Axios reported earlier this week that the Trump administration is pressuring several European allies—including Greece—to send Patriot air defense systems to Ukraine amid Kyiv’s increasingly desperate pleas for protection from Russian missile and drone attacks. The report highlights that the U.S. seeks “a temporary transfer” of Patriot batteries to cover the ongoing gap in Ukraine’s air defense umbrella until Washington can ramp up production or free up its own stocks【1】.
However, for Greece, this request carries significant strategic implications.
Greek Air Defense Already Stretched Thin
What Axios and others fail to mention is that Greece has already deployed at least two Patriot missile batteries to Saudi Arabia, part of a military cooperation agreement to protect critical oil infrastructure. These batteries are operated by Greek personnel, reducing the number of available systems for domestic defense and further overextending Greek military capabilities in a volatile region【2】.
Even more alarming is that in the past three years, Greece has reportedly transferred multiple air defense systems from its Aegean islands—including short- and medium-range SAMs such as the OSA-AKM and TOR-M1—to Ukraine. These systems were vital for deterring Turkish air provocations in the Aegean and their removal has weakened the defensive posture of Greek islands like Lesvos, Chios, and Samos, despite ongoing tensions with Ankara【3】.
Patriot System: A Controversial Shield
While Patriot systems are often portrayed as a gold standard in Western air defense, their performance has come under increasing scrutiny in recent years. In both Saudi Arabia and Israel, Patriots failed to intercept several high-profile missile and drone attacks. The 2019 drone and missile attack on Aramco’s oil facilities, launched by Houthi forces using Iranian technology, penetrated Saudi airspace despite the presence of Patriot systems【4】.
In Israel, military planners were so dissatisfied with the Patriot’s limitations—especially against ballistic and hypersonic threats—that they invested heavily in developing their own Arrow-2 and Arrow-3 missile defense systems, capable of exo-atmospheric interceptions【5】.
Even Ukrainian military commanders have privately expressed doubts about the effectiveness of the Patriot against Russia’s new-generation hypersonic missiles like the Kinzhal. While Kyiv has claimed some successful interceptions, numerous videos and field reports suggest the system is overwhelmed by saturation attacks or bypassed entirely by maneuverable missiles【6】.
Strategic Imbalance and Geopolitical Risk
If Greece caves to U.S. pressure and transfers even one of its remaining Patriot batteries to Ukraine, it could create a dangerous air defense vacuum at home—especially on key Aegean islands and border zones. With Turkey continuing its aggressive overflights and with no NATO guarantee for island defense, such a move could embolden Ankara and destabilize the Eastern Mediterranean further.
Moreover, this would mark yet another example of Western powers depleting allied arsenals for a war with no end in sight, while ignoring those allies’ own legitimate security concerns.
Conclusion
Before making any decisions about further depleting its air defense assets, Greece must reassess its national priorities, especially at a time when the region remains volatile and Turkish ambitions persist. Sending more Patriots to Ukraine—systems already questioned for their cost-effectiveness and reliability—could ultimately undermine Greek security while contributing little to Ukraine’s defense against advanced missile threats.

Mr. Trump should realign his pressuring tactics; and consider first to remove The Turkish Occupation of at least 1/3 of the Island of Cyprus! The Greek Naton has no business, of draining its military resources, no geopolitical interest in being involved in a civil war between
Ukraine and Russia. It is Dis- ingenuous for NATO/USA to ignore the 51st anniversary of the Invasion of Cyprus since July 20th, 1974. The blind eye, oversight, simultaneously by NATO- in complicity with the USA due to -Mr. Trump’s lack of institutional control, to erode and diminish the Hellenic Power of Influence in the Medditerannean Sea. This is -totally unacceptable, to put Greek Sovereignty in harm’s way- Please Mr. Trump review your policy as your picture of the Aegean Sea is Flawed on its Merits!! You, Mr. Trump you are on the wrong side of history, The Founding Fathers are rolling in their graves-Why? there is not one State in the USA that does not have a Greek Name
