Helleniscope has made many references to the history of Hellenism in the Black Sea – a history that is lost in the mythical times of the Argonauts and the Golden Fleece. This is the place where the first wave of Hellenic Colonization started more than 1,000 years BC – to expand in the centuries after all over the Mediterranean and particularly in Italy (Napoli and south esp. Sicily), Libya (Cerynaica), Egypt and Palestine, South of France (Marseilles, Nice, etc) and Spain (south of Barcelona).
In the Black Sea, the Ancient “Tauris,” known today as Crimea, was where the Russians were converted to Christianity ten centuries ago and Hellenized like no other nation on earth.
In the video below, today’s Russia expresses its gratitude to Hellenism by building a vast archaeological site in Crimea where museums and churches come together with multiple archeological sites that show the constant ebb and flow between Hellenism and Russia in this area, which continues to this day. Tens of thousands of Greeks live in Crimea and Donbas, totally abandoned by the Greek government (not to mention the “Ecumenical” Patriarchate). The construction of this site continued despite the war, which shows the commitment of the Russian leadership and the depth of their gratitude.
The Germans owe the same and more to Hellenism as a measure of comparison. Byzantine princess Theophano married German King Otto II at about the same time (970-980 AD) and because of her, the Germans and the West learned so much: from the existence of the fork (up until this time, they were using …their hands), they started writing their language (using ancient Greek grammar and syntax – it is called “Hoch Deutsch,” “High German”, and is the academic language today!!), they adopted the Roman / Byzantine legal system, they learned about art and letters, etc… Yet, instead of showing ANY gratitude they have destroyed Greece several times since then, the latest was during World War II and recently with the financial crisis…
