Kentucky businessman and longtime Trump supporter Eric Deters alleges defamation and breach of contract, while Guilfoyle’s attorneys deny wrongdoing and accuse him of owing $150,000.
A growing controversy surrounding Kimberly Guilfoyle, former U.S. Ambassador to Greece, has escalated into a legal battle that could have political and diplomatic repercussions in Washington and Athens.
On October 15, Eric Deters, a Kentucky businessman, former attorney, and longtime supporter of President Donald Trump, filed a lawsuit in Kenton Circuit Court against Guilfoyle, attorneys Jesse Binnall and David Schwartz, and their law firms.
The complaint alleges defamation, false-light invasion of privacy, and breach of contract, with the contractual allegations directed specifically against Guilfoyle. Here he explains himself:
Deters claims Guilfoyle and her representatives falsely portrayed him as a blackmailer, challenged the authenticity of his private communications, and publicly asserted that he owed her money.
The controversy follows The Wall Street Journal’s reporting of an alleged request by Guilfoyle for $100,000 to cover an American Express bill. Deters maintains that the request was inappropriate and related to their political relationship.
Guilfoyle’s attorneys present a sharply different account. They contend that Deters actually owes approximately $150,000 for speeches and consulting services performed during 2024 and early 2025. They deny his allegations and characterize his conduct as an attempt to avoid legitimate financial obligations.

A mysterious recording from Greece
Perhaps the most sensational development is Deters’ announcement that he intends to release a 16-minute telephone recording connected to Greece on October 16.
He claims the recording contains damaging information about Guilfoyle and potentially embarrassing revelations involving prominent members of the Trump administration.
Deters has also suggested that his lawsuit could lead to subpoenas involving Donald Trump Jr. and other politically influential individuals.
However, neither the recording’s contents nor its authenticity has been independently verified. No evidence currently establishes wrongdoing by the administration officials Deters has mentioned.
The overlooked connection: 580 medical patients
The lawsuit also involves Deters’ campaign on behalf of approximately 580 patients associated with disgraced spine surgeon Dr. Abubakar Atiq Durrani.
Deters alleges Guilfoyle promised to help him obtain political intervention and justice for the patients, potentially in exchange for a $1 million arrangement. Whether any enforceable agreement existed remains disputed.
In his accompanying press materials, Deters calls for federal investigations and renewed efforts to secure Durrani’s extradition from Pakistan.
Why Greece should be concerned
The controversy raises broader questions about political access, private financial relationships, and accountability within American diplomacy.
For Greece, a strategic U.S. partner in energy security, defense, and Eastern Mediterranean affairs, any credible allegation that personal financial interests intersected with official diplomatic responsibilities deserves examination.
Helleniscope’s assessment: The lawsuit establishes a formal legal dispute, not proof of misconduct. The decisive developments will be whether Deters releases the promised recording, whether it can be authenticated, and what additional evidence emerges through litigation.
Until then, the controversy remains a serious confrontation between competing accounts—one with potentially important implications for American political credibility and U.S.-Greek relations.
