Many reactions have been provoked in the foreground and – mainly – in the background, by the recent statements of Giorgos Gerapetritis who argued last Thursday to SKAI that ” the inaction and inaction in the Cyprus issue , the lack of political bravery has unfortunately led Turkey to more extreme positions ” .

• The interview of the Greek Foreign Minister (1/8/2024):

After the renowned professor Ioannis Mazis , who saw off the Greek Minister of Foreign Affairs for this statement , it was the turn of the experienced political analyst, lawyer, journalist and PhD in international relations and European studies, Giannos Charalambidis .

Speaking to the Cypriot Sigmalive, the reputable analyst launched a tirade against Mr. Gerapetritis, while also conveying information from the Cypriot Government , which, as he said, ” is not open to dispute “, that there is a great deal of discomfort in Nicosia due to the statements of the Greek Foreign Minister about ” a lack of policy of bravery .’

In fact, he commented that a bold move on the part of Nikos Christodoulidis would be to request the immediate resignation of Mr. Gerapetritis for ” insulting the Greeks of Cyprus and himself “!

” How does the President of the Republic of Cyprus accept that the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Greece publicly insults him? ” also asked the experienced analyst, who put on the carpet the scenarios for the development of the Cypriot , which are not only auspicious, with the reduction policy of bowings currently followed by Giorgos Gerapetritis and Maximou .

As Yannos Charalambidis characteristically commented, Nikos Christodoulidis is on the wrong path and ” sooner or later he will either clash with Athens, or he will submit to Athens, which under the existing conditions adopts the Turkish positions, gives amnesty to Ankara “!

According to the political analyst, Athens ” in the end will burden the Cypriot President with the following: or you will accept, he will tell him, the solution we are telling you, that is, a disguised solution of the two states, with which he will be enriched as Mr. Gerapetritis says the new initiative? What’s new? The new elements will be the squaring of the circle , i.e. the disguised equal sovereignty and the two states. So he will say to the President, either you will accept partition and sign it, or we will abandon you completely and Cyprus will go into partition again .’

At the same time, it became known that the Cypriot President was accepting a UN proposal for a tripartite meeting (with Guterres and Tatar) in New York on August 13…

• The analysis and information of Yannos Charalambidis:

Nicosia is deeply disturbed by Gerapetritis’s statements because the fire for the “lack of bravery” is in fact directed, firstly at the Cypriot people who rejected the Annan plan, this is the first interpretation of Nicosia and secondly, they are directed at its President himself Republic and to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, because they were in Crans-Montana.

If bravery was not shown, bravery was not shown in Crans-Montana and in the case of the Annan project. We could say the following to Mr. Gerapetritis: That the logic of the two states and the Turkish position of the two states is not the result of a lack of ‘bravery’ but is the result of the policy suggested by Mr. Gerapetritis. That is, of the two equal constituent states with political equality that led Turkey to the two states with equal sovereignty.

And we remind Mr. Gerapetritis who is also a university professor, an Oxford graduate, right? So he has no right to be ignorant of his political and historical responsibilities, that equal sovereignty was established since 1974 by Ecevit. The political equality it advocates was previously established by all Turkish governments. So it’s nothing new. In other words, what Mr. Gerapetritis supports, political equality, as well as Nicosia, the two constituent states, were Turkish positions.

So the bravery of Mr. Gerapetritis is reflected in his bows to the Turkish President? Is this bravery? That is to bow to the Turkish President with bravery? What does Mr. Gerapetritis tell us? He tells us, either we will sell you, or better, so as not to fight, you will sell yourself.

My position on Mr. Gerapetritis is as follows: Since it is so easy for him to give a solution to the Cyprus problem, instead of giving territories of the Republic of Cyprus under Turkish administration, under Turkish Cypriot administration and anything in the context of a federation or confederation, if he dares let’s give two islands of the Aegean or Piraeus, where Mr. Gerapetritis grew up. Why; Because we did not lose the 1974 war alone. We lost him together with Greece. It is easy for Mr. Gerapetritis, after bowing to the Turkish President, to tell us about bravery.

Now it is revealed what the President (s.s. Nikos Christodoulidis) means that bold moves are needed. Is it the bravery of Mr. Gerapetritis? That is, not to correct the error of Crans Montana or the Annan Plan? And Mr. President will have to answer. Again, in our opinion, a bold move can be requested by Mr. President: the immediate resignation of Mr. Gerapetritis for insulting the Greeks of Cyprus and himself. How does the President of the Republic of Cyprus accept that the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Greece publicly insults him? This is not a difference, it is a gross insult.

Therefore any recommendation to the President of the Republic of Cyprus is as follows: That he is on the wrong path, sooner or later he will either clash with Athens, or submit to Athens, which under the existing conditions adopts the Turkish positions, gives amnesty to Ankara and in the end will burden the Cypriot President with the following: or will you accept, he will tell him, the solution we are telling you, that is, a disguised two-state solution, with what will the new initiative be enriched, as Mr. Gerapetritis says? What’s new? The new elements will be the squaring of the circle, i.e. the disguised equal sovereignty and the two states. So he will say to the President, either you will accept partition and sign it, or we will abandon you completely and Cyprus will go into partition again.

So the President has entered an impasse which is now being released with a bold statement, first, the resignation of Gerapetritis and after the resignation of Gerapetritis to call for elections in both Cyprus and Greece in order to determine what form of solution we want and to go to the United Nations and the EU and ask for the following: What the President said and what the Greek Prime Minister said, liberation. Because liberation means the restoration of the legal order violated by Turkey, i.e. the Republic of Cyprus and not the legalization of the acts of invasion between two states that will coexist in the context of a confederation or anything else.

So this is the bold decision that the President will have to take and the consequences as we have said, namely the resignation of Mr Gerapetritis” .

We should note, however, that late on Saturday night it became known that Nikos Christodoulidis accepted a UN proposal for a meeting in New York on August 13 , with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and the occupying leader Ersin Tatar …

“A few days ago, as a result of our own persistent efforts, both to the UN Secretary General and to the EU, always, yes, in cooperation with the Greek government, I have been scouted by the UN to participate in August, in a specific date, on August 13 in a tripartite meeting with the UN Secretary General in New York with the aim of resuming talks. My response was of course positive and I hope – we have not been informed so far – that there will be the same response from the Turkish side and that the holding of the meeting will lead to positive results which cannot be other than the resumption of talks .
