The deepening energy and security cooperation between Greece, Cyprus, and Israel has triggered sharp and increasingly confrontational reactions from Turkey and the Turkish Cypriot leadership, underscoring Ankara’s growing sense of strategic isolation in the Eastern Mediterranean.
Turkish and Turkish Cypriot officials have portrayed the trilateral partnership—especially its emerging military dimension—as a deliberate attempt to exclude Turkey and undermine its maritime and geopolitical claims. The harshest rhetoric followed a recent high-level summit in Jerusalem, where Greece, Cyprus, and Israel reportedly discussed expanding defense coordination and the possible creation of a joint rapid-reaction force. In Ankara and northern Cyprus, this initiative has been framed not as a stabilizing mechanism but as an explicitly hostile move aimed at Turkish interests.

The Prime Minister of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus publicly condemned the summit, accusing the Greek Cypriot leadership of pursuing “anti-Turkey plans” while claiming to support regional peace. He warned that military structures formed without Turkey and the Turkish Cypriots would transform the Eastern Mediterranean into a zone of confrontation and were therefore “doomed to fail.” Such statements closely align with Ankara’s long-standing argument that regional energy and security frameworks excluding Turkey lack legitimacy and sustainability.
Turkish media outlets amplified this message with unusually blunt language. Major pro-government newspapers and broadcasters described the Greece–Cyprus–Israel partnership as a “dirty front” or an “anti-Turkish bloc,” arguing that the trilateral axis is designed to encircle Turkey strategically and curtail its influence at sea. Commentaries emphasized that cooperation on offshore gas development and undersea infrastructure—long a pillar of the trilateral relationship—has now acquired a military character, confirming Ankara’s suspicion that energy projects are being securitized against Turkey.
The reaction must also be understood in the context of Turkey’s broader “Blue Homeland” doctrine, which treats much of the Eastern Mediterranean as vital to Turkish sovereignty and national security. From Ankara’s perspective, joint military planning among Greece, Cyprus, and Israel strengthens rival maritime claims and indirectly legitimizes Greek Cypriot control over hydrocarbon resources that Turkey insists must be shared with Turkish Cypriots.
Israeli media reporting on Ankara’s response highlighted the depth of Turkish irritation, noting that Turkish officials interpreted the Jerusalem summit as a symbolic and strategic snub. This reaction comes amid already strained Turkish-Israeli relations, adding another layer of tension to Ankara’s reading of the trilateral alliance.
Overall, Turkey’s harsh reaction reflects more than opposition to a single summit or military proposal. It reveals a persistent fear that the Eastern Mediterranean is being reorganized politically, energetically, and militarily without Turkey—an outcome Ankara views as unacceptable and destabilizing. As Greece, Cyprus, and Israel continue to institutionalize their cooperation, Turkish rhetoric suggests that regional polarization, rather than accommodation, is likely to intensify.
