EDITOR’S NOTE (Nick Stamatakis).  From the times of Greek engineer Paul Santorini (link here for his biography who created in the 1930s the prototype of a centimetric radar system, which the Greek Government offered to the British to help them fight the German Air attacks of 1939-40, Greece was proven to have among the brightest inventors of modern technology… Yes, it goes back to antiquity and 3,000 years of science.  But it was also part of our everyday life: We call it “the Greek patent”. This means that when faced with a technological problem, we use any materials and any knowledge available to find a technological solution.  This second part has, I believe, to do with thousands of years of maritime tradition: when you are out at sea, you have to solve the problem at hand with the materials and tools available to you. Which means you have to use your brain and innovate.

Many times since World War II Greek engineers have come up with wonderful inventions, especially in defense technology. We are hoping that this time, this seemingly effective “MINOTAUR” anti-drone laser system, will be put to good use, to defend Greece and make money for its owners and the company’s employees.

The laser superweapon has a Greek signature: Through directed energy, it can shoot down a drone and, indeed, at a great distance.

“The laser beam of Soukos Robot’s Anti-Drone system develops very high temperatures as a result of which it enters and ignites”, says journalist Vassilis Sarimbalidis in Newsauto, referring to the March-April 2024 tests.

The specific Anti-Drone system on a wheeled vehicle launches a laser beam, which creates an ionization cloud, resulting in what enters it being “fried” in the literal sense.

It is a program that has five years of development behind it and according to its creator, it already has operational capabilities. It concerns a modern energy weapon, of the High Energy Laser Weapon category, which through directed energy can “blind” or even shoot down a drone and indeed at a long distance. And all this in very short times, less than 4 seconds from the moment they are detected. It can also simply lead to the destruction of their electronic systems and the loss of control by their operators.

Soukos Robots’ system can be mounted on a vehicle or fixed on the ground, and features a 300 kW power head as well as a hybrid electromagnetic pulse system. There is also a second version, with a 100 kW laser on a towed platform.

The creator of the specific defense systems claims that their range is particularly long (it can reach up to 75,000 feet) and can easily meet the defense needs of our islands.

The advantages of such a system are many. They are fast to target, highly accurate, can vary the beam power depending on the target, have a low cost per shot and are easy to move and set up in various places on an island.

Soukos Robots’ system program is progressing rapidly, and has already been tested for use against tanks with excellent results. In fact, if the plans for a greater power of the order of 1 MW go even further, then not only its piercing capacity but also its range will increase.

Greece, which is not a country where companies of this level are developed for many and varied reasons, we hope to become, especially now that the Turks are threatening us, a self-sufficient nation in critical cutting-edge technology in aerial drones, which they will play a key role in all future military conflicts.
