Politico’s Latest Slap Exposes a Government in Rot
By Helleniscope’s Editorial Team
On August 6, Politico delivered a blistering blow to the paper-thin credibility of Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, exposing what the European Public Prosecutor’s Office (EPPO) calls one of the largest orchestrated subsidy frauds in European history. Armed with a 3,000-page dossier, prosecutors unearthed a web of fake claims, fraudulent payments, and political protection—at the center of which stands the Mitsotakis government, shielding its own ministers from legal scrutiny.

In a move that stinks of authoritarian arrogance, the Mitsotakis-controlled parliament has refused to lift immunity for implicated ministers. Instead of enabling justice, the ruling New Democracy party has barricaded its inner circle behind parliamentary privilege—an insult to every honest Greek taxpayer and a brazen mockery of EU law.
Greece Fined Nearly €400 Million for Corruption, It Refuses to Prosecute
The European Union has responded with fury—not with words, but with action. In June 2025, Brussels slammed Greece with a €392.2 million fine, the most significant farm subsidy penalty in EU history, citing “systemic and repeated fraud” in the disbursement of Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) funds from 2016 to 2022. This is not a clerical error or bureaucratic mishap—this is criminal abuse of EU money under the nose of a government that now refuses to prosecute those responsible.
The EU has also slashed future subsidies by 5%, pulling nearly half a billion euros in expected funds away from real Greek farmers—honest citizens now forced to suffer for the sins of a parasitic political class.
Laura Kövesi’s Legal Assault on Greece’s Deep State
Enter Laura Kövesi, the relentless head of the European Public Prosecutor’s Office (EPPO). Her team has not only uncovered the fraud but has faced obstruction, intimidation, and outright contempt from Greek officials. Her May 2025 raids on OPEKEPE—the agency at the heart of the scandal—were met with resistance so severe that it forced the removal of the agency’s president. Kövesi’s crime? Doing her job.
Despite stonewalling from Athens, EPPO has continued to investigate former and sitting ministers—Makis Voridis, Lefteris Avgenakis, and others—who stand accused of overseeing subsidy payouts to fake farmers, ghost livestock owners, and political allies. In the words of one EPPO official, what’s been uncovered is not negligence, but a “criminal organization embedded within the state apparatus.”
Semertzidou’s Resignation: Too Little, Too Late
As public pressure mounts, Kalliopi Semertzidou, the ruling party’s EU funds coordinator, was forced to resign after it emerged that she and her husband received over €2.5 million in questionable subsidies. Her resignation letter was pure theater: no apology, no admission—only vague appeals to party loyalty. Semertzidou was seen driving a high-end Ferrari in social media posts, sparking public outrage given the rural subsidy scandal.

She is not under investigation. Why? Because she, like so many others, has the protection of a regime that seems to prefer omertà over accountability.
A Political Crisis Masquerading as Governance
This is no longer just a corruption scandal—it is a governance crisis. The Greek people are watching their democracy hollowed out from within. Parliament is no longer a house of the people—it has become a fortress shielding party elites from justice. Mitsotakis, far from upholding law and order, has chosen to protect a network of loyalists and bureaucrats whose hands are red with European money.
Opposition parties have called for a full criminal investigation. Mitsotakis responded with indifference, betting that the public’s outrage will fade.
But this time, he may have bet wrong.
Final Verdict: The Mitsotakis Deep State Has Crossed the Line
This is not just the most egregious abuse of EU funds since Greece joined the bloc—it is a betrayal of the very promise of democratic reform. A government elected on the mantle of transparency has transformed itself into a cartel of self-protection and enrichment, weaponizing institutions to shield the guilty and silence dissent.
The fine from Brussels—nearly €400 million—is more than punitive. It is a moral condemnation. But this is no longer just a European matter. The rot within Greece has metastasized: financially, politically, and socially. Under the Mitsotakis regime—rightly described by many as a “mafia family”—the country is spiraling toward collapse.
With regional tensions in the Eastern Mediterranean escalating, the consequences of this internal decay threaten not only Greece’s sovereignty but also the stability of the broader geopolitical balance.
It is no longer enough to speak of reform. It is time to act. Those who love this country—whether in public office or not—must summon the courage to break ranks, abandon the compromised political class, and forge a new patriotic front. A new political formation must rise—rooted in patriotism, national dignity, transparency, and justice—to reclaim Greece’s future before it is lost entirely.

Greece has a well earned reputation of being the most corrupt country in the EU. Greeks were always known as cheaters in business. What we Greeks considsered Greeks’ business genious, was actually plain old thievery. The big shipowners like Niarchos, Onassis, Latsis and others expended their number of ships by collecting insurance for ships that were sunk intentionally, with human lives lost. Europeans have had it. And I dont bsame them
I was hoping that Mitsaotakis was above that. He looks like a technocrat, modern European leader. He faced so many challenges and has steered the ship of state competently. Greece’s economy, job market, stock market are all on the upswing.
If he personally profited from the subsidies, it would be an unforgivale stain. And I would hope he’ll pay for it with a prison term. Somewhow, for Greece’s sake, I hope he wasn’t personally involved and was unaware of it.
Kalliopi is a filthy crook. Mitsotakis is a filthy PM. Prayers for the farmers.
