All this would be fine until it was announced that a black actress would play “Helen of Troy” and a transgender actor would play Achilles….Will Greece pay for the distortion of its history?
By Nick Stamatakis
Greece is reportedly preparing to hand Christopher Nolan’s upcoming epic, The Odyssey, more than €6.5 million in state-backed incentives while Greek historical productions continue to struggle for basic support at home.
Under Greece’s film cash rebate program, major international productions can recover a significant percentage of their local spending through taxpayer-funded incentives. Government officials and tourism advocates are celebrating Nolan’s presence in places like Pylos and Messinia as a global promotional opportunity for Greece and a boost to the local economy.
But the decision is already drawing criticism from those who remember that only a few years ago, the Greek historical film Kapodistrias — centered on Ioannis Kapodistrias, the first Governor of modern Greece — reportedly received no meaningful financial backing from the state.
Critics argue that the contrast is hard to ignore: Greece appears eager to subsidize a massive Hollywood production inspired by mythology, while projects focused on modern Greek history and national figures often struggle to secure funding. To many observers, it raises uncomfortable questions about cultural priorities — whether the Greek state values international prestige and foreign productions more than investing in its own filmmakers and historical narratives.
Supporters of the rebate system counter that productions like Nolan’s inject millions into the economy through hotels, local crews, transportation, tourism exposure, and infrastructure spending. Still, opponents say economic arguments should not come at the expense of supporting Greek cinema itself, especially films that attempt to preserve and promote the country’s own historical identity.
All this would be fine until it was announced that a black actress would play “Helen of Troy” and a transgender actor would play Achilles….Will Greece pay for the distortion of its history?
A Huge uproar across the US and the World against Woke “Odyssey”
“The Odyssey” by Nolan has created an uproar with its “woke” choices – totally insulting and disgusting to all human beings, and most of all to us Greeks… The “ultra-liberal” panel of “The View” discussed (video below) the debate, which the liberals are losing decisively.
The panel brings back the debate over the infamous book “Black Athena,” which was lost decades ago, and whose author’s whole story (of the supposed influence of the Hellenic Civilization from Africa) was discredited. Greek philosophers themselves described their trips to Egypt and Babylonia, BUT nobody can suggest that they owe their achievements to these countries they visited…
The panel discusses backlash from conservative commentators over rumored casting choices for Christopher Nolan’s upcoming film adaptation of The Odyssey. Although no casting has been officially confirmed, social media speculation — including rumors that Lupita Nyong’o could portray Helen of Troy and Elliot Page could play Achilles — sparked criticism from figures on outlets like Newsmax and from Elon Musk online.
The hosts push back on the outrage, emphasizing that the casting reports are unverified and questioning why audiences are so upset over fictionalized interpretations of mythological characters.
Throughout the segment, the panel frames the outrage as unnecessary and politically motivated, with Whoopi Goldberg repeatedly suggesting that people who dislike a film’s casting choices can simply choose not to watch it. The discussion ultimately centers on race, representation, historical interpretation, and the recurring culture-war debates surrounding modern Hollywood adaptations.

Boycott this movie. I urge all Greeks not to watch or give your money to see a ‘woke’ film protraying Greeks as Black Africans or Homosexual transgender. Hollyweird is losing money big time. Americans are boycotting the shit and trash comiing out of Hollyweird with all those Pedophiles and Satanists. Greece should not welcome the stars of this shit production on Greek soil.
ANAXIOS! Boycott indeed.
Shameless Greece bowing down to woke pc left subspecies—just like so many orthodox monk elders predicted.
Steve Lincoln. Orthodox monks predicted that there would be Hollywood movies that would have a black actress in the role of Helen?
Nick, Spartacus;
Hellenes and Phil-Hellenes, this is by far the most Gross
Insult on the Heroic Hellenic Civilization. It is not only to distort, revise , history ,but by false cinema, to diminish ,dis-empower Hellenism! How ?By propaganda to promote the ‘Woke
Agenda” from people of color ,to resemble the refugees to enable the Turkish/Ottoman Invaders to be accepted , by blending into the Hellenic Domain by their illegal intrusions into the Aegean Sea! This is a provocation by the the Greek Government to humiliate its own Sovereignty! This is a pretense-a set up,
to compromise UNCLOS and for Turkey to not comply with the 12 Mile Nautical Mile
Limit to protect the Aegean Islands. ALL Greeks- Must protest in Solidarity this summer to raise the 12- Mile Flag limit at the Athens Airport, All Restaurants should have 12-mile specials -Happy Hour 12-Mile
Ouzo 12 , at 12:00PM every Sunday all Churches should ring their Bells 12 Times in Unison throughout Greece and the Diaspora! All Taxis should welcome 40,000,000 million tourists, this year ,by decorative labels of their autos with 12 mile logos. The Greek People should resist this banality and Raise a tumultuous/passionate Protest ,worldwide, in honor of the 12 mile limit as ratified by over 165 nations of the world in respect of International Law of the Sea in order to secure Greek National Sovereignty! The Number 12 must become a National Symbol, top
Priority, a National Holiday, like Oct 28th and March 25th. It is our duty to protest and protect our proud unique inherited civilization to honor our Heroic Patrida’s best Interests!
Way to go, Vassilis. You put Leonidas to shame in your patriotic fervor. A Hollywood movie is part of a conspiracy theory, to erode Hellenism, take over the country and turn us into Turks.
Hellenes Must Stand in Solidarity and Announce loudly to the International Olympic Committee – A Very Loud Announcement. LA Olympic Games 2028-The Olympic Flame from Olympia Greece the Source of the Olympic Games will be DENIED to the Nations that Do Not Ratify To Support The 12 Mile Limit as
Officially Disclosed by UNCLOS- International Law of the Seas. Are you listening USA, Israel, Turkey??
Can anyone be more impressed than the Mitsotaki’s Government by expecting that next 2 movies of significance, will be funded by the NAACP depicting the lives of Martin Luther King and Mohammed Ali, who will be replicated by a WASP look alike Trump a blue eyed actor to play the role!
My hunch is that the Greek government subsidized the Odyssey, while disregarding Kapodistrias for a very simple reason. The Odyssey is a major Hollywood production, that will be viewed all over the world and promote Greece’s tourism, while also familiarizing more people with Greek history. On the other hand, the Kapodistrias film, is meant for a small audience.
Having said that, the fact that Hellen is played by a black actress, while annoying to us, is no big deal to the world audience. People are now accustomed to seeing black people as part of society. Also, the money allocated for the arts, which is how the subsidy is financed, is mostly EU funds, that have to be absorbed, or they’re given back.
To all the super Greeks, such as Tourikis, who says we must deny the Olympic flame, that would be like cutting our nose to spite our face. That dense idea was circulating a while back, because of some other Greek grievance. The Olympic committee squashed that idea
Sorry Bob, but this is direct revision of our history. For centuries Western intellectuals and “historians” have been “questioning” Modern Greek DNA. From Fallmereyer to “Black Athena” they have been proven wrong again and again. Modern DNA studies – 100% pure science – have proven that modern Greek DNA is almost identical to the ancient Greek. In rather remote places like Lasithi, Crete, the percentage approaches 100%!! Therefore a black Helen of Troy is not simply challenging Greek history, it is challenging science. Somebody here put it perfectly: What if we make a movie about Martin Luther King and he assign the role to a white actor? End of story.
I’m not doubting the DNA connection of modern Greeks to the ancients. What I’m saying is the reason for the Greek government to subsidize Christopher Nolan’s movie, instead of Kapodistrias, has to do with how each movie benefits the country. Filming of the Odyssey employed many people. And of course, the beauty of the natural environment, would help tourism. Plus, a country that’s serious about providing subsidies to attract filming, can not interfere with the artistical production and nit pick which actors it prefers.
Kapodistrias is too narrowly confined. Non-Greeks are not going to see it, while the Odyssey is a major production. And Hollywood takes liberties with the plot. If we’re going to pick the whole movie apart, there will be many segments which have no basis on the Homer’s poem. The black actress is not the only one that deviates.
Anxiety of how much connected ancient Greeks are to us, while a point of pride, it also signifies a feeling of inferiority. We can’t force people to connect us to the ancients, whether they want to or not. We have to prove our worth by being like our ancestors. By boycotting whoever we disagree with, we’ll be the losers.
As for a white person taking the role of MLK, no one is going to stop you. Its your investment, your project, you do what you want with it. But consider this: MLK’s picture is available in myriad publications. We know what he looked like. We know he was a black person. No one really knows if Helen even existed, let alone have a picture of her. Homer himself had not seen her. The paintings of her were done thousands of years after she existed. If she ever did.
What are you talking about? Inferiority? Are you OK? Answer the question what would Hollywood and the Black community and the “woke” crowd do if a white man played the role of MLK in a movie… Go ahead – I am waiting!!
I’ve already explained about the difference of MLK and Helen of Troy. Look at my last paragraph. Again, i’m not saying I agree with what Hollywood is doing with Helen. What I’m doing, is I’m explaining the likely cause of why they subsidize the Odyssey and not Kapodistrias. That was the theme of your post, Nick.
Everyone is going off with conspiracy theories of the bad Christopher Nolan, who’s aim is to deny us our patrimony. Give me a break people. You want the world to recognize us as worthy of our ancestors, let’s emulate them.
The bitter fruits of liberalism. Maybe Hellenes of a leftist bent should wake up and smell the coffee.
