The European Chief Prosecutor’s arrival signals a bold move to tackle systemic corruption in Greece, from agricultural fraud to rail disaster mismanagement.

Laura Kövesi, the European Chief Prosecutor, is set to arrive in Athens tomorrow for a pivotal visit that highlights the European Public Prosecutor’s Office (EPPO)’s ongoing efforts to combat cross-border financial crimes across the EU. During her stay, Kövesi is scheduled to meet with key Greek officials, including Minister of Justice Giorgos Florides, Minister of National Economy and Finance Kyriacos Pierrakakis, and Prosecutor of the Supreme Court Konstantinos Tzavelas. These discussions will focus on strengthening Greece’s cooperation with the EPPO, particularly in the context of high-profile investigations into corruption and misuse of EU funds.
One of the central cases under Kövesi’s scrutiny involves the OPEKEPE scandal, a massive €2.9 million agricultural subsidy fraud where individuals fraudulently claimed EU agricultural subsidies for non-existent or non-leased pastures. This investigation has uncovered deep-rooted corruption in Greece’s agricultural payment agency. Additionally, Kövesi will oversee the ongoing investigation into the Tempi rail disaster, which killed 57 people in 2023. The EPPO is probing allegations of mismanagement and corruption tied to a €41 million EU-funded rail modernization project, with more than 30 individuals implicated.
During her visit, Kövesi will also tour the EPPO’s Athens office and hold a press conference to update the public on the progress of these investigations and reaffirm the EPPO’s critical role in protecting EU financial interests. Despite facing resistance, including physical obstruction by Greek agency staff, Kövesi remains resolute in her mission to ensure justice prevails across the EU.
This visit is a clear signal of the EPPO’s expanding influence and its commitment to holding accountable those who undermine the integrity of the European Union’s financial systems.
As Kövesi works to strengthen Greece’s cooperation with the EPPO and advance crucial investigations, one can only hope her visit marks a decisive step in ending the flagrant corruption that continues to tarnish Greece’s institutions and undermine the European Union’s integrity.
