PHOTO: The Two Archbishops take to the dance floor at the Enthronement party… Luckily they avoided dancing Tsifteteli… Notably – and appropriately – Nikitas represented Bartholomew at the enthronement, known to be fond of tsifteteli dances and “singing boys” (otherwise known as “yousoufakia”) at the Bosporus shores… (Credit to Exapsalmos.gr for the photos).

So much for the solemnity of an enthronement. According to a very caustic report by exapsalmos.gr – accompanied by the two photos posted here – What was meant to mark a “new beginning” for the Archdiocese of Canada somehow found room for Archbishop Apostolos to take to the dance floor, first with his sister and then with Archbishop Nikitas of Thyateira, who was present not as a private guest but as the representative of the Ecumenical Patriarch. Had Nikitas been there merely representing himself, he could have danced all night — belly dance included, if that was his inclination. But when one carries institutional and patriarchal symbolism on one’s shoulders, a little sense of measure is not an unreasonable expectation. There is a difference between warmth and theatricality, between celebration and spectacle.
An enthronement is not a village fair, a wedding reception, or a family party where everyone is free to indulge the evening’s mood. It is a major ecclesiastical act, one that should convey seriousness, restraint, and a clear awareness of the occasion’s sacred nature. Instead, the sight of two archbishops dancing blurred that line rather efficiently. One almost expected the master of ceremonies to announce the next set. If this is what the much-advertised “restart” looks like in symbolic terms, then perhaps the first thing in need of restarting is the instinct for dignity.

Because in the end, no new era will be judged by speeches, ceremonial splendor, official dinners, photo opportunities, or improvised choreography. It will be judged by transparency, accountability, the quality of appointments, equal treatment, and leadership’s willingness to recognize and correct mistakes. If the new beginning is built with the same old habits — or worse, with the same habits dressed up as renewal — then this will not be a restart at all. It will simply be the old mentality with new faces. And that would be the real fiasco: not the dance itself, but the possibility that the choreography tells us more about the “new era” than all the speeches ever could.

Yes, all the wrong optics for two hierarchs . It would be a different proposition if a married priest took to the dance floor at his daughter’s wedding but this seems more silly (and sissy) for two archbishops , especially in a Western (not Middle Eastern) culture.
God forbid that they celebrated enthronement by visiting an old age home, an orphanage or a hospice.
Stupid is as stupid does.
Somehow, I just can’t imagine Saint Paisios or St. Porphyrios dancing over this + maybe worldliness is why he declined every high ranking offer to be a Hierarch — instead Geronda Paisios chose to stay a humble monk — alone in his cell…
but oh what a monk he was!
And what happened? The whole world beat down his door, for this little frail man — for his blessing, his healing + most of all the divine Metanoia that broke thru them! h
Disgrace!
Do you really think that black Bart will react negatively? Do you really believe that it was out of chance that he sent Nikita to Apostolos enthronement. The duo( trio) will have a long lasting relationship. Trust me AUTOCEPHALY NOW
Autocephaly with who at the helm?
Corruption has permeated the ranks.
Luke-warm, poorly catechised “Orthodox” members of parishes abound, rife with a Protestant / Roman Catholic mindset….
Ignorance of the faith is rampant.
If you make the above organization of clergy and laity “autocephalous”, be careful what you ask for…it could further devolve into a historic Schism….
The solution starts and ends with laity actively participating in the election of bishops, just like the Canons and history of the Orthodox Church stipulate. When the synod of bishops decides to return to the teachings traditions of the Orthodox Fathers of old, everything else will fall in place, and any discussion of “autocephaly” will be moot.
“…there will come a day when the clergy will become like the laity, and the laity like demons…” – St. Kosmas Aitolos
Kyrie Eleison. As Apples Nicolles said. Imagine Saint Nektarios or any of our hierarch Saints acting this way? You shall know them by their fruits, and God help us all. As Geronda Ephraim said we all get the hierarchs we deserve!
I asked my 14 yr old son, what he thinks a bishop should do when he is elected bishop. My son said “venerate the icons”. A 14 yr old demonstrated more wisdom than those two.
