There must be a reason why so many high-tech CEOs – first among them Elon Musk – have visited Greece and have established research labs there; three years ago, TESLA, whose engine and battery team consists of engineers from the famous Athens Polytechnic, established a research lab within Greece’s National Laboratory “Democritus”… And this reason lies within our DNA and should make all of us and especially our children very proud!!

On September 5, 2025, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman made a historic visit to Thessaloniki, Greece, where he announced a groundbreaking partnership aimed at integrating artificial intelligence (AI) into Greek education and fostering technological innovation across the country. This landmark agreement between Greece and OpenAI is set to revolutionize the way AI is utilized in schools and startups, positioning Greece as a leader in AI-powered education. 

A Pioneering Partnership: Greece and OpenAI

The memorandum of understanding signed between Greece and OpenAI marks the beginning of a bold new chapter in the integration of AI into the educational sector. Under this partnership, Greece will be one of the first countries in the world to implement ChatGPT Edu, a customized version of OpenAI’s language model specifically tailored for academic use. This initiative is designed to improve the quality of education by enhancing both teaching and learning experiences, with a strong emphasis on building AI literacy from the ground up.

In addition to benefiting schools, the agreement also includes provisions to support Greek startups in sectors such as healthcare, education, and climate change. By providing access to OpenAI’s advanced tools and resources, these startups will have the opportunity to scale and innovate more efficiently, accelerating Greece’s position as a hub for cutting-edge technology and entrepreneurial growth.

Introducing AI in Greek Classrooms

At the Thessaloniki International Fair, Altman introduced OpenAI’s ambitious “AI in Schools” program, which aims to bring AI tools into classrooms across Greece. The program is designed to support teachers in enhancing their productivity and improving the learning experience for students. The integration of AI will empower teachers with personalized teaching assistants, enabling them to focus on fostering critical thinking and creativity in their students, while leaving routine tasks to AI.

The pilot phase of the program will begin with upper-secondary schools across Greece, selected to reflect the country’s regional and socio-economic diversity. In this initial phase, teachers and students will be introduced to AI tools designed to improve teaching methodologies and help students grasp complex subjects more effectively. The goal is to create a seamless integration of AI into the curriculum, where technology acts as a facilitator of knowledge rather than a replacement for traditional learning methods.

Building AI Literacy and Expanding Horizons

One of the central goals of the “AI in Schools” program is to build AI literacy in students from an early age, preparing them for the future of work in an AI-driven world. As part of the initiative, Greek educators will be trained on how to integrate AI into their teaching practices, ensuring they remain at the forefront of educational innovation. Furthermore, students will be encouraged to explore AI and develop the skills necessary for thriving in tomorrow’s economy.

Following the success of the pilot phase, the program is expected to expand across all secondary education levels, further embedding AI into the fabric of Greek education. Empowering Greek Startups with AI

Altman’s visit also highlighted OpenAI’s commitment to empowering Greek startups. In addition to the “AI in Schools” program, OpenAI unveiled a new initiative: the Greek AI Accelerator Program. This program is designed to support local founders by offering mentorship from OpenAI engineers, tailored workshops on AI scaling, and opportunities to connect with investors and innovators in the AI space.

The program will focus on helping startups harness AI in fields such as healthcare, education, and environmental sustainability. By providing these companies with access to OpenAI’s powerful tools and technical expertise, the initiative aims to accelerate the growth of Greek AI companies and foster a robust startup ecosystem in Greece.

A Vision for the Future: Discussions with Greek Leadership

During his visit, Sam Altman engaged in discussions with Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and other political leaders. Mitsotakis emphasized the potential of AI to transform Greece’s education system and the country’s broader economy. He stressed the importance of preparing Greek students for a future dominated by AI and technology, highlighting the need for regulatory frameworks that ensure AI is used responsibly and ethically.

Prime Minister Mitsotakis also acknowledged the potential challenges AI poses, particularly with regard to its impact on children’s mental health. He emphasized the importance of implementing policies that protect students while maximizing the benefits of AI in the classroom. This conversation set the stage for a broader dialogue on how AI can contribute to Greece’s long-term goals of innovation, sustainability, and economic growth.

    • AI will present humanity with challenges – as it happens with all technological revolutions. This time it will be more difficult than in the past for obvious reasons. To overcome these challenges we will need the brightest minds… There is no better place than Greece for such a critical task… The main challenge has to do with preserving humanity’s basic mental functions and at a second phase its freedoms. Hellenic minds are best equipped to deal with such tasks than any other ethnicity on the planet..

      • AI Data Center Toxicity. Getting smart requires review of the pros and cons.

        Increased Contaminant Discharge
        The demand for liquid and hybrid cooling systems in data centers is expected to introduce a significant amount of contaminants into wastewater. These contaminants can include:
        • Biocides (such as isothiazolinones and glutaraldehyde) which can cause allergies and skin irritation.
        • Corrosion Inhibitors (like phosphates and molybdates) contribute to eutrophication and negatively affect marine life.
        • Heavy Metals (including zinc, copper, and chromium) which are carcinogenic and can harm the skin, respiratory system, and kidneys.
        • Total Dissolved Solids (consisting of common dissolved minerals and salts) that may result in kidney stones and organ stress.

        US building 50 massive AI data processing centers. Zuck building the largest one in Texas the size of Manhattan Island. They will be fully operational by 2027. Water shortages will take place. Ex. Draining farmlands. What is the reason? They are being built in every country. Why? Energy field trap.

        The cooling system in a single large scale data center uses 5 million gallons of water ‘daily’.  The water becomes toxic waste water and is discharged into the localities sewage system.   The U.S. Department of Energy indicates that data centers will consume as much as 580 TWh annually in 2028, which will double by 2030 130x more than a nuclear plant generates representing 12% of our current grid.

Yet most schools have not equipped students with the skills to evaluate AI’s accuracy, recognize bias, or understand when and how it should be used.” Child Trends

    Personally, I would take a pass on Sam Altman’s vision for children.

  2. I don’t see the education part of this as a good thing. The schools that are producing the best and most virtuous thinkers are using classically oriented methods of teaching.
