Patriarch Theophilos Takes the Cause of Middle Eastern Christians to the White House

In a rare and highly symbolic Oval Office meeting, Patriarch Theophilos III of Jerusalem urged President Donald Trump to defend endangered Christian communities, protect access to Christianity’s holiest shrines, and preserve the Christian presence in the Holy Land. The Patriarch also bestowed upon the President one of the highest honors of the Jerusalem Patriarchate. 

Karloutsos was absent from the meeting, and this can certainly be seen as the end of an era: he wouldn’t be absent under normal circumstances, as the significance of the meeting is very high for Orthodoxy.  Alas, we are at the end of Karloutsos’ career.

One of the most important Orthodox diplomatic events of the year unfolded this week in Washington as Patriarch Theophilos III met with Donald Trump at the White House for an extended discussion focused on the future of Christianity in the Middle East.

The approximately forty-minute meeting took place at a moment of growing uncertainty throughout the region. Christian populations in Syria, Lebanon, the Palestinian territories, and even Jerusalem itself continue to face demographic decline, political instability, security concerns, and increasing pressure on their historic communities. According to statements released by the Patriarchate, Theophilos emphasized the urgent need to protect Christian communities, guarantee freedom of worship, and safeguard access to the holy places that stand at the center of the Christian faith.

The Patriarch reportedly told the President that Christians across the Middle East are asking for something simple but increasingly difficult: the ability to remain in their ancestral homelands, practice their faith freely, and maintain access to their sacred sites. The discussion also touched upon the broader role Christianity plays as a stabilizing force in a region torn by war and geopolitical tensions.

A particularly notable moment came when Theophilos awarded President Trump the Great Bearer of the Cross of the Order of Cross-Bearers of the Holy Sepulchre, one of the highest distinctions bestowed by the Patriarchate of Jerusalem. The decoration is directly connected to the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, the most sacred shrine in Christianity and one of the principal responsibilities entrusted to the Jerusalem Patriarchate.

This was not merely a ceremonial courtesy call.

The Jerusalem Patriarchate is among the oldest institutions in Christianity and serves as custodian of the Church of the Holy Sepulcher, the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem, and numerous other sacred sites throughout the Holy Land. The Patriarch, therefore, functions not only as a religious leader but also as one of the principal defenders of Christianity’s physical presence in the birthplace of the faith.

The timing of the meeting is also significant. Only a few months ago, controversy erupted after restrictions imposed in Jerusalem prevented senior Christian clergy from freely accessing the Church of the Holy Sepulchre during Holy Week, provoking international criticism and concern about access to Christian holy places. The White House itself publicly expressed concern over those developments.

By bringing these issues directly to the Oval Office, Theophilos elevated the plight of Middle Eastern Christians from a regional religious concern to a matter of international diplomacy.

Analysis

Several conclusions emerge from this meeting:

• The Patriarchate of Jerusalem remains one of the most influential Orthodox institutions in global diplomacy. Few Orthodox leaders have direct access to world leaders at this level.
• The protection of Christian communities is returning to the international agenda. After years in which Christians often felt overlooked amid broader Middle Eastern conflicts, the issue is once again receiving attention at the highest levels of government.
• The Holy Land remains a central concern for world Orthodoxy. The survival of ancient Christian communities in Jerusalem, Bethlehem, Syria, and Lebanon is increasingly viewed as a matter of both religious and geopolitical importance.
• The Patriarch’s visit may give Trump some much-needed leverage against the genocidal Zionists who rule Israel right now. Their attacks on Christians in the Holy Land must stop now.
• The Patriarch’s message went beyond religious freedom. His argument was that the disappearance of Christian communities would weaken the cultural and social balance of the entire region, making long-term stability more difficult to achieve.
• Finally, Karloutsos was absent from the meeting, and this can certainly be seen as the end of an era: he wouldn’t be absent under normal circumstances, as the significance of the meeting is very high for Orthodoxy.  Alas, we are at the end of Karloutsos’ career.

Whether tangible policy initiatives emerge from the meeting remains to be seen. Yet the image of the Patriarch of Jerusalem standing in the Oval Office and speaking on behalf of some of the world’s oldest Christian communities serves as a reminder that the struggle for Christianity’s survival in its historic homeland is far from over.
