Just a look at our main map showing the areas where Chevron is now allowed to explore for oil in the South of Crete and a comparison with the delineation of the (totally illegal) Turkish-Libya memorandum below prove the positive “Trump effect” in the Eastern Mediterranean, which is very beneficial to Greek interests. The Turkey – Libya memorandum is now de facto cancelled. President Trump’s focus on peace and business and his rational and friendly attitude towards Greece, along with Israel’s need to gain “strategic depth” with the alliance with Greece and Cyprus, have already put Greek interests in a better place. Mitsotakis had many shady deals with Erdogan, following his family’s treasonous past and traditions. He is now forced to change course. Here are the two maps side by side.

The Government accepted the interest expressed by Chevron in order to proceed with hydrocarbon exploration in plots south of Crete.
The Ministry’s leadership will immediately proceed with the issuance of a relevant decision accepting the interest, as well as decisions that will specify the exact coordinates of the area, the type of contract and the announcement of an international tender.
The Minister of Environment and Energy, Mr. Stavros Papastavrou, made the following statement: “Today we have an important and pleasant development. The Ministry of Environment and Energy accepts the interest expressed by Chevron for the offshore plots south of Crete I and II.
Chevron, the world’s 2nd largest private American company active in the hydrocarbon sector, is showing continuous and increasing interest in exploration in our Homeland. This fact is a vote of confidence in Greece. It proves that our country continues to be an attractive investment destination, with a reliable Government that guarantees stability.
At the same time, it is a strong indication of the existence of significant natural energy resources, critical for our country, the Eastern Mediterranean and Europe. Resources that will be exploited for the benefit of all Greeks. The relevant Ministerial Decisions will follow, for the exact coordinates and the announcement of an international tender. The Government of Kyriakos Mitsotakis is consistently implementing its commitments for a Greece that is energy-secure, investment-attractive and geostrategically strong.
The Ministry’s announcement
“The Ministry of Environment and Energy announces another important development that strengthens the country’s efforts to exploit its national energy resources and competitive advantages, for the benefit of all citizens.
Chevron, the world’s 2nd largest private American energy company operating in the hydrocarbon sector, has expressed its interest in exploring two more offshore blocks extending to the South of Crete and located within the boundaries of the areas, as published by the Greek Government with the announcement of the relevant international tender in 2014.
The Ministry of Environment and Energy accepts Chevron’s expression of interest for the South Crete I and South Crete II areas. The Ministry’s leadership will immediately proceed to issue a relevant decision accepting the interest, as well as decisions that will determine the exact coordinates of the area, the type of contract and the announcement of an international tender. It is noted that the new areas of interest already have an approved Strategic Environmental Impact Study. The development follows a similar interest that the company recently expressed – and reconfirmed today – for the maritime area South of the Peloponnese, which had been accepted by the former Minister of Environment and Energy, Mr. Theodoros Skylakakis.
This development changes the data, as Greece will now enter the international markets with four new areas for concession. These are the areas “Block A2”, “South of the Peloponnese”, “South of Crete 1” and “South of Crete 2”, with a total area of 47 thousand square kilometers, which essentially doubles the area of active marine areas for exploration. The increase in plots available for exploration enhances and multiplies the chances of identifying commercially exploitable deposits. The contribution of the Hellenic Hydrocarbon and Energy Resources Management Company and its CEO, Mr. Aristophanes Stefatos, was decisive.
It is noted that Chevron, an international oil giant based in the USA, has a wide presence in the eastern Mediterranean, with exploration activities in Egypt, Israel and Cyprus. The new areas in which it is interested in conducting exploration are adjacent to the concessions where ExxonMobil is already working intensively, highlighting the fact that the largest American oil companies are upgrading their interest and strategy – and, consequently, their investments – in the eastern Mediterranean.

ΗΚυβέρνηση αποδέχτηκε το ενδιαφέρον που είχε εκδηλώσει η Chevron προκειμένου να προχωρήσει σε έρευνες για υδρογονάνθρακες σε οικόπεδα Νότια της Κρήτης.
Η ηγεσία του Υπουργείου θα προχωρήσει άμεσα στην έκδοση σχετικής απόφασης αποδοχής του ενδιαφέροντος, καθώς και αποφάσεων που θα προσδιορίζουν τις ακριβείς συντεταγμένες της περιοχής, τον τύπο της σύμβασης και την προκήρυξη διεθνούς διαγωνισμού.
Ο Υπουργός Περιβάλλοντος και Ενέργειας, κ. Σταύρος Παπασταύρου, προέβη στην ακόλουθη δήλωση: «Σήμερα έχουμε μια σημαντική και ευχάριστη εξέλιξη. Το Υπουργείο Περιβάλλοντος και Ενέργειας αποδέχεται το ενδιαφέρον που εκδήλωσε η Chevron για τα θαλάσσια οικόπεδα Νότια της Κρήτης Ι και ΙΙ.
Η Chevron, 2η μεγαλύτερη παγκοσμίως ιδιωτική αμερικανική εταιρεία που δραστηριοποιείται στον κλάδο των υδρογονανθράκων, εκδηλώνει συνεχές και εντεινόμενο ενδιαφέρον για έρευνες στην Πατρίδα μας. Η ανακοίνωση του Υπουργείου
«Το Υπουργείο Περιβάλλοντος και Ενέργειας ανακοινώνει μια ακόμα σημαντική εξέλιξη που ενισχύει τις προσπάθειες της χώρας για αξιοποίηση των εθνικών της ενεργειακών πόρων και ανταγωνιστικών πλεονεκτημάτων, προς όφελος όλων των πολιτών.
Η Chevron, η 2η μεγαλύτερη παγκοσμίως ιδιωτική αμερικανική εταιρεία ενέργειας που δραστηριοποιείται στον κλάδο των υδρογονανθράκων, εκδήλωσε το ενδιαφέρον της για έρευνα σε δύο ακόμη θαλάσσια οικόπεδα που εκτείνονται στα Νότια της Κρήτης και βρίσκονται εντός των ορίων των περιοχών, όπως αυτές δημοσιεύτηκαν από την ελληνική Κυβέρνηση με την προκήρυξη του σχετικού διεθνούς διαγωνισμού το 2014.
Το Υπουργείο Περιβάλλοντος και Ενέργειας αποδέχεται την εκδήλωση ενδιαφέροντος της Chevron για τις περιοχές Νότια Κρήτη Ι και Νότια Κρήτη ΙΙ. Η ηγεσία του Υπουργείου θα προχωρήσει άμεσα στην έκδοση σχετικής απόφασης αποδοχής του ενδιαφέροντος, καθώς και αποφάσεων που θα προσδιορίζουν τις ακριβείς συντεταγμένες της περιοχής, τον τύπο της σύμβασης και την προκήρυξη διεθνούς διαγωνισμού. Σημειώνεται ότι οι νέες περιοχές ενδιαφέροντος διαθέτουν ήδη εγκεκριμένη Στρατηγική Μελέτη Περιβαλλοντικών Επιπτώσεων. Η εξέλιξη έρχεται σε συνέχεια αντίστοιχου ενδιαφέροντος που εκδήλωσε πρόσφατα -και επανεπιβεβαίωσε σήμερα- η εταιρεία για τη θαλάσσια περιοχή Νότια της Πελοποννήσου, το οποίο και είχε γίνει αποδεκτό από τον τ. Υπουργό Περιβάλλοντος και Ενέργειας, κ. Θόδωρο Σκυλακάκη.
Η εξέλιξη αυτή αλλάζει τα δεδομένα, καθώς πλέον η Ελλάδα θα βγει στις διεθνείς αγορές με τέσσερις νέες περιοχές προς παραχώρηση. Πρόκειται για τις περιοχές «Μπλοκ Α2», «Νότια της Πελοποννήσου», «Νότια της Κρήτης 1» και «Νότια της Κρήτης 2», συνολικής έκτασης 47 χιλιάδων τετραγωνικών χιλιομέτρων, που ουσιαστικά διπλασιάζουν την έκταση των ενεργών θαλάσσιων περιοχών προς έρευνα. Η αύξηση των διαθέσιμων προς εξερεύνηση οικοπέδων ενισχύει και πολλαπλασιάζει τις πιθανότητες εντοπισμού εμπορικά αξιοποιήσιμων κοιτασμάτων. Καθοριστική ήταν η συμβολή της Ελληνικής Διαχειριστικής Εταιρείας Υδρογονανθράκων και Ενεργειακών Πόρων και του Διευθύνοντος Συμβούλου της, κ. Αριστοφάνη Στεφάτου.
Επισημαίνεται ότι η Chevron, διεθνής πετρελαϊκός κολοσσός με έδρα τις ΗΠΑ, έχει ευρεία παρουσία στην ανατολική Μεσόγειο, με ερευνητικές δραστηριότητες σε Αίγυπτο, Ισραήλ και Κύπρο. Οι νέες περιοχές στις οποίες ενδιαφέρεται να διενεργήσει έρευνες γειτνιάζουν με τις παραχωρήσεις όπου εργάζεται ήδη με εντατικούς ρυθμούς η ExxonMobil, αναδεικνύοντας το γεγονός ότι οι μεγαλύτερες αμερικανικές πετρελαϊκές εταιρείες αναβαθμίζουν το ενδιαφέρον και τη στρατηγική τους -και, συνακόλουθα, τις επενδύσεις τους- στην ανατολική Μεσόγειο.
