In Anchorage on the Feast of the Assumption, Russian President Vladimir Putin met with Archbishop Alexei of Sitka and Alaska, a hierarch of the Orthodox Church in America. The moment quickly turned into an exchange of sacred gifts filled with symbolic meaning.
President Putin offered the Archbishop an icon of St. Herman of Alaska, reminding him that “St. Herman, from the point of view of the Orthodox Church, is the protector of America.” The Archbishop, visibly moved, responded with his own offering — an icon he had received on Mount Athos when he was consecrated bishop, which for four years had stood in his personal prayer corner. In his words, the Archbishop underlined the depth of this gesture:
“Russia gave us what we value most, and what we will always be grateful for — the Orthodox faith. This is what unites us at the foundation of our being.”
He added that the exchange expressed the gratitude of Alaska’s native peoples to the country that once sent missionaries across the Pacific.
The conversation went beyond faith into shared historical memory. Archbishop Alexei recalled the Russian veterans buried on Alaskan soil, stressing that their sacrifice “unites our heroic past and creates conditions for moving forward.”
Putin, in turn, thanked the Archbishop for his prayers and hospitality, affirming that the respect shown to Russian war veterans in Alaska “demonstrates the honor with which you treat the veterans of our war.”
The encounter, punctuated by references to dialogue with President Trump earlier in the day, showed how spiritual heritage and geopolitical currents intersect in Alaska, a land long shaped by Russian Orthodoxy.
