EDITOR’S NOTE (Nick Stamatakis). The official trailer for the biographical film “Kapodistrias”, directed by acclaimed filmmaker Yannis Smaragdis, has been released to the public.
The world premiere will take place in New York, at the Museum of the Moving Image, on November 29. The Athens premiere is scheduled for December 15, and the film will be released in cinemas nationwide on December 25.
Helleniscope will serve as the coordinator of the New York premiere, which is organized under the auspices of “The Know Thyself Initiative” in collaboration with numerous Hellenic American organizations, including: the Hellenic Film Society, the Ionian Cultural Federation, the Hellenic American National Council (HANC), the Eastern Mediterranean Business and Cultural Alliance (EMBCA), the World Council of Eptanisians, the World Federation of Kefalonian and Ithacian Societies, the “Kefalos” Cephalonian Society of America, the Pancretan Association of America, the World Council of Cretans, and the Federation of Hellenic Societies of Greater New York.
Set in the early 19th century, this historical film tells the true story of Ioannis Kapodistrias, the Greek statesman and first Governor of Greece, following the nation’s liberation from Ottoman rule. According to Smaragdis and others, Kapodistrias was the greatest Greek statesman after Pericles!!
Kapodistrias defends the freedom and dignity of every human being with courage, compassion, and integrity—sacrificing even the great love of his life. Fearless in the face of evil, he renounces wealth, glory, and international acclaim for the sake of his ideals.
When Greece finally gained its independence, Kapodistrias was called upon to lead as its first Governor. Though he foresees his assassination, he accepts his fate without hesitation and dedicates himself entirely to his country. Through this ultimate act of service and sacrifice, he attains true freedom.
Beyond his monumental impact on Greece and Hellenism, Kapodistrias also played a key role in shaping the Swiss Constitution, portions of which—written in his own hand—remain unchanged to this day. Switzerland continues to operate under this unique model of direct democracy, where crucial decisions are made by the people themselves, not by corrupt parliamentary representatives.
