While London refuses to reunite the Parthenon Sculptures with Athens, it is apparently perfectly willing to pack disputed fragments into crates and send them to Frankfurt, exposing once again the colonial logic hiding behind the polite language of “loans” and “cultural cooperation.”

At times, hypocrisy becomes so complete that it turns into self-parody, and the British Museum has now provided one of them by agreeing to lend Parthenon fragments to Germany for a major exhibition in Frankfurt while continuing to resist their permanent reunification with the monument to which they belong.
Frankfurt’s Liebieghaus Skulpturensammlung has officially announced that its exhibition, “Athena, the Stage is Yours: The Parthenon Puzzle,” running from November 18, 2026, through July 25, 2027, will bring together important loans from the British Museum and other institutions, while Greek reporting has identified two Parthenon fragments held by the British Museum as destined for Frankfurt.
The contradiction could hardly be more revealing, because London has spent decades treating the Sculptures as possessions whose future must be determined by the British Museum, yet when another European institution requests them temporarily, the objects suddenly become perfectly movable, insurable and transportable across international borders.
What Britain can do for Frankfurt, however, it refuses to do permanently for Athens, and the decisive word is “loan,” because lending presupposes ownership. The British Museum’s own policy makes clear that its trustees claim the authority to lend objects from the collection abroad and require borrowers to guarantee their return to London at the end of the loan period.
Greece therefore acted correctly when its Central Archaeological Council unanimously rejected Frankfurt’s request for nine Parthenon fragments from the Acropolis Museum after learning that they were intended to be exhibited alongside disputed fragments coming from London, because participation risked lending symbolic legitimacy to Britain’s claim of possession.
The absurdity is overwhelming: fragments of one Greek monument can travel from London to Frankfurt so that Germany may temporarily reconstruct the Parthenon, while the obvious place for their permanent reunification already exists beneath the Acropolis itself.
This is colonialism in its modern museum costume, wrapped in the soothing vocabulary of “cultural diplomacy,” “international cooperation” and “loans,” while the underlying message remains unchanged: Britain possesses them, Britain decides where they travel, and Britain decides when they return.
The Frankfurt loan exposes the truth with remarkable clarity: the Parthenon Marbles can leave Britain whenever Britain chooses; they simply cannot, according to Britain, leave for good.
That is not cultural diplomacy. It is colonial possession disguised as museum etiquette.

Concerning those marbles, the best phrase to use is “receiving stolen property.”
Yes, return the stolen goods. Also, the Brits need to empty out their mansions and estates as well. A considerable amount of Grecian marbles are scattered about their countryside in private manor home estates. Whether they were purchased or not, who cares, they must be returned to their home of origin immediately! The Germans never cease to amaze me. They are despicable.

The irony is grotesque: Britain “lends” looted Greek patrimony to Germany, a nation with its own monumental history of imperial and wartime plunder. One former imperial power passing another people’s treasures to another while calling it “cultural exchange.” The old imperial club is still passing the spoils around the table.
