Yet in New York, St. Nicholas WTC is preparing to honor President Zelensky as a “Beacon of Hope” – a contrast that many in American Orthodoxy will find impossible to ignore..

A dark and increasingly disturbing contradiction is unfolding in the Orthodox world. For years, clergy, monastics and faithful of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UOC) have lived amid church seizures, physical confrontations, government investigations, restrictive legislation and an atmosphere in which an ancient Orthodox body representing millions of believers has been treated as politically suspect. These are not merely accusations circulating in Russian media: international human-rights organizations have raised serious concerns about the treatment of the UOC, Human Rights Watch has warned that Ukraine’s religious legislation could have severe consequences for its parishes and faithful, and United Nations experts have explicitly expressed alarm over reports of persecution and restrictions on religious freedom.
Now another terrible episode has been added to that record.
On August 23, 2026, unidentified attackers descended upon members of the brotherhood of the Holy Dormition Sviatohirsk Lavra, one of the great monastic centers of eastern Ukraine. When the violence ended, Monk Varsonofiy — Varsanufie — Turianskyi, 53, was dead, while Monk Hryhoriy and Andriy Kyriienko had suffered serious stab wounds. According to subsequent reports from the monastery, Varsonofiy was found on the Cyril-and-Methodius stairway, and the forensic death certificate issued the following day recorded a through-and-through gunshot wound to his head and neck, with damage to the bones of the skull, as the cause of death.
A wounded survivor has said that three men wearing military-style clothing and full combat equipment approached him before the attack. His testimony is deeply troubling and obviously demands investigation, but Ukrainian authorities have not publicly identified the killers, established that they belonged to the Armed Forces or any security formation, or announced a motive. That distinction is essential, because the horror of what happened requires no embellishment: an Orthodox monk was murdered inside one of Ukraine’s most revered monastic communities, two other men were gravely wounded, and the killers remain unidentified.
Yet it is impossible to view the tragedy entirely in isolation from the broader climate surrounding the UOC. These events are occurring under the presidency of Volodymyr Zelensky, during whose tenure Ukrainian authorities have pursued measures against the UOC that have repeatedly attracted international scrutiny. That does not make Zelensky personally responsible for the murder at Sviatohirsk, nor is there evidence connecting him to it, but presidents are judged not only by crimes they personally order; they are also judged by the political and legal atmosphere that develops under their governments, particularly when fundamental rights are at stake.
This is what makes the approaching spectacle in New York so jarring.
On September 26, the St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church and National Shrine at the World Trade Center, an institution of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America, intends to present Zelensky with its 2026 Beacon of Hope Award at a lavish dinner at Casa Cipriani. The Shrine’s own promotional announcement praises his “steadfast leadership in defense of freedom and human dignity,” presenting him as a symbol of courage, resilience and hope. Tickets and sponsorship packages rise into extraordinary sums, including a top sponsorship level advertised at $250,000.
One must ask how those words – freedom, human dignity, hope – sound to the monks burying their brother at Sviatohirsk, or to UOC communities that have watched their churches become objects of bitter legal and physical struggle.
The controversy also exposes a deeper uneasiness growing within American Orthodoxy. Orthodox Christians in the United States are not united in their understanding of the Ukrainian ecclesiastical crisis, and jurisdictional divisions that once appeared remote have increasingly entered parish life here. The Orthodox Church in America, for example, continues to recognize Metropolitan Onufriy as a brother primate and has publicly expressed support for him and for the suffering Ukrainian Orthodox Church; as recently as June, Metropolitan Tikhon wrote to him after violence at the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra, expressing “profound sorrow” over attacks upon such sacred places.
Meanwhile, St. Nicholas at Ground Zero — one of the most visible symbols of Greek Orthodoxy in America — is preparing to honor the Ukrainian president in the heart of Manhattan.
All of this unfolds against the enormous geopolitical machinery surrounding the war. Since Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022, the United States has committed tens of billions of dollars in military and other assistance to Ukraine, while the European Union and its member states continue to provide extraordinary levels of financial and military support. By August 2026, the EU reported €220.3 billion in overall support, including tens of billions in military assistance, while a new €90 billion support loan for 2026–27 includes an indicative €60 billion for defense and military purposes. Whatever political arguments are made for those policies, there is little question that Ukraine has become deeply intertwined with Western strategic priorities.
For many American Orthodox Christians, therefore, the St. Nicholas ceremony touches a nerve far deeper than the question of a single dinner. It represents the uncomfortable merging of ecclesiastical prestige, geopolitical power, and an unresolved church conflict in which fellow Orthodox Christians say they have suffered profoundly. The Archons of the Ecumenical Patriarchate regularly invoke religious freedom as one of their defining concerns, yet an American Orthodox institution connected to the same ecclesiastical world is preparing to celebrate a political leader whose government is simultaneously facing international criticism over its treatment of an Orthodox Church.
The uneasiness has already moved beyond private conversations. Orthodox Reflections has organized a petition asking that the Zelensky award be withdrawn, with copies directed to St. Nicholas, GOARCH, the Assembly of Canonical Orthodox Bishops and the Archons; organizers reported more than 1,300 signatures by August 21, and discussion has also arisen about a possible peaceful demonstration in New York should the dinner proceed. Whatever one thinks of the petition’s strongly worded accusations, its existence reflects a real rupture within American Orthodox life that church leaders would be unwise to dismiss.
And while those arguments continue in America, the scene at Sviatohirsk Lavra on August 25 offered a very different image of Orthodoxy.
The body of Monk Varsonofiy was brought back from the morgue and placed in a coffin in the center of the Lavra’s Dormition Cathedral, the same monastery in which he had spent years performing the quiet obediences of monastic life. Before entering the monastery, he had been an educated professional, an engineer; afterward his world became the rhythm of prayer and service, including work in the refectory, among the flowers and in the monastery greenhouse.
The brotherhood gathered around his coffin and chanted the funeral service. There were no diplomatic speeches, gala tables or sponsorship packages, only monks standing before the mystery of death and commending one of their own to God. After the final farewell, they lifted the coffin and carried him outside, burying him behind the altar of the Dormition Cathedral, beside Archimandrite Galaktion and Monk Aristokliy, two members of the Lavra who themselves died during shelling in 2022.
The image is difficult to forget: an Orthodox brotherhood lowering another monk into Ukrainian soil while, thousands of miles away, preparations continue for a September evening at Casa Cipriani honoring Ukraine’s president as a “Beacon of Hope.”
No evidence links Zelensky to Varsonofiy’s murder, and no serious account should pretend otherwise. But neither should the killing be detached from every larger question surrounding religious freedom in Ukraine, especially when international observers themselves have expressed concern about the UOC.
That is the uncomfortable question now hanging over American Orthodoxy: How can Orthodox institutions speak so loudly about religious freedom abroad while appearing unwilling to confront the suffering of Orthodox Christians when doing so becomes politically inconvenient?
At Sviatohirsk, Monk Varsonofiy has already been laid in his grave.
In New York, the banquet is still being prepared.

Zelensky and all Ukrainian government officials and media are complicit on the grounds that they created a climate of hatred against the Church. There are YouTube videos posted by the Union of Orthodox journalists showing Mayors and Police in villages participating in the seizure of Churches. This persecution began long before the war to the time when Constantinople still recognized the canonical Church.
Constantinople is also complicit in this. They have entered into an alliance with an evil government. Zelensky is a fascist and a war criminal. A persecutor of Christians. The St. Nicholas shrine decision to honor him is obscene and blasphemous.
Zelensky and his evil bunch could care less about the death of that poor monk!
I honestly don’t know how Arb Elpidophoros can look in the mirror and not have pangs of conscience. The Archons –maybe–but they’re very mercenary in their outlook.

AS i said before Zelensky is enemy of Christians and other religions, proved by destroying churches and beating up and now killing the priests, how many deaths and crime the man in NYC needs who plans to give award to this criminal from Ukraine? This is crime itself to honor him while he is making his great business from the war and should be lock up

Zelensky’s silence on this murder is quite disturbing. Ukrainians killing Ukrainians doesn’t help anybody. Hopefully a criminal investigation will bring some justice.

I applaud and welcome your public statement.
However, this is only one of a long string of similar murders, and this one just happened to get a bit more media attention than other news stories that were “buried with the bodies”…
Do you really believe that the “Silent One” will order a “fair” criminal investigation? And what about the “silence” from the Patriarchate and GOARCH, or even the US media on this topic (nobody dares risk getting an “egg on face” image)?
And the biggest question…will Zelensky’s “beacon of hope silence” on this matter STILL be rewarded by the Archons and GOARCH leadership?
Markos, there were 3 monks killed and others wounded at the same monastery in 2022 when targeted and heavy Russian shelling directly struck the monastic cells where the monks lived. (Incidentally this was shortly after the UOC declared independence from the Moscow Patriarchate.) Not only was Vladimir Putin silent on the matter, but more disturbingly Patriarch Kirill was silent also. Not even a public peep about it came from either of them.
The Sviatohirsk Lavra is right next to the front line of the war. May God help and protect these courageous monks in their daily struggle and spiritual warfare: “Be sober, be vigilant; because our adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.”
REPLY BY MARKOS: Were you there to witness it was Russians who shelled it in 2022, or is it the same false narrative we heard recently about who “dropped missles” on the Kiev Lavra a few months ago, when in fact the Ukrainians decided to intercept the missles right above the Lavra, (to intentionally cause fragments to drop on the monastery?) even though the missles were going somewhere else?
If your source is Zelensky’s State media for the 2022 incident, everyone is already skeptical about its veracity.
