By George N. Papathanasopoulos
The six-year-old ecclesiastical schism within the folds of Orthodoxy arose after the Ecumenical Patriarchate recognized the non-canonical clergy of Ukraine as the “autocephalous Ukrainian Orthodox Church.” This action isolated the Phanar from the majority of Orthodox Churches, which considered that the recognition of the non-canonical clergy of Ukraine had nothing to do with Orthodox Ecclesiology, but was made within the framework of geopolitical decisions of EU and NATO member countries towards Russia.
Specifically, of the nine Orthodox Patriarchates, seven have not recognized the state and uncanonical Church of Ukraine (Antioch, Jerusalem, Moscow, Serbia, Romania, Bulgaria, and Georgia). One has recognized it, except for the one of Constantinople. This is the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Alexandria. Also, of the five Orthodox Autocephalous Churches, three have not recognized it (Poland, Albania, Czech Republic – Slovakia) and the two Greek ones (Greece and Cyprus) have recognized it.
The schism is clear and has serious consequences for Orthodoxy. The Church of Moscow has severed canonical relations with that of Constantinople and with those who have recognized the uncanonical state Church of Ukraine. Due to the internal schism, inter-Christian dialogues have weakened, meetings of the Primates of the Orthodox Churches have ceased, the presence of Orthodoxy in the modern world has been critically wounded, and the prediction of the distinguished English historian and Byzantinologist Stephen Runciman that the 21st century would be the century of Orthodoxy has, to date, been tragically refuted.
The disappointing results of the Phanar policy for Orthodoxy have not yet convinced it to restore unity between all Orthodox Churches, restoring canonical order in Ukraine. It is absurd to hear slogans and wishes for the union of the Church of Constantinople with the Vatican, when Orthodoxy is divided, when curses and belligerent statements are hurled among brotherly Orthodox Christians, and when the persecutions of Orthodox Christians are favored and blessed because they are steadfast in their Faith and in the canonicality of the Church.
` This year, when Easter is celebrated on the same Sunday by Orthodoxy and other Christians and because of the 1700 years since the determination of the date in the First Ecumenical Council (325), it was planned between the seriously ill Pope Francis and the 85-year-old Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew to promote the permanent celebration of the common celebration of Easter. The agreement between the two occurred without the Phanar asking the other Orthodox Churches, as is required, whether they agree with its initiative.
The promotion of the joint celebration of Easter with Roman Catholics and Protestants on behalf of the Ecumenical Patriarchate is based on the fact that there are very few remaining Orthodox Christians in its seat and there will be no reactions. Moreover, very few political, spiritual, scientific, and economic leaders of the so-called “Christian peoples” will react to the violations of the Holy Canons. They are not interested in the issue. On the contrary, several leaders would very much like to associate their names with a historically important issue, such as the establishment of a joint celebration of Easter. However, most local Orthodox Churches – clergy and people – will react strongly and, again due to the Phanar, there will be a new schism in Orthodoxy, deeper and wider than the first. (Related: see Dr. Christos Papageorgiou, astronomer-theologian, “Athanasius the Great of Alexandria and the Christian Easter”, Reprinted from Volume: Proceedings of the 17th Theological Conference of the Holy See of Thessaloniki on the topic “Athanasius the Great”, Thessaloniki, 1997, p. 282).
The agreements between the Vatican and the Phanar are much easier for the Pope, who has infallibility, and are part of his long-standing policy of recognizing his secular hegemony by the Orthodox as well. This also applies to the calendar and the common feast of Easter, which began in 1582 (!), which was established by the then Pope Gregory XIII, hence its name “Gregorian”. The Catholic writer Georgios Sargologos writes in this regard: “Immediately, from then on (Note: from 1582) the complex but perfect mechanism of Vatican diplomacy was set in motion, so that the new calendar would be accepted by all Christian states. This acceptance would also have political consequences. By celebrating the greatest and most important feast of their religion together and unanimously – as the First Ecumenical Council established and in essence it was the only one it established – they would feel more united and secure, and the prestige – religious and secular – of the Roman Church would be strengthened. Rome kept this in mind throughout the negotiations which it carried out in all directions for the global acceptance of the calendar change” (George Sargologos “Progress at a heavy price – The Gregorian calendar and the stance of Orthodoxy – Calculation of the dates of Easter” Ed. “Kalo Typou”, 2nd Ed. Athens, 2007, pp. 14-15).
In the aforementioned context of the Pope’s ambition for the universal recognition of the Gregorian calendar and the common celebration of Easter, in 1582 the knight Livio Cellini was sent to Constantinople to negotiate with Patriarch Jeremiah II for the recognition of the new calendar by the Orthodox Church and the establishment of the common celebration of Easter on this basis. Jeremiah opposed the provisions of the Holy Bible and the decisions of the First Ecumenical Council of Nicaea. And while the negotiations were underway, the Patriarch was informed that the Pope had already issued the bull establishing the new calendar without waiting for his answer! The Patriarch, however, convened the Indwelling Synod on November 20, 1582, to discuss the Pope’s proposal, in which the Patriarchs of Alexandria Sylvester and Antioch Joachim and the Archbishop of Ohrid Gabriel also participated. This unanimously rejected the acceptance of the new calendar, as “impious, vain and harmful to the ecclesiastical tradition, founded on the Scripture, the Councils and the Fathers of the Church”. (Aut. pp. 18-19).
The Vatican continued and continues to seek “a point of unity” with Orthodoxy by promoting the common celebration of Easter, in violation of the mandate of the First Ecumenical Council. Issue 1-2 (January-April 2001) of the theological journal “Rivista Liturgica” (Liturgical Review), founded by the papal Benedictine monastic order in 1914, was dedicated to the common celebration of Easter with the Orthodox. The title of the issue was: “Pasqua: Quando una data commune?” (Easter: When is the common celebration?). Among the columnists, V. Peri, an official of the Vatican Library, emphasizes that “the common celebration of Easter, the fundamental celebration of the Church, which its founder wanted to be one, holy, catholic and apostolic, must proceed” (Note: The Roman Catholic columnist clearly combines the common celebration of Easter with the Church, of which the Pope is the head). In the same issue, Basilio Petra, a member of the editorial board of the magazine in question, notes: “Until the Orthodox Churches accept and agree with the Vatican’s proposal, it will be difficult to achieve a worldwide common celebration of Easter every year” (Author, p. 17).
In 2007, the celebration of Easter by the Orthodox and the Roman Catholics – Protestants and in a three-page tribute the “Christian and Catholic” French newspaper La Croix (The Cross) noted: “This year the “common” Easter offers the opportunity to promote ecumenical dialogue. Approaches are being made but divergences remain”. And regarding the differences between Roman Catholics and Orthodox, the newspaper notes: “To the theological disagreements are added obstacles connected with internal divisions of Orthodoxy and with the rebirth in Eastern Europe of the Catholic Churches, which maintain the forms of the Orthodox (the so-called Uniates). The problem of the Uniates of Ukraine is always an obstacle to rapprochement” (“La Croix”, 8-9 April 2007, pp. 9-11).
Recently, on April 22, 2023, in the French newspaper “Le Figaro” and on page 17, the Greek Orthodox Metropolitan of France Demetrios (Ploumis) and the Roman Catholic Bishop of Nanterre Mathieu Rouget jointly signed an article. In it, in view of the coincidence of the 2025 common celebration of Easter, they wrote: “A dialogue on the common celebration of Easter took place in 2017 in Aleppo (Note: Syria) under the auspices of the World Council of Churches (Note: Orthodox Churches and Protestant denominations participate in it, while Roman Catholics are observers). It was then proposed that all Christians return to the principles of the Council of Nicaea, that is, that Easter be celebrated on the Sunday following the first full moon after the vernal equinox, based on the meridian passing through Jerusalem. The proposal would achieve a date for the celebration of Easter that would be neither that of Catholics nor Protestants, nor of the Orthodox… Such a decision would certainly cause confusion among Christians who already have their calendar planned, but it would constitute an exceptional point of unity, truly beneficial for the peace of the whole world.”
For the proposal of the two clerics, the om. Professor of the Department of Mathematics of the National University of Athens and who worked for a decade as an astronomer at the Eugenides Foundation, Ms. Maro Papathanasiou, told us that the meridian of determination, whether it will be the first, that of Greenwich, or that of Jerusalem, has no relation to the determination of Easter. Therefore, the proposal of the two clerics does not mention anything essential about it. However, the two clerics imply that for the determination of Easter, the Gregorian calendar will be followed and therefore Orthodox Christians will be called upon to change the way of calculating Easter. (Note: For this topic, I refer to my article sent on April 29, 2023, entitled “The intentions of the Phanar and the Vatican on two serious issues”).-
*Part 2 will follow, God willing, in which there will be a reference to the Orthodox’s response to the new calendar and the joint celebration of Easter.

I hope all the bishops wake up and speak soon. Time is running out. Barto does not represent the entire OC. The Constantinople Church is no more. We now have a Istanbulian Church that is pale imitation with a leader that is more of a dictator than a father to the rest of us.
Nick,
I think that all those that didn’t believe you about the 20 million dollar bribe are about to find out that as always, your reports were not only honest to the best of your knowledge, but also correct:
https://spzh.eu/en/news/85373-former-cia-officer-us-paid-phanar-20-million-for-the-creation-of-oc
Lord have mercy!
Please read the admission from John Kiriakou hinself (the former CIA officer being interviewed) that the story about the $20 million is false:
https://johnkiriakou.substack.com/p/ukraine-and-the-greek-orthodox-patriarchate?r=1lpqyn&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=web&triedRedirect=true
It’s over 6 and a half years since the story of Bartholomew’s bribery was initiated. In all those years we never heard ANYTHING about Hillary’s involvement. Suddenly we have John Kiriakou mentioning Hillary almost in passing – with no corroborating evidence- and retracting immediately. Why? No apparent reason but to create confusion and salvage Bartholomew as he was descending to the hellhole he created for himself. No chance he can be saved. He is finished.
With or without the money, he is still wrong for going on another patriarch’s territory and have his minions steal churches, beat up the faithful, etc.
The money would just answer the “WHY?”. But given that is the same number, “20” that you have been speaking about, it’s certainly questionable why this guy would make such statements and them retract. He may have done it under enormous pressure. Nevertheless, we know US was involved over there and money did come into play.
