors of the U.S. Military Academy.
Therefore, the speaker is not just a coincidence – and in fact, he was appointed to political positions by the first Trump administration. When he says “a lot of evidence is coming to us,” it is reasonable to assume that he is not pulling it out of his stomach.
Secondly, there has been a scandalous over-effort (and over-success) by the Israeli mechanism for unprecedented influence in Greece, and indeed at every level – the government, the political, the business, the military, the journalistic, the opinion-formers. We are talking about a situation where the vast space to the right of center, as well as the Greek warlords, defenseists, geopoliticians, etc., have indulged in an unprecedented love affair with Israel and, with our attachment to it, they imagine the crushing and annihilation of Turkey by the almighty Israel, to the point where they say neither more nor less that Bibi Netanyahu will give us the City (well, let him first successfully take Gaza…). When we talk about “unprecedented” influence, it should be noted that Greece was already firmly tied to Israel’s chariot since 2009, with each government since then taking it even further. But in the last year and a half, overtime – and successes – of a completely different class and category have been observed. The overtime is inexplicable: why so much extra effort, when you already “have” the country, cross-party and locked with no way out? Amid the paranoia of this reality, the “plenty of evidence” mentioned by the American colonel and former Trump administration official provide another perspective.
Third, the “plenty of evidence” mentioned by the American military officer presupposes an architecture of provocations where, however, it will be Greece that will take some fatal initiative against Turkey. And the only thing that is certain is that the Maximos Palace (which is not the only center of power in the country…) has absolutely no desire to spontaneously start a heated incident, let alone a war, with its neighbor. However, the devil has many legs, and this hypothetical possibility would not be the first time that some people will take initiatives based on promises and guarantees that have been given to them, as well as on a distorted reading of reality: there are precedents. The dictator Dimitrios Ioannides, after all, was not a tax engineer in Peristeri.
If we are to take the words of the former American military and government official at face value, as I believe we should because he is neither a casual nor does he say them by chance, then it would be worth speculating as to what the outcome of the scenario he describes and for which he has “a lot of evidence” could look like.
The Greek government is sufficiently squeezed by the right-wing and nationalist wing of the political spectrum, with parties constantly increasing their percentages, at a time when the new American administration is giving the green light to nationalist formations and “turns” across Europe. The expansion of territorial waters to twelve nautical miles – yes, the one that is related to a Turkish casus belli – is, after all, a “non-negotiable and unilateral right of ours” that we will “utilize whenever we deem it appropriate”, but also a “pending issue” since territorial waters have already been expanded in the Ionian Sea, something that both the government and Nikos Dendias personally do not forget to remind us of. How foolish it would be to imagine the offer of a… rhetorical helping hand from Israel to the Greek government, in response to the latter’s ample support for the former – especially at a time when the Greek government is looking for “footholds” in the Trump administration wherever and however it can: “preach 12 miles, you idiot, now is the time, we will support you in every way and especially in the USA, besides, you also need a right-wing/nationalist/patriotic turn for reasons of political survival, fear nothing, we are here and we are omnipotent, a phone call from Tel Aviv to President Trump and everything is complete, besides, the era of pan-European patriotic turns has begun. Go ahead, we’ve got your back, now or never.”

Συνταγματάρχης ΜακΓκρέγκορ: Έχουμε στοιχεία ότι το Ισραήλ προσπαθεί να προκαλέσει ελληνοτουρκικό πόλεμο
Αναπαράγουμε εδώ το παρακάτω άρθρο λόγω της μεγάλης σημασίας του ζητήματος που θίγει και όχι γιατί κατ’ ανάγκην συμφωνούμε με όσα συγκεκριμένα αναφέρει.
Άλλωστε, η πρόκληση έντασης με την Τουρκία μπορεί να προέλθει όχι μόνο από την εδώ πλευρά του Αιγαίου, αλλά και αν πεισθεί η απέναντι ότι η εδώ ετοιμάζει κάτι. Γι’ αυτό και χρειαζόμαστε κράτη και κυβερνήσεις που να μην παραπαίουν.
Έχουμε πάντως αναφερθεί εκτεταμένα στα άρθρα μας στο παρελθόν στον ρόλο που έπαιξε το Ισραήλ (με την τεράστια επιρροή του από την άκρα αριστερά έως την άκρα δεξιά, περριλαμβανομένων των ΜΜΕ και του ελληνικού “βαθέος κράτους”) στις τυχοδιωκτικές πολιτικές των “τριγωνικών” δήθεν “συμμαχιών” και του EastMed που, ενώ δεν είχαν εξαρχής την παραμικρή πιθανότητα ευόδωσης, ως προς τα ελληνικά εθνικά συμφέροντα, θα μπορούσαν να έχουν και τελικά είχαν καταστροφικές συνέπειες για αυτά τα συμφέροντα.
Στην κατάσταση που βρίσκονται η χώρα και η Κύπρος και στην γενικότερη πρωτοφανή παγκόσμια αστάθεια και αβεβαιότητα, είναι ακόμα πιο σημαντική η επίδειξη προσοχής για να μην έχουμε καμμιά καινούρια καταστροφή.

Σε συνέντευξή του την Πέμπτη 13 Φεβρουαρίου, ο Αμερικανός συνταγματάρχης και πρώην κυβερνητικός αξιωματούχος (επί Τραμπ Α΄) Ντάγκλας ΜακΓκρέγκορ (Douglas Macgregor) ανέφερε εν παρόδω τα εξής:
“…Έχουμε αποδείξεις για το ότι οι Ισραηλινοί συνεργάζονται στενά με τους Έλληνες, και οι Έλληνες φαίνεται να είναι προετοιμασμένοι για πόλεμο με τους Τούρκους, και υπάρχουν άνθρωποι που υποστηρίζουν ότι είναι στρατηγική του Ισραήλ να εξαπολύσει τους Έλληνες εναντίον των Τούρκων ώστε οι Τούρκοι να στραφούν εναντίον τους, οπότε έχουμε έχουμε εδώ μια συνταγή για καταστροφή. Και δεν νομίζω ότι κανείς σκέφτεται προσεκτικά αυτή τη στιγμή στην Ουάσιγκτον….”

Κάτι τέτοιο μοιάζει εκ πρώτης όψεως θεοπάλαβο. Ας συνυπολογίσουμε όμως μια σειρά από στοιχεία.
Πρώτον, ποιος ομιλεί. Σταχυολογούμε από τη Wikipedia: «Ο Ντάγκλας ΜακΓκρέγκορ (γενν. 1947) είναι απόστρατος συνταγματάρχης του στρατού των Ηνωμένων Πολιτειών της Αμερικής, πρώην κυβερνητικός αξιωματούχος. Ο ΜακΓκρέγκορ, αξιωματικός του Κλάδου Τεθωρακισμένων, ήταν ηγετική μορφή σε μια πρώιμη μάχη αρμάτων μάχης στον Πόλεμο του Κόλπου και κορυφαίος σχεδιαστής του βομβαρδισμού της Γιουγκοσλαβίας από το ΝΑΤΟ το 1999. Μετά την απόσυρσή του από τον στρατό το 2004, ο ΜακΓκρέγκορ κατέστη πιο ενεργός πολιτικά. Το 2020, ο πρόεδρος Ντόναλντ Τραμπ τον πρότεινε ως πρεσβευτή των ΗΠΑ στη Γερμανία, αλλά η αμερικανική Γερουσία μπλόκαρε τον διορισμό. Στις 11 Νοεμβρίου του 2020, εκπρόσωπος του Πενταγώνου ανακοίνωσε ότι ο ΜακΓκρέγκορ είχε προσληφθεί ως ανώτερος σύμβουλος του εκτελούντος χρέη υπουργού Άμυνας, μια θέση που κατείχε για λιγότερο από τρεις μήνες. Ο Τραμπ τον διόρισε επίσης στο διοικητικό συμβούλιο της Στρατιωτικής Ακαδημίας των ΗΠΑ».
Συνεπώς, ο ομιλητής μόνο τυχαίος δεν είναι -και μάλιστα, διορισμένος σε πολιτικές θέσεις από την πρώτη κυβέρνηση Τραμπ. Όταν αναφέρει «έρχονται σε εμάς πολλές αποδείξεις», είναι εύλογο να εικάσουμε ότι δεν τα βγάζει από την κοιλιά του.
Δεύτερον, παρατηρείται σε σκανδαλώδη βαθμό εσχάτως μια υπερπροσπάθεια (και υπερεπιτυχία) του μηχανισμού του Ισραήλ για πρωτοφανή επιρροή στην Ελλάδα, και μάλιστα σε κάθε επίπεδό της -το κυβερνητικό, το πολιτικό, το επιχειρηματικό, το στρατιωτικό, το δημοσιογραφικό, το επίπεδο των διαμορφωτών γνώμης. Μιλάμε για μια κατάσταση όπου ο αχανής χώρος δεξιότερα του κέντρου, καθώς και οι Έλληνες πολεμικάριοι, αμυντικάριοι, γεωπολιτικάριοι κλπ. έχουν επιδοθεί σε πρωτόφαντο έρωτα με το Ισραήλ και με την πρόσδεσή μας σε αυτό, φαντασιώνονται συντριβή και εκμηδένιση της Τουρκίας από το παντοδύναμο Ισραήλ, σε σημείο που να λένε ούτε λίγο ούτε πολύ ότι ο Μπίμπι ο Νετανιάχου θα μας δώσει την Πόλη (καλά, ας πάρει πρώτα επιτυχώς τη Γάζα…). Όταν μιλάμε για «πρωτοφανή» επιρροή, σημειωτέον ότι η Ελλάδα ήταν ήδη δεμένη γερά στο άρμα του Ισραήλ από το 2009, με κάθε κυβέρνηση έκτοτε να το προχωράει ακόμη παραπέρα. Αλλά τον τελευταίο ενάμιση χρόνο διαπιστώνονται υπερωρίες -και επιτυχίες- εντελώς άλλης κλάσης και κατηγορίας. Είναι δυσεξήγητες οι υπερωρίες: γιατί τόση υπερπροσπάθεια, όταν τη χώρα «την έχεις» ήδη, διακομματικά και κλειδωμένα χωρίς επιστροφή; Μέσα στην παράνοια αυτής της πραγματικότητας, οι «πολλές αποδείξεις» που αναφέρει ο Αμερικανός συνταγματάρχης και πρώην κυβερνητικός αξιωματούχος του Τραμπ δίνουν μια άλλη προοπτική.
Τρίτον, οι «πολλές αποδείξεις» που αναφέρει ο Αμερικανός στρατιωτικός προϋποθέτουν ένα αρχιτεκτόνημα προβοκατσιών όπου, όμως, θα είναι η Ελλάδα που θα αναλάβει κάποια μοιραία πρωτοβουλία έναντι της Τουρκίας. Και το μόνο βέβαιο είναι ότι το Μέγαρο Μαξίμου (που δεν αποτελεί το μοναδικό κέντρο εξουσίας στη χώρα…) δεν έχει απολύτως καμία όρεξη να ξεκινήσει αυτοβούλως ένα θερμό επεισόδιο, πόσω δε μάλλον έναν πόλεμο, με τη γείτονα. Ο διάολος όμως έχει πολλά ποδάρια, και το υποθετικό αυτό ενδεχόμενο δεν θα είναι η πρώτη φορά που κάποιοι θα αναλάβουν πρωτοβουλίες βασισμένοι σε υποσχέσεις και εγγυήσεις που τους έχουν δοθεί, καθώς και σε μια στρεβλή ανάγνωση της πραγματικότητας: υπάρχουν προηγούμενα. Ο δικτάτωρ Δημήτριος Ιωαννίδης, άλλωστε, δεν ήταν φοροτεχνικός στο Περιστέρι.
Αν είναι να πάρουμε τα λόγια του Αμερικανού πρώην στρατιωτικού και κυβερνητικού αξιωματούχου τοις μετρητοίς, όπως φρονώ πως θα οφείλαμε διότι ούτε τυχαίος είναι, ούτε τυχαία τα λέει, τότε θα άξιζε να σπεκουλάρουμε ως προς το με τι θα μπορούσε να μοιάζει η έκβαση του σεναρίου που περιγράφει και για το οποίο έχει «πολλές αποδείξεις».
Η ελληνική κυβέρνηση βρίσκεται αρκούντως στριμωγμένη από τη δεξιά και εθνικιστική πτέρυγα του πολιτικού φάσματος, με κόμματα να αυγαταίνουν συνεχώς στα ποσοστά τους, σε μια εποχή που η νέα αμερικανική κυβέρνηση δίνει το πράσινο φως σε εθνικιστικά μορφώματα και «στροφές» πανευρωπαϊκά. Η επέκταση των χωρικών υδάτων στα δώδεκα ναυτικά μίλια -ναι, αυτή που συναρτάται με τουρκικό casus belli- αποτελεί άλλωστε ένα «αδιαπραγμάτευτο και μονομερές δικαίωμά μας» που θα το «αξιοποιήσουμε όποτε το κρίνουμε σκόπιμο», αλλά και μια «εκκρεμότητα» αφού ήδη επεκτάθηκαν τα χωρικά ύδατα στο Ιόνιο, κάτι που δεν ξεχνά να υπενθυμίζει τόσο η κυβέρνηση όσο και ο Νίκος Δένδιας προσωπικά. Πόσο θεοπάλαβο θα ήταν άραγε να φανταστούμε την προσφορά μιας… ρητορικής χείρας βοηθείας από το Ισραήλ στην ελληνική κυβέρνηση, ως ανταπόκριση στην άπλετη στήριξη της δεύτερης στο πρώτο -πόσω δε μάλλον την ώρα που η ελληνική κυβέρνηση ψάχνει «πατήματα» στην κυβέρνηση Τραμπ όπου και όπως μπορεί: «κηρύξτε 12 μίλια βρε κουτά, τώρα είναι η ώρα, θα σας στηρίξουμε παντί τρόπω και κυρίως στις ΗΠΑ, άλλωστε χρειάζεστε και δεξιά/εθνικιστική/πατριωτική στροφή για λόγους πολιτικής επιβίωσης, μη φοβάστε τίποτα, εμείς είμαστε εδώ και είμαστε παντοδύναμοι, ένα τηλέφωνο από Τελ Αβίβ στον πρόεδρο Τραμπ και όλα κομπλέ, άλλωστε ξεκίνησε η εποχή των πανευρωπαϊκών πατριωτικών στροφών. Προχωράτε, we’ve got your back, τώρα ή ποτέ».
