If Muhammad himself protected it, and then the Crusaders protected it, it became a holy place for the Jews as well. If not even Napoleon dared to touch it, and it withstood the attacks of ISIS. What does it matter that UNESCO has declared it a world cultural heritage monument? In Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi’s Egypt, you will have no other god but tourism — and only the general’s councils are now the law.

Last Wednesday, three judges in Sinai reopened the “governor vs. the monks of the Monastery of St. Catherine” case, reviewed the documents and expert opinions. And they ruled — after fifteen centuries of history and years of pressure dating back to the time of the Muslim Brotherhood — that it was time to change its use: “The state owns the site as public property” and therefore “has the right to use it as it wishes.” From a place of resurrection to a holiday resort.

It has always been the dream of the rais: to transform Saint Catherine and associate it more with the diving of tourists from Sharm El Sheikh than with the Divine. “The goal – a source tells AsiaNews – is to turn it into an attraction similar to the Pyramids or Nile cruises”.

The monastery has always received tourists – 4-5 thousand a week – but in Cairo this is considered little: in the heart of the natural reserve, large hotel units are being planned to attract Americans and Europeans en masse, overcoming the only obstacle: the Greek Orthodox monks, who offer work in the olive groves around the monastery to hundreds of Bedouins, who are not liked by the regime. The siege has lasted for years. And the legal loophole was found when the monks, after pressure from the governor of Sinai, were asked to retrieve from the archives documents from the 6th century that documented their ownership — which are now unreadable. The government judges ruled without a doubt. And where Moses’ rod struck, the decision says, from now on the state treasury will strike: the property of the monastery passes to the state and the monks must abandon their cells, “they will be able to remain only to perform their religious duties, if the new owner allows it,” that is, Al-Sisi.

In Greece, the reaction was immediate. “Scandal,” declared Archbishop Ieronymos: “We are experiencing another decline of Hellenism and Orthodoxy. A violation of religious freedom. The oldest Christian Orthodox monastery is entering a period of severe testing, which awakens memories of dark times.” The powerful Greek community in the US is also reacting: “Saint Catherine is soil trodden by God himself,” Archbishop Elpidophoros declares. “This is a treasure of humanity. Christians, Jews and Muslims have always found peace within its walls. The Egyptian government must commit to its preservation.”

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis raises the monastery’s flag, fears provocation from Islam, promises to “preserve the pilgrimage character” and “resolve the case.” He has already contacted a worried Al-Sisi, who is now, under the weight of the reactions, backing down and recalling “the ancient ties between Greeks and Egyptians,” publicly pledging to “save the unique and sacred religious regime, guaranteeing that it will not be violated.” Twenty days ago, the Egyptian president had also spoken about the monastery during his official visit to Athens, while the Foreign Minister was quick to assure him that no one would ever touch Saint Catherine: “Its religious and archaeological significance will remain completely intact,” as the judges’ decision and the state claims concern “only some of the monks’ lands, far from the monastery.”

Is the fight over? Not exactly. According to the Pontifical Institute for Foreign Missions (PIME), the decision to close the monastery remains open. And diplomatic sources estimate that Saint Catherine may end up being the subject of a trade. Greece and Egypt recently signed a €5 billion plan to lay 1,000 km of undersea cables: as an alternative to Russian natural gas, they will transport cheap energy from North Africa to Europe. Speaking with Mitsotakis about both the cables and the monastery, Al-Sisi did not promise that the tourism plans for the Sinai would be revised. “That’s where the energy we give you comes from, that’s where our future is.” And what if a little history is sold in exchange…

Στην Αίγυπτο του Αμπντέλ Φατάχ Αλ Σίσι, δεν θα έχεις άλλον θεό εκτός από τον τουρισμό — και μόνο οι βουλές του στρατηγού είναι πλέον πλάκες του νόμου.

Την περασμένη Τετάρτη, τρεις δικαστές του Σινά επανέφεραν στη δημοσιότητα τον φάκελο «ο κυβερνήτης εναντίον των μοναχών του Μοναστηριού της Αγίας Αικατερίνης», ανέτρεξαν στα έγγραφα και τις πραγματογνωμοσύνες. Και αποφάνθηκαν —μετά από δεκαπέντε αιώνες ιστορίας και χρόνια πιέσεων ήδη από την εποχή των Αδελφών Μουσουλμάνων— πως ήρθε η ώρα να αλλάξει χρήση: «Το κράτος είναι ιδιοκτήτης του χώρου ως δημόσια περιουσία» και συνεπώς «έχει το δικαίωμα να τον αξιοποιήσει κατά βούληση». Το μοναστήρι ανέκαθεν δεχόταν τουρίστες —4-5 χιλιάδες την εβδομάδα— αλλά στο Κάιρο αυτό θεωρείται λίγο: στην καρδιά του φυσικού καταφυγίου σχεδιάζονται μεγάλες ξενοδοχειακές μονάδες για να προσελκύσουν μαζικά Αμερικανούς και Ευρωπαίους, υπερπηδώντας το μοναδικό εμπόδιο: τους Ελληνορθόδοξους μοναχούς, οι οποίοι στα ελαιόδεντρα γύρω από τη μονή προσφέρουν εργασία σε εκατοντάδες Βεδουίνους, μη αρεστούς στο καθεστώς. Η πολιορκία κρατά χρόνια. Και το νομικό παραθυράκι βρέθηκε όταν ζητήθηκε από τους μοναχούς, έπειτα από πιέσεις του κυβερνήτη του Σινά, να ανασύρουν από τα αρχεία έγγραφα του 6ου αιώνα που να τεκμηριώνουν την ιδιοκτησία τους — τα οποία είναι πλέον άφαντα. Οι κυβερνητικοί δικαστές αποφάνθηκαν χωρίς αμφιβολία. Κι εκεί όπου κτύπησε το ραβδί του Μωυσή, λέει η απόφαση, από εδώ και στο εξής θα κτυπά το ταμείο του κράτους: η ιδιοκτησία του μοναστηριού περνά στο κράτος και οι μοναχοί οφείλουν να εγκαταλείψουν τα κελιά τους, «θα μπορούν να παραμένουν μόνο για να επιτελούν τα θρησκευτικά τους καθήκοντα, εφόσον το επιτρέπει ο νέος ιδιοκτήτης», δηλαδή ο Αλ Σίσι.

Στην Ελλάδα, η αντίδραση ήταν άμεση. «Σκάνδαλο», δήλωσε ο αρχιεπίσκοπος Ιερώνυμος: «Βιώνουμε άλλη μία πτώση του Ελληνισμού και της Ορθοδοξίας. Παραβίαση της θρησκευτικής ελευθερίας. Το αρχαιότερο χριστιανικό ορθόδοξο μοναστήρι εισέρχεται σε μία περίοδο σκληρής δοκιμασίας, που ξυπνά μνήμες σκοτεινών εποχών». Αντιδρά και η ισχυρή ελληνική κοινότητα των ΗΠΑ: «Η Αγία Αικατερίνη είναι χώμα πατημένο από τον ίδιο τον Θεό», δηλώνει ο αρχιεπίσκοπος Ελπιδοφόρος. «Αυτός είναι ένας θησαυρός της ανθρωπότητας. Στους τοίχους της βρήκαν πάντα ειρήνη χριστιανοί, εβραίοι και μουσουλμάνοι. Η αιγυπτιακή κυβέρνηση οφείλει να δεσμευτεί για τη διατήρησή της».

Τελείωσε ο καβγάς; Όχι ακριβώς. Σύμφωνα με το Ποντιφικό Ινστιτούτο Εξωτερικών Ιεραποστολών (PIME), η απόφαση για το κλείσιμο του μοναστηριού παραμένει ανοιχτή. Και διπλωματικές πηγές εκτιμούν ότι η Αγία Αικατερίνη ίσως καταλήξει αντικείμενο ανταλλαγής. Η Ελλάδα και η Αίγυπτος υπέγραψαν πρόσφατα σχέδιο ύψους 5 δισ. ευρώ για την πόντιση 1.000 χλμ. υποθαλάσσιων καλωδίων: ως εναλλακτική στο ρωσικό φυσικό αέριο, θα μεταφέρουν φθηνή ενέργεια από τη Βόρεια Αφρική στην Ευρώπη. Μιλώντας με τον Μητσοτάκη τόσο για τα καλώδια όσο και για το μοναστήρι, ο Αλ Σίσι δεν υποσχέθηκε ότι θα αναθεωρηθούν τα τουριστικά σχέδια εκμετάλλευσης του Σινά. «Από εκεί έρχεται η ενέργεια που σας δίνουμε, εκεί είναι το μέλλον μας».
