As Easter approaches, concern is growing across Greece over a sacred tradition that has united the nation for generations — the arrival of the Holy Light from Jerusalem.
Every year, on Holy Saturday, the Holy Fire is received at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre and flown to Greece on a special flight, where it is welcomed with honors usually reserved for heads of state. From Athens, it is then distributed across the country, reaching churches and homes just before the Resurrection service at midnight.
But this year, uncertainty surrounds this deeply symbolic ritual.
The Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem remains closed due to ongoing security concerns and regional instability. With access restricted and traditional ceremonies under threat, many in Greece are now asking: will the Holy Light arrive as it always has?
For the faithful, this is not just a logistical issue — it is profoundly spiritual. The Holy Light represents the miracle of the Resurrection, a living connection between Jerusalem and Orthodox believers throughout Greece.
Officials and Church authorities are closely monitoring the situation, exploring possible alternatives. Yet, without access to the holy site, the centuries-old ceremony itself is in question.
Across Greece, from major cities to the smallest islands, anticipation is mixed with anxiety. Churches prepare as they always do — but with a sense of uncertainty that is rare for such a sacred and enduring tradition.
As Holy Week draws near, the nation waits — hoping that despite the challenges, the Holy Light will once again make its journey from Jerusalem to Greece, carrying with it a message of faith, continuity, and hope.

I cannot verify anything about Kalymnos… I know the island fairly well and I would hold back on accepting these news… They came up in the most “opportune” time during Lent and in the midst of a global war and this generates many suspicions…
I heard from the grapevine that the Holy Light stopped appearing to the Patriarch of Jerusalem after the previous Patriarch was illegally removed and the current Patriarch was installed.While it appeared to the previous Patriarch, it stopped appearing to the current Patriarch, but it still appears to the people gathered around the Holy Tomb of Christ and zig zags across the room, automatically lighting their candles. Can Helleniscope find out if this is indeed the case?
I would also like to mention that in the past, the Holy Light split a column by the doors to the Holy Sepulchre to appear to the then Patriarch of Jerusalem and the Orthodox people who had been locked outside by a factious group that was inside the church. It did not appear to those inside at all. That split in the stone with the stain of the Holy Fire is still there, as a testimony to this event.
Having said that, it doesn’t matter what the unbelievers do. If, and that is a big if, the Orthodox Christians who gather at the Holy Sepulchre this Pascha, are deemed worthy by God, even if they are outside the doors, the Holy Light will find a way of appearing to them. The Holy Light has no limitations.
