Hundreds of thousands of Greeks flooded Syntagma Square in a massive protest rally over the tragedy in Tempi, where a horrific train accident left dozens dead and injured. Citizens, filled with anger and grief, demand justice, transparency, and accountability from those responsible. Εκατοντάδες χιλιάδες Eλληνες κατέκλυσαν το Σύνταγμα σε μια τεράστια συγκέντρωση διαμαρτυρίας για την τραγωδία στα Τέμπη, όπου ένα φρικτό σιδηροδρομικό δυστύχημα άφησε δεκάδες νεκρούς και τραυματίες. Οι πολίτες, γεμάτοι οργή και θλίψη, απαιτούν δικαιοσύνη, διαφάνεια και την ανάληψη ευθυνών από τους αρμόδιους. Η λαϊκή αγανάκτηση φούντωσε μετά από αποκαλύψεις για χρόνια προβλήματα στις υποδομές, τις ελλείψεις στα συστήματα ασφαλείας και την αμέλεια που φαίνεται να έχει συμβάλει στη μοιραία σύγκρουση.
Η προσέλευση στις διαδηλώσεις ξεπέρασε κάθε προσδοκία, με τη συμμετοχή να περιλαμβάνει ανθρώπους από κάθε ηλικία και κοινωνική τάξη. We pray for the citizens of Greece and all neighboring countries worldwide to remain courageously strong, determined, undivided and committed to standing tall and firm against the global corruption being propagated against us all while exposing and rooting out the injustices within ruling governments everywhere demanding accountability, action and governmental changes in leadership.
There is no doubt that the accident happened because Of the bad attitude of the railroad staff. They claim that they had demanded for an updated system to bypass human error, which was in storage but never installed. I’m sure there is enough blame to go around. The tragedy of Greece is that the people have no confidence that the government is on their side and not on the side of the corrupt.
There have been tragedies in Greece, such as the floods in Mantra, the fires in Mati that killed over 100 people and of course the accident at Tempi. The fact is accidents and natural disasters are a part of life. Is Greece an outlier in the EU, as far as the amount of lives lost due to accidents, if adjusted for population, including the 36 million tourists that visit Greece?
Would the protests influence the state to be proactive? It takes decades for the attitude of the responsible people to change. We all have seen an icon or a cross in busses or taxis while traveling in Greece. Most Greeks believed that if they did their cross, they would be protected. But there’s a need to do more than pray, to avoid such terrible accidents.
Trying to always be a spirit of dissent is not the right policy here, Bob… Arguing for the sake of arguing does NOT help…

Actually, this is one of the few times that I don’t disagree with you. I just analyze the Greeks’ penchant for demonstrations. And you know that’s true.
Yes. I heard of the explosion. The collision was not deliberate. It was due to poor oversight and the ochadelfismos of the Greeks. When you’re saying it was not an accident, are you saying it was planned? What would have been the benefit if that’s true.
Its easy to place blame on Mitsotakis. Corruption is endemic in Greece. No prime minister can uproot it. It takes generations. Look at the corruption here, where people receive a living wage. In Greece none gets paid enough to live on. Maybe if you or I were in their position we would be just as corrupt. Because circumstences force you to.
Mitsotakis leads the most corrupt family in Greece. He is the personification of corruption and of everything else that comes with it. I have roots in Crete and I know that – when out of power – his family was even involved in drugs.

2 Summers ago, on a summer day in June, 47% of the country decided not to vote, allowing Mitsotakis to convert ~21% of the eligible voting block who cast a ballot for him into a ~42% result that gave him the “Parliamentary Bonus” (another “legal travesty” in the Greek political landscape) of +50 automatic Parliamentary votes so he could form another majority government…
The unanswered question today is, how many of those who showed up at the demonstration among the ones that preferred the beach and the cafes on election day 19 months ago?
