EDITOR’S NOTE (Nick Stamatakis). We just learned that Netanyahu left the White House without a joint press conference wth President Trump – which signals a “problem” in their discussion… It probably has to do with Trump’s insistence on peace negotiations on all issues: first, in solving the problem with Turkey in Syria and then in dealing with Iran.  This Saturday, there will be direct talks between the US and Iran. I remind you that Russia has paved the way by signing a treaty with Iran this January where Iran agrees not to acquire a nuclear weapon.  Trump seems to have refused Netanyahu’s pressure to bomb Iran…

Trump spoke highly of Erdogan in front of Netanyahu, and this must have agitated Bibi. However, this should not “scare” us: Remember the story of pastor Andrew Branson and how fast Erdogan freed him? In a couple of days after Trump’s threats, the Turkish economy was about to collapse. 

Trump knows that the main reason Americans supported him was his promise to avoid wars at all costs.

Donald Trump praised Tayyip Erdogan in his joint statements with Benjamin Netanyahu, saying that “we have a great relationship. I like him a lot. He’s very smart.” He also noted that “I have a very good relationship with this man Erdogan: I like him, he likes me, and that drives the media crazy.”

He also stressed that he can mediate between Israel and Turkey, which seem ready to clash for influence in Syria. He also congratulated Erdogan for doing “what no one has done in 2,000 years, occupying Syria,” referring to the successful overthrow of the Assad regime by Islamists.
“Any problem you have with Turkey, I think we can solve it, as long as you are reasonable, you have to be reasonable,” he told Netanyahu.

Donald Trump appeared yesterday, Monday, convinced that he can solve the “problem” between Israel and Turkey regarding Syria, touting the good relationship he says he has with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who, at least as the US president sees it, has de facto “taken control” of the country.
“I have a good relationship with a man named Erdogan. Have you heard about him? He finds that I like him and he likes me,” Mr. Trump told the press in the Oval Office, during his meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
“I told the (Israeli) prime minister: ‘If you have a problem with Turkey, I really think I can solve it,’” he added.
Mr. Netanyahu had earlier said he did not want “Syria to be used by anyone, including Turkey, as a base for an attack on Israel.”
“We discussed how we can avoid conflict in various ways, and I think we could not have a better interlocutor than the president of the United States for that purpose,” he added.
Turkey’s influence in Syria worries Israel, whose military has launched a series of airstrikes and ground operations on Syrian territory. The UN has condemned the attacks, accusing Israel of seeking to “destabilize” Syria.
US President Trump then launched into a monologue, claiming, in a tone that suggested he was amused, that Turkey had now de facto taken “control” of Syria.
“I told him (Mr Erdogan’s editor): ‘Congratulations, you’ve done something that no one has done in 2,000 years. You’ve taken control of Syria,’” Mr Trump said.
Ankara is among the main supporters of the new Syrian authorities under interim President Ahmed al-Sarrah, whose Islamist alliance toppled Bashar al-Assad in December, seizing power after 14 years of civil war.
Mr Trump added, however, that the Turkish leader protested when he heard the comment: “He said ‘no, no, no… It wasn’t me.’”
“He’s a tough guy. He’s very smart and he’s accomplished something that no one else has been able to accomplish,” the Republican insisted.

The Prime Minister’s Office confirms this to the Times of Israel.
The press conference was to take place after their meeting. Joint statements are still expected in the Oval Office.
The White House did not give any immediate explanation for why the press conference was canceled.
It is noted that the US president welcomed the Israeli prime minister with a warm handshake.

Netanyahu expected to return to Israel on Wednesday

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will meet with US special envoy Steve Witkoff and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick in Washington this week, senior Israeli officials told the Times of Israel’s Jewish website, Zman Yisrael.
Netanyahu is expected to return to Israel on Wednesday and then head straight to testify in his ongoing corruption trial.
“We have no idea what [US President Donald] Trump wants to tell us and why it was so urgent and important to him,” the senior official said. “We wanted to meet next week,” he added.
Trump and Netanyahu will make joint statements to the press tomorrow, Monday, according to Israel’s Channel 12.

Τόνισε δε ότι μπορεί να μεσολαβήσει μεταξύ του Ισραήλ και της Τουρκίας, οι οποίες φαίνεται ότι είναι έτοιμες να συγκρουστούν για την επιρροή στη Συρία.
Επίσης, συνεχάρη τον Ερντογάν που έκανε «αυτό που κανείς δεν έχει κάνει εδώ και 2.000 χρόνια, την κατάληψη της Συρίας», αναφερόμενος στην επιτυχή ανατροπή του καθεστώτος Άσαντ από ισλαμιστές.

«Συζητήσαμε το πώς μπορούμε να αποφύγουμε σύγκρουση με διάφορους τρόπους, και νομίζω πως δε θα μπορούσαμε να έχουμε καλύτερο συνομιλητή από τον πρόεδρο των ΗΠΑ για τον σκοπό αυτό», πρόσθεσε.
Η επιρροή της Τουρκίας στη Συρία ανησυχεί το Ισραήλ, ο στρατός του οποίου έχει εξαπολύσει σειρά αεροπορικών βομβαρδισμών και χερσαίων επιχειρήσεων στη συριακή επικράτεια. Ο ΟΗΕ καταδίκασε τις επιθέσεις αυτές, κατηγορώντας το Ισραήλ πως επιδιώκει την «αποσταθεροποίηση» της Συρίας.
Ο αμερικανός πρόεδρος Τραμπ κατόπιν επιδόθηκε σε μονόλογο, υποστηρίζοντας, με τόνο που άφηνε να εννοηθεί πως τον διασκεδάζει, ότι η Τουρκία έχει πλέον πάρει de facto τον «έλεγχο» της Συρίας.

Η Άγκυρα συγκαταλέγεται στους βασικούς υποστηρικτές των νέων συριακών αρχών υπό τον προσωρινό πρόεδρο Άχμαντ αλ Σάρα, η ισλαμιστική συμμαχία του οποίου ανέτρεψε τον Μπασάρ αλ Άσαντ τον Δεκέμβριο, καταλαμβάνοντας την εξουσία έπειτα από 14 χρόνια εμφυλίου πολέμου.
Ο κ. Τραμπ συμπλήρωσε ωστόσο πως ο τούρκος ηγέτης διαμαρτυρήθηκε όταν άκουσε το σχόλιο αυτό: «Είπε ‘όχι, όχι, όχι… Δεν ήμουν εγώ’».
«Είναι σκληρός τύπος. Είναι πολύ έξυπνος και κατάφερε κάτι που δεν είχε μπορέσει να καταφέρει κανένας», επέμεινε ο Ρεπουμπλικάνος.

Ο Λευκός Οίκος ανακοίνωσε ότι η συνέντευξη Τύπου Τραμπ – Νετανιάχου ακυρώθηκεΤι ανέφερε ο Λευκός Οίκος
Η προγραμματισμένη συνέντευξη Τύπου με τον πρωθυπουργό Μπενιαμίν Νετανιάχου και τον πρόεδρο των ΗΠΑ Ντόναλντ Τραμπ ακυρώθηκε, σύμφωνα με αξιωματούχο του Λευκού Οίκου.
Το Γραφείο του Πρωθυπουργού το επιβεβαιώνει στους Times of Israel.
Η συνέντευξη Τύπου επρόκειτο να πραγματοποιηθεί μετά τη συνάντησή τους. Αναμένονται ακόμη κοινές δηλώσεις στο Οβάλ Γραφείο.
Ο Λευκός Οίκος δεν έδωσε καμία άμεση εξήγηση γιατί ακυρώθηκε η συνέντευξη Τύπου.

Ο πρωθυπουργός του Ισραήλ Μπενιαμίν Νετανιάχου θα συναντήσει τον ειδικό απεσταλμένο των ΗΠΑ Στιβ Γουίτκοφ και τον υπουργό Εμπορίου Χάουαρντ Λούτνικ στην Ουάσιγκτον αυτή την εβδομάδα, ανέφεραν ανώτεροι ισραηλινοί αξιωματούχοι στον εβραϊκό ιστότοπο των Times of Israel, Zman Yisrael.
Ο Νετανιάχου αναμένεται να επιστρέψει στο Ισραήλ την Τετάρτη και στη συνέχεια να κατευθυνθεί απευθείας για να καταθέσει στην εξελίξει δίκη του για διαφθορά.
«Δεν έχουμε ιδέα για τι θέλει να μας πει ο [ο Πρόεδρος των ΗΠΑ Ντόναλντ] Τραμπ και γιατί ήταν τόσο επείγον και σημαντικό για αυτόν», δήλωσε ο ανώτερος αξιωματούχος. «Θέλαμε να συναντηθούμε την επόμενη εβδομάδα», πρόσθεσε.
