EDITOR’S NOTE (Nick Stamatakis). I have been calling the Mitsotakis “family” and all the governments led by them a “mafia” operation for the last forty years… And I am happy that the hopeful new Greek leader, Maria Karystianou, does the same… I will never forget my participation in a graduate seminar on “Mediterranean Societies” at Stony Brook in 1993: on that particular day, the discussion focused on “The Rise of the Italian Mafia.” During the discussion after the presentation by one of the participants, I raised my hand and, among other notes, explained that the then Prime Minister of Greece, Constantine Mitsotakis, had at least 6,000 godchildren, mostly on the island of Crete!! The professor’s jaw dropped… After a minute of silence, he managed to explain: “You Greeks have not only discovered ‘democracy’, but also its most efficient demise!…

Maria Karystianou launched a full-scale attack on the political system and European institutions, on the occasion of the parliamentary debate on the rule of law. Ms. Karystianou described the process as “hypocritical,” stressing that Greece has been transformed into a state of lawlessness.
“A state of illegality and injustice”
According to her, responsibility for this situation is shared by both the government and the opposition, while she primarily targeted the European Commission.
“They have turned Greece from the birthplace of democracy into a state of illegality and injustice, and the European Union into an accomplice to corruption. All of them are jointly responsible. The rule of law does not exist in Greece, and the European Commission, which is supposedly its guardian, bears enormous responsibility.” Here is the video (English Subtitles):
Attack over Tempi and wiretapping
Maria Karystianou denounced a “disgraceful regime of criminal immunity” that allows politicians to avoid scrutiny and punishment for felonies against citizens. She targeted both the Mitsotakis and Tsipras governments, accusing them of “whitewashing” the Tempi train disaster.
At the same time, she referred to the illegal surveillance scandal (Predator), noting that it was “whitewashed” in Parliament. She also spoke of ministers who are criminally liable and allegedly involved in embezzlement cases involving hundreds of millions in the OPEKEPE scandal.
“The discussion today is not about the rule of law but about a mafia state. It is a system where politicians are not prosecuted for the crimes they commit against Greek citizens.”

Nick. Sorry. I have to digress from your conclusion on the current prime minister, Mitsotakis. First, you can’t take the opposition’s word as proof. As I understand it, Karystianou is forming her own party. Syriza and PASOK also blame Mitsotakis for the farm subsidy scandal. As we know, the EU is conducting an investigation into the matter. Let’s wait and see what they find out. Since its the EU doing the investigating, we can be pretty sure that it will be untainted.
And one more thing. You, as having Cretan family, know that older politicians were baptizing babies, because in Greece, and Crete in particular, a God parent became part of the family. The hope was that he’ll get the votes fr4om his newly minted family. This is not corruption. And its certainly no more corrupt than politicians going after the Jewish vote, by promising support for Israel. Or Greeks for instance, voting for the politician that promised support for Greece against Turkey. Or a politician shaking hands. That’s retail politics.
Sorry Bob… Mitsotakis the eldest and the younger are the definition of the “Godfather” and Godfather as we all know from the famous movie is the definition of the Mafia… They were involved in a number of crimes from antiquity peddling to narcotics to you name it… Pure Mafia no matter how you slice it. Have you heard the story of the village Zoniana in Rethymnon with the huge cannabis cultures? It was the best in Europe and fetched more money than any other in the Amsterdam market. I could write a book on their “achievements”…
The sad and tragic reality is that the Mitsotakis family, like a few others, is a dynasty where influence is inherited, bureaucracy is weaponized, and scandal after scandal is just background noise concealed and excused by the establishment media whose focus is profit not truth.
