Their November 7, 2025 letter—signed by former Ambassador Sam Brownback, Dr. Ben Carson, Tony Perkins, Ralph Reed, and scores of pastors, broadcasters, and national ministry heads—declared that Syria’s Christian, Druze, Kurdish, and Alawite minorities were entering a moment of existential danger. They cited ongoing massacres, starvation, water deprivation, medical blockades, and ISIS hostage-taking, particularly in the greater Suwayda region.

The letter urged Trump to use his upcoming meeting with Syria’s new president to secure one concrete action:

A humanitarian corridor from Hader to Suwayda—immediately.

This corridor, they wrote, would provide protected access for food, water, medicine, and civilian evacuation. It would also be the first real test of whether the new Syrian leadership had any intention of respecting human rights or protecting religious minorities.

The signatories acknowledged Trump’s past advocacy for persecuted Christians, but warned that now he stood at a crossroads—one requiring courage, clarity, and moral steel.

II. The Man Entering the White House

The man these Christian leaders wanted Trump to confront was Ahmed al-Sharaa, known for most of his adult life as Abu Mohammad al-Julani—former emir of Jabhat al-Nusra, Al-Qaeda’s branch in Syria, and later the leader of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS).

The significance was staggering:

• Ten months prior, the U.S. government maintained a $10 million bounty for information leading to his capture.

• He had been designated a Specially Designated Global Terrorist.

• His forces had been accused of expelling Christian communities, destroying churches, abducting civilians, and enforcing hard-line Islamist rule.

Yet on November 10, 2025, this same man walked into the White House under full diplomatic protection—his terrorist designation removed, sanctions easing, and his international legitimacy rapidly rising.

III. A Meeting Behind Closed Doors

The White House arranged Sharaa’s arrival through a back entrance, away from cameras, without a press pool, without questions, and without any public protocol normally afforded to foreign heads of state.

Only later did a handful of photos leak confirming that not only did the meeting take place in the Oval Office, but that Senator Marco Rubio also attended.

Reports indicate that the participants discussed:

• Regional stability

• U.S.–Syria relations

• Possible modifications to the Caesar sanctions

• Humanitarian conditions in southern Syria

But the secrecy—and the identity of the man being hosted—ignited immediate backlash.

IV. The Firestorm

Two voices on the American right—both typically aligned with Trump—reacted with outrage:

Marjorie Taylor Greene (MTG)

MTG blasted Trump for hosting “a former Al-Qaeda terrorist” on the 250th anniversary of the U.S. Marine Corps, calling the visit an insult to those who fought Islamist extremism.

Laura Loomer

Loomer, who recently gained remarkable influence in Trump’s political orbit, accused Sharaa of ongoing atrocities:

• Blocking humanitarian corridors

• Overseeing massacres of Druze and Christian communities

• Weaponizing starvation in regions like Suwayda

• Continuing the same militant agenda he pursued under Al-Qaeda’s banner

She warned bluntly:

“If President Trump is going to normalize him on U.S. soil, he must demand that Julani stop killing religious minorities.”

V. The Deep Historical Echo

To many observers, the Sharaa meeting did not emerge from nowhere; it echoed a troubling pattern in U.S. involvement in Syria’s brutal civil war.

From 2013 to 2017, the CIA ran Timber Sycamore, the largest covert operation in its history. Many mainstream investigations—New York Times, WSJ, Guardian—reported that U.S.-supplied weapons repeatedly fell into the hands of extremist groups, including factions tied to Al-Qaeda and ISIS.
These reports do not claim deliberate material support—but they show that U.S. actions consistently destabilized the region and empowered jihadist players.

Photos of Sen. John McCain’s 2013 visit to rebel leaders in northern Syria—one of whom was later accused of extremist affiliation—became emblematic of the blurred lines in Washington’s Syria policy.
These images became part of an enduring narrative: America’s political and intelligence establishment has repeatedly misjudged Islamist actors in Syria.

Against this backdrop, Sharaa’s diplomatic welcome in Washington marked a new milestone in a long string of morally fraught decisions.

VI. Why the Letter Is the Story’s Moral Center

The Christian leaders’ letter is not merely a document of protest—it is the moral backbone of the entire controversy. It is the one element in the story that calls for clear action, not symbolism.

Its demand is laser-focused:

Force Sharaa to open the humanitarian corridor.
Protect Christians and other minorities.
Stop the massacres.

Their message to Trump is unmistakable: if he is going to host a man who only ten months earlier carried a $10 million terrorist bounty, then he must extract something meaningful, immediate, and lifesaving.

In their view, the crisis in southern Syria is not only geopolitical—it is biblical in scale. And they are asking Trump, once again, to step into the role they believe history has reserved for him.
