Prologue

The philosopher Heraclitus, in the sixth century BCE, said that war is the father and king of all things. History proved him right. Countless wars have shaken and often destroyed societies and civilizations for millennia. Philosophers, lawmakers, and intellectuals spoke and wrote in vain that war brings tears, rivers of blood, the death of innocents, and the birth of hatred and revenge that lead to more wars. Rarely, however, war also becomes the cause of freedom and rebirth.

Persians and Greeks

In the fifth century BCE, the Persians had a vast monarchical empire in Asia Minor that bordered the Greek city-states near the Aegean Sea. Greek cities such as Miletus were cradles of philosophy, science, and culture. In the seventh century BCE, Miletus gave us the first Greek natural philosopher, Thales, and in the sixth century BCE Anaximander and Anaximenes.

Thales studied the Earth and the heavens. He proposed that the Earth floats on water; that is, water was the fundamental element of all things. He predicted solar eclipses and was both an astronomer and cosmologist. His student Anaximander spoke of the apeiron (the infinite), from which the universe was created. Anaximenes taught that air was the fundamental element of the universe.

Miletus and the other cities of Ionia in Asia Minor were beacons of Greek science and philosophy. They had excellent relations with the city-states of mainland Greece. They worshipped the gods of Homer and Hesiod, and of course they spoke Greek. Their athletes competed in the Olympic and other Panhellenic games.

Persia did not view the neighboring Greek cities favorably. These cities asked for help from the Greek states. In 499 BCE, Athens and Eretria of Euboea aided the Ionian cities. A few years later, in 490 BCE, the Persian king Darius took revenge on Eretria. He destroyed the city and enslaved its inhabitants.

These hostilities against the Ionian cities—especially the barbaric attack and destruction of Eretria, an ally of Athens—became the spark for the Persian Wars against Greece from 490 to 479 BCE.

In 490 BCE, a large Persian army arrived at Marathon in Attica. The army of Athens was smaller in comparison to the Persians, but brave and ready to die for freedom. The Athenians won through courage, virtue, and strategy.

Ten years later, in 480 BCE, the Persians launched a second invasion of Greece with an even larger army and navy.

In the fifth century BCE, the historian Herodotus wrote the history of the Persian Wars. He tells us that rivalry among Greek city-states helped Persia pursue its conquering policy in Greece. The Persian king Xerxes was so megalomaniacal that he planned to conquer Greece so that his empire would reach the heavens and the sun would shine only on land that belonged to him (Herodotus, Histories 7.8).

Xerxes flooded Greece with hundreds of thousands of soldiers. The invaders burned Athens and the Parthenon. The Athenians had abandoned their city and fled to the island of Salamis. They were allied with the Spartans.

The oath of the Athenians and Spartans was freedom or death. They would fight their enemies to the last hoplite. Athens had a powerful fleet of triremes, and Sparta an undefeated army.

The Athenian general Themistocles gave the Persian king Xerxes the impression that he preferred the Persians to defeat the Athenians. Themistocles advised Xerxes to send his fleet to Salamis. Xerxes fell into the strategic trap of Themistocles. The numerous large Persian ships had difficulty coordinating and maneuvering in the narrow waters between Salamis and Attica. The Greek triremes sank most of the Persian warships.

The Greek triumph at the Battle of Salamis was the result of virtue, strategy, great daring, bravery, heroism, and love of homeland and freedom.

The general Themistocles was a hero. At the end of the fifth century BCE he earned the praise and respect of the historian Thucydides (Peloponnesian War 1.138.3), and in the second century the philosopher and priest of Apollo Plutarch (Themistocles 17).

The Athenian poet Aeschylus, who fought at Salamis, wrote the play Persians, which the Athenians watched in the Theater of Dionysus in 472 BCE, only eight years after the battle. Aeschylus urges the brave Greek warriors to fight and“to free their homeland, to free their children, their women, the sanctuaries of their ancestral gods, and the tombs of their ancestors. The struggle against the Persians is the highest good and virtue.”“O sons of the Greeks, go forth!

Free your homeland, free your children, your wives,
the shrines of your ancestral gods and the tombs of your forefathers:
now the struggle is for everything.”
(Persians 402–405)

The virtues of the Persians were opposite to those of the Greeks. The Persians did not fight for their homeland; they had no homeland. They were slaves of kings without rights, justice, or freedom. Aeschylus was certain of the Persians’ defeat. Xerxes was an absolute monarch. His values included arrogance, megalomania, and greed. He was a tyrant among tyrants.

The Battle of Salamis and the existence of a monarch like Xerxes remain timeless examples of freedom versus tyranny.

Two thousand five hundred years later, in the second decade of the 21st century, Xerxes still lives and reigns. Meanwhile the homeland of Aeschylus faces new Persians (Mongol Turks) who demand “earth and water,” meaning sovereignty over the Aegean.

Epilogue

The Greece of 2026 is not the Greece of 480 BCE. The Greece of 2026 is the result of dramatic political and cultural catastrophes. It is stripped of its ancient beauty, philosophy, science, the Parthenon, Plato’s Academy, democracy, the Olympic and other Panhellenic games, the Theater of Dionysus, the Oracle of Apollo at Delphi, the Mysteries of Eleusis, the sanctuaries of ancestral gods, and hundreds of temples expressing reverence for the gods and the tombs of ancestors.

What does Greece of 2026 have?

It has a vast foreign (Jewish-Christian) priesthood which for nearly 1,600 years has taught most Greeks to become Jewish Christians, eliminating anything ancient Greek from the country and its education. It has laws, many foreign archaeologists, governments, sciences, and schools that possess foreign ideals. The government serves foreign NATO interests. Thus, Greece in 2026 is superficially Greek but struggles to confront its ancient Greek civilization.

The country never had its own Renaissance in order to return to its own civilization. This must happen as soon as possible. Aeschylus’ phrase “now the struggle is for everything” applies to the struggle for the rebirth of modern Greeks into Greeks who embrace and love their ancient culture. This is the greatest struggle of all.

With such determination, virtue, and courage, transformed Greeks will confront the new Persian Mongol Turks again in a victorious Salamis.

Certainly Europe and America, which became civilized through the Renaissance and Enlightenment inspired by ancient Greek civilization, have also changed radically. They envy the Greeks. They try to convince them that they are not related to the ancient Greeks.

But in reality, Greeks of 2026 have an almost mythical continuity. They are related to the ancient Greeks—from the Bronze Age (3100 BCE), the Minoans and Mycenaeans, the Greeks of the 5th century BCE, the Greeks of the medieval period, and the heroes of the Greek War of Independence of 1821.

These Western Europeans are also Christians. Therefore it will be strategically very difficult for Greeks of 2026 to spiritually travel for long into the world of Homer, Thales, Anaximander, Pythagoras, Aeschylus, Sophocles, Euripides, Aristophanes, Plato, Hippocrates, Aristotle, Theophrastus, Alexander the Great, Archimedes, Euclid, Hipparchus, Ptolemy, and Galen.

But for Greeks to remain Greeks, they must never forget their language and culture. If this effort is made, Christianity and foreign domination will disappear.

  1. So… now your for going back to paganism? This is the second article you have published that calls for the repudiation of Christianity. I remember when you were so pro-Trump and now you are anti-Trump. Now it looks like you want to dump Christ for going back to paganism. You are a double- minded hypocrite

    • First, Helleniscope “worships” and practices Freedo0m of Speech. Second, we have published many times examples of “archaeolatry” from Greece – but it doesn’t mean we follow paganism, Third and final point, Hellenism as a philosophical system preceds Christianity and it is much wider than Christianity. Without the classical and Stoic Hellenic philosophy, without the Ecumenical prinviples put to practice by Alexander the Great (who was holding Aristotle and Plato under his pillow, without the Greek language there will be NO Christianity as we know it. Those of you who want to understand how Christianity came to be, you have to go back and study Hellenic philosophy. The Alexandrian Greek words used in the New Testament are not just “translatable” words and concepts: they have a meaning and a history. Before Apostle Paul was able to say “There is neither Jew nor gentile, slave nor free, male nor female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus” Hellenism had practiced at least 4 centuries of liberating humanistic HELLENISTIC philosophy.

Helleniscope has published recenlty our late friend’s Fr. Georgios Metallinos’ essay on the issue. He was a professor at the Univ. of Athens and a true specialst:

      https://www.helleniscope.com/2025/11/12/christianity-and-hellenism-in-their-encounter-by-fr-georgios-metallinos/

I am not hopeful narrow-minded people who are used to classify everything in little bo0xes like “pagan” and “non pagan” would want to open their eyes…

    • HDJoseph.
I am not taking Nick’s side, to “butter him up”. I had my disagreements with him.

However, you are wrong to blame Nick for Valianato’s editorial. It is a service to the readers of Helleniscope, to access different opinions. I dont agree with Valianato’s opinion that Christianity is the root of Greeks’ decline. But its only an opinion. Instead of calling Nick a hypocrite,— for which I admire him for publishing the epithet—why not collect your thoughts of why you disagree with the article and ask Nick to pubish it. Attempting to put him on the defensive, by calling him a hypocrite, instead of laying out your argument, is an indication of immaturity.

Changing position on politics, as you’re accusing Nick, is admirable. Many pro-Trumpers are realizing that the man they voted for is not the same as the one who is currently president. Most pro-Trumpers hate to admit their naivete, in being taken for a fool. But some brave souls have realized they were taken for fools

  2. Valianatos is wrong to conclude that Christianity has affected Greek thought to such an extent, that somehow, our civilization producing genes have shut down. I can make a list of worship and belief practices of modern Greeks and compare them to ancient ones and you will see very little change in fundamental beliefs and practices. Sure, we now dont consider Zeus as the god head, and we have renamed Poseidon as Saint Nicholas. Athens’ patron saint is no longer the virgin goddess Athena, but the virgin goddess Panagia. Helios is now called Prophet Elias. The dead still go to Hades. The miraculous cures of today, where people would offer a replica of a leg, after they were able to walk, or an eye, after they were cured of blindness, is the same as the votive offerings of miniature body parts in ancient Greece.

Ancient Greeks were not free of superstition. They wouldn’t go to war unless the Pytheia told them it was the right time. The Spartans wouldn’t march to help Athens during thew battle of Marathon because of some festival.

Greeks did not create the world renown civilization because of freedom from religion and superstition, but in spite of it.

How many of us know that the Greeks might not have the impact on the world as we once did, not because we’re held slaves by Christianity, but because Democracy can only be discovered once, in world history. Same as philosophy, science, medicine, athletics, music, the alphabet, politics, debate and the myriad other legacies that Greeks have gifted to the world.
