EDITOR’S NOTE (Nick Stamatakis). In 2015, the discovery of the Griffin Warrior’s tomb near Pylos transformed our understanding of Greek origins. DNA extracted from the warrior revealed not a northern invader but a descendant of the first Neolithic farmers from Anatolia and the Balkans. His lineage, marked by the ancient haplogroup J2A, connected him to the very roots of Aegean civilization. Subsequent genetic research confirmed that the majority of Mycenaean and Minoan ancestry—and by extension, that of modern Greeks—derives from these early settlers who arrived over 7,000 years ago, carrying with them agriculture, craftsmanship, and the foundations of what would become Greek culture.
Through centuries of turmoil—Bronze Age collapse, Persian invasions, Roman conquest, and Ottoman rule—the genetic continuity of the Greek people endured with remarkable stability. Studies show that while invaders came and went, their genetic impact was minimal. The maternal lines of Greek women, passed down unchanged for millennia, testify to this endurance. From the Minoans and Mycenaeans to the citizens of Classical Athens and Byzantium, the DNA tells a single story: a people who absorbed ideas but preserved their identity, linking modern Greeks directly to the builders of palaces, poets of epic, and founders of democracy.
Modern genetic projects like HELIC confirm this unbroken thread. Cretans still carry the DNA of the Minoans; mainland Greeks trace their ancestry to ancient Mycenae. Even after four centuries of Ottoman occupation, genetic mixing remained below 2%. Today, science affirms what Greek memory has long preserved—that the Hellenic lineage is among the oldest continuous civilizations on Earth. The story of Greece, written not just in marble and myth but in blood and bone, is one of survival, faith, and an unbroken bond with the past.

It is an honor to comment on my long time friend from Seattle WA now deceased, Dr. George Stamatoyiannopoulos , a UW renowned geneticist on his study on the subject matter over ten years ago along with Dr. Lazaridis from Havard. The DNA research revealed and confirmed, particularly in Lasithi Crete, that Modern Greeks have linkage to the Minoan and Mycenaean Ancient Hellenic Civilizations. Historian Falmeyer, was wrong on his faulty opinion on Modern Greeks, on his misguidance of misinformation by bloodline, that we have no connection to the Ancient Greek World! Case Closed!!
Fallmerayer was one of a long line of Germans seeking to discredit Greece and destroy / control the Greek state. The Nazis used his writings positing that “Greeks are Albanians” to justify occupation, looting and murder. He was politically motivated in all things, thereby discrediting himself in the process.
