EDITOR’S NOTE (Nick Stamatakis). I was overcome by nostalgia today… Zambetas lived a couple of miles away from my home in Piraeus… and Christodoulou’s poetry is unsurpassed in its laconic simplicity… The song “Den Ehei Dromo Na Statho” (“There is no road to cross”) is one of the most iconic and moving pieces of Greek popular music. It combines the deeply human poetry of Kostas Christodoulou with the unique melodic power and distinctive style of Giorgos Zampetas.
The song expresses the pain of loss, loneliness, and personal wandering. The narrator, trapped in a world without refuge or comfort, describes his emotional state through imagery of roads and wandering — a street with no pause, no rest, no hope. Zampetas’s music brings out the heartbreak in the lyrics, with the characteristic melodies of the bouzouki directly “conversing” with the listener’s inner world. The song has stood the test of time, powerfully performed by Zampetas himself and by other great artists, and remains a living testament to the authentic soul of Greek folk music.

There is no road to cross
There isn’t [a] day that I don’t speak
