The Islamic Republic of Iran has confirmed the death of Ali Larijani—one of the most powerful and enduring figures in its modern political history.
For decades, Larijani stood at the center of Iran’s state machinery. Born in 1958 in Najaf, Iraq, into a deeply influential clerical family, he rose through the ranks not as a firebrand, but as a strategist—calculated, disciplined, and deeply embedded within the system of the Islamic Republic.
He first emerged on the national stage as head of Iran’s state broadcasting organization, shaping the Islamic Republic’s official narrative in its formative years. But it was in national security and governance where his influence truly took form.
As Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council, he became one of Tehran’s chief negotiators on the nuclear issue, engaging directly with Western powers during some of the most tense diplomatic standoffs of the early 21st century.
Later, as Speaker of Parliament from 2008 to 2020, Larijani served as a stabilizing force within Iran’s political elite—bridging rival factions, managing internal crises, and reinforcing the authority of the Supreme Leader.
Following the death of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, he re-emerged as a central architect of Iran’s strategic posture—helping guide national security policy during a period of profound uncertainty and escalating conflict.
Now, his death—confirmed by Iranian authorities—marks more than the loss of a single individual.
It signals the removal of a key pillar in Iran’s power structure. However, we should note that Iran has practiced decentralization at levels and, following Ali Khamenei’s example, it is very likely that Larijani has already pre-determined his successor…
