By Nick Stamatakis
For many days, I have been trying to find the right answers to the above subject. Why? Because we are coming at “a fork in the road”… In the next two months, Pat. Bartholomew will be visiting Mt. Athos with a single purpose in his heretic mind: To demand “obedience”, so that his plans for “Union” with the Catholics and his other “pan-religion” philosophies proceed. Everyone knows that any such plans will be impossible as long as Athos stands tall as a defender of the Faith. Then, in September, he will visit the United States to receive one more undeserved award and to push similar issues. Again, he will demand “obedience” to the head of the Church. What is obedience?
Obedience is one of the basic principles of Orthodox spirituality, particularly monasticism, and Christian life in general. However, obedience is not blind. It is always “in Christ,” i.e., it can never be contrary to God’s will, truth, or the individual’s freedom.
There is no better example of obedience and disobedience than the one offered by the AB of Albania, Anastasios, of blessed memory. In 1991, the then newly-elected Pat. Bartholomew asked him to go to Albania (at the time, he was serving the Mission in Africa), and he duly showed “obedience to the will of the Church”, as he said. “I will be going to the Africa of Europe”, he noted. In parentheses, I am not convinced that Pat. Bartholomew did not have hidden motives: If Anastasios were ever elected at any Metropolis of Greece, he would overshadow Bartholomew so much that he would make him look even less worthy than he truly is. If you have any doubts about my thoughts, consider how Bartholomew declared war against the most beloved Archbishop Greece ever had, AB Christodoulos. Or consider how Met. Nikolaos of Mesogaias overshadows everyone in World Orthodoxy today with his charisma. However, in recent years, when Batholomew followed his abysmally fallacious path in granting the Ukrainian autocephaly, Anastasios wrote two letters that will forever remain in Orthodox history as bright examples of disobedience. Faced with the documented disobedience (and the theological/political defeat) reflected in Anastasios’ letters, Batholomew asked his minions in the press – including some notable “theologians” in our community – to start “throwing mud” at him and they did in the most despicable way. Helleniscope and the overwhelming majority of Orthodox faithful and hierarchy’s globally supported him.
Limits and Exceptions to Obedience in Orthodoxy
Obedience has limits that collide with divine truth, Orthodox faith, or human dignity. Obedience is a path to salvation and never a goal in itself, and obedience must always be in the service of Christ‘s truth.
1. When obedience conflicts with God’s will
Biblical Reference: “We must follow God and not men.” — Acts 5:29 The Apostles did not obey when they were commanded not to preach in the name of Jesus. Obedience and trust in God, therefore, take precedence over any human-derived authority.
St. John Chrysostom: “If you are commanded to do something against God, it is not obedience but disobedience to do so.” (PG 63, 181) Therefore, whenever an order violates divine law, to obey is not to comply, but to sin.
2. If the superior (e.g., bishop, spiritual father) is a heretic.
Biblical Reference: “If anyone is preaching to you a gospel contrary to what you received, let him be accursed.” — Galatians 1:9 Despite the fact that an angel is preaching another gospel, he is anathema, so we do not engage in false doctrine.
St. Maximus the Confessor: “One must obey God and not the self–proclaimed leaders when they are contrary to the commandments of God.” (PG 90, 141C)St. Theodore the Studite (on obedience to heretics): “Even if an angel from heaven were to speak falsely, do not listen to him; much less if it is a man.” (PG 99, 1321) Obedience is not due when the order comes from heretical or schismatical authority, although such authorities bear high ecclesiastical rank.
3. When obedience entails spiritual, psychological, or physical abuse
St. Paisios of Mount Athos: “Obedience is not slavery. If the thing you are being taught is irrational, hurtful, or soul-destroying, speak out with discretion. It is not a sin to have a voice.” Obedience should never be used to excuse abuse of authority or manipulation. Healthy spiritual fatherhood is rooted in love and liberty, not in domination.
4. When blind obedience is required without discrimination
St. Isaac the Syrian “Never follow when your conscience loudly protests that this is irrational, illegal, or injurious.” Orthodox tradition does not admit blind obedience. Discernment (διάκρισις) is always demanded.
5. When spiritual fatherhood is authoritarian or deformed.
St. Symeon the New Theologian “The spiritual father is not the master of the soul, but a fellow-worker for its salvation. The spiritual father does not own or control the soul of the person under his charge. If he demands extreme restrictions, interferes in interpersonal relationships, or governs by threat, then obedience has been perverted.”
Finally, in Orthodoxy obedience is a spiritual exercise meant to heal the ego through humility, while discernment is necessary to protect the integrity of the Church. These two principles are not contradictory but complementary: obedience is personal and voluntary, whereas discernment—such as when saying “Axios” or “Anaxios”—is a communal responsibility based on observable virtue. True obedience always requires discernment; blind submission can lead to error. Thus, spiritual maturity involves balancing humility with responsible judgment.

Εδώ και πολλές μέρες προσπαθώ να βρω τις σωστές απαντήσεις στο παραπάνω θέμα. Γιατί; Επειδή ερχόμαστε σε μια κρίσιμη καμπή… Στους επόμενους δύο μήνες ο Πατ. Βαρθολομαίος θα επισκεφθεί το Άγιο Όρος με έναν και μόνο σκοπό στο αιρετικό του μυαλό: Να απαιτήσει «υπακοή», ώστε να προχωρήσουν τα σχέδιά του για «Ένωση» με τους Καθολικούς και τις άλλες «πανθρησκειακές» φιλοσοφίες του. Όλοι γνωρίζουν ότι οποιαδήποτε τέτοια σχέδια θα είναι αδύνατα όσο ο Άθως στέκεται ψηλά ως υπερασπιστής της Πίστεως. Στη συνέχεια, τον Σεπτέμβριο, θα επισκεφθεί τις Ηνωμένες Πολιτείες για να λάβει ένα ακόμη άδικο βραβείο και να προωθήσει παρόμοια θέματα. Και πάλι θα απαιτήσει «υπακοή» στον επικεφαλής της Εκκλησίας. Τι είναι η υπακοή;

I was not born to be slave of prisoner to a mangy self-important yutz. I answer to my Father.
The solution is NOT to turn into a Protestant, as you are suggesting with this second clause of your response. The issue is about demanding accountability and authenticity from the clergy, and especially the hierarchy (who must read a pledge of adherence to the Canons of the Church when they are ordained), to remain faithful to the dogmas and Canons of the Orthodox Faith. The laity historically have the Canonical permission to say “anaxios”, and to demand authenticity and tradition over “progressiveness / innovation” and “corruption / heresy”.
The laity also have a Canonical right to participate in the election of bishops, and that is the root of the problem today…the Synods have quietly and improperly excluded the laity from that process in the last couple hundred years, largely resulting in the unacceptable situation that we are experiencing where “the corrupt” routinely and successfully “promote their own”. And if you think this is an exaggeration, look at what routinely happens in Greece, and Cyprus, where the people petition for one replacement candidate when a Metropolitan dies or retires, but the Synod “decides” otherwise…Do you think it was an accident that the former Archbishop of Cyprus prioritized the expansion of the Synod by a few more seats early in his tenure, then “planted” his “disciples” in those seats, so that lo and behold, his “pre-selected successor” (some stupid tradition about the Metropolitan of Paphos being “next in line”) would be guaranteed the votes in the Synod? Restoring the laity’s original historic involvement in a meaningful determination of “axios” vs. “anaxios” will normalize the situation, but there would have to be a lot of “deposing” and “beard-shaving” that would need to occur first, in order to remove the “cancer of corruption, irreverence, anti-traditionalism, and faithlessness” that has grown within…
I will treasure this article always. The author spoke to my heart. Let me begin by stating I have stepped back from attending church the last few years because I have realized that the worldly affairs of governments are led by confused and corrupted men and women. To follow their mandates is toxic to my soul. How do we fight evil in a world of lies and confusion? The interference of government in church affairs is detrimental to Orthodox Christians around the world.
Is Patriarch Bartholomew and exemplar of faith and obedience to the word of Jesus Christ? The Patriarch has entwined himself with the State Department which is not in keeping with Scripture.
The establishment of the White House Faith Office by Executive Order was on February 7, 2025. On May 15, 2025 President Trump established the Religious Liberty Commission of which the Patriarch is a member. Does the Patriarch really have the time to engage in this commission we know nothing about?
The Pochaev Monastery sent a letter to the Patriarch July 15, 2021: The Cause of the Division of the One People of God. https://orthochristian.com/140930.html
The letter stated, “ We are at a loss to fathom what motivated your decisions, but we see firsthand what they have led to. With sorrow and confusion in our hearts, we, the monastics of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, ask you, Patriarch Bartholomew, how can your morality accept the level of agitation that your decision has brought to our country: church seizures, simple believers being beaten, discrimination against our pastors and flocks on a state level, and calls for the execution of our clergy? Do you understand that in the decline of your life, you have become the cause of the division of the one people of God, in which, according to the Apostle Paul, there is neither Greek nor Jew, circumcision nor uncircumcision, Barbarian, Scythian, bond nor free: but Christ is all, and in all (Col. 3:11)? What anti-Church powers were you serving when you committed such an unprecedented crime against the Church? Do you realize that in the bloody confrontation that sows grief among our people, you have brought new seeds of religious struggle, from which the Lord saved us earlier?”
Was this letter ever answered by the Patriarch? If anyone knows, can you post it in the comment section here? The Patriarch has accepted his membership in the US Religious Liberty Commission. Hypocrisy abounds! How many people whether Ukrainian or Russian have died because Patriarch Bartholomew’s intentional decision to go ahead with the Autocephaly of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine?
How many intentional decisions has this Patriarch made that hurt you and your children? The Patriarch distorts the word of Our Lord over and over and over.
Jane, you ask, “How do we fight evil in a world of lies and confusion?”
Fight back and say NO to everything they throw at us! Do NOT comply and do not fall for their enslavement agenda just around the bend. Orthodox elders and saints have predicted that 90% of Orthodox Christians will fall and comply with the beast system. That’s a huge percentage. God has told us He will provide for us, and we should never doubt His Grace. We must have collective disobedience and never compliance to the demons. Remain steadfast and non- secular as much as possible.
I agree. Refuse all.

Thank you Nick for posting this. It’s imperative Orthodox Christians comprehend the virtues of humility, fighting our pride and our passions whilst remaining obedient to Christ. It’s a daily struggle each day for all of us, but can be obtained if we are on the Royal path to Christ and not living and believing the secular world.
“Struggle, my child, for God’s road is narrow and thorny; not inherently, but because of our passions. Since we want to eradicate from our heart the passions, which are like thorny roots, so that we may plant useful plants, naturally we shall toil greatly and our hands will bleed and our face will sweat. Sometimes even despair will overcome us, seeing roots and passions everywhere!
But with our hope in Christ, the Repairer of our souls, let us diligently work at clearing the earth of our heart. Patience, mourning, humility, obedience, cutting off one’s will—all these virtues help cultivate it. We must apply all our strength, and then God, seeing our labor, comes and blesses it, and thus we make progress.
Take courage, for the toil is temporary and ephemeral, whereas the reward is great in heaven. Struggle and be vigilant with your thoughts. Keep a firm hold on hope, for this shows that your house is founded on the rock—and the rock is our Christ.”
