The policy and practices of the Mitsotakis government , such as the photoshoot of a political star of the New Democracy party for €7,000 and the political tolerance of the actions of domestic and foreign criminal organizations, raise many questions about the similarities between the state and criminal organizations, given that the common denominator of both is coercive enforcement. The state acts through laws, courts and prisons, the mafia through direct violence, extortion, threats, murders .
The state legally has a monopoly on “legal violence”, the mafia exercises “illegal” violence to consolidate its power. The state demands taxes, confiscates houses and property, the mafia extorts money. The state promises protection from external and internal dangers . The mafia offers protection from other criminal organizations. Both schemes are based on structured networks of influence, favoritism and hierarchy. Both, mafia and state structure, aim for economic benefit at the expense of those who do not belong to the structured schemes of violence. The majority of the state’s taxes go to clientelism through a complex scheme of entanglement. The mafia’s money stays and is shared within the organization .
The fundamental question behind the two hierarchical and structured power structures is the following: what differentiates a legitimate authority, such as the Mitsotakis government, from a criminal organization, when the methods of enforcement are identical? Objectively, we can point out with certainty that politicians exercise power through the process that is theoretically legitimized by the will of the people, that is, through elections. Functionally, however, when someone investigates the power structure in depth, they find factional interests, clientelism, political blackmail, lobbying, propaganda . Consequently, the party structure resembles the way a criminal organization operates with a structured hierarchy, distribution of responsibilities and the goal of maintaining and expanding power. Their means are buy-off, intimidation, and the exclusion of opponents.
Therefore, if a party wins the elections, exercises power for its own benefit and robs citizens of their taxes, yes, then the party can be considered a criminal organization that gained power and the right to violence “legally” through the electoral mechanism. Parties in this case resemble gangs that fight for possession of the “machine of violence”, that is, the state. Therefore, politicians, when they operate with their personal interest in mind, turn the state into a criminal organization. What has never been understood in Greece is that voting is not a contract of morality and democracy.
“Legitimacy” through elections does not automatically equate to morality and justice . The course of the political path from the ideal case to the criminal organization is common. Initially, it imposes the image of the “most suitable”, followed by electoral victory, the seizure of power, the first temptations (privileges, influence, structure), the entanglement with economic centers, the transformation into a regime with laws that protect them, the spread of social fear, crime, economic benefits and privileges through taxes (e.g., primary surplus).
In Greece, Mitsotakis thrives because there are no citizens who question, who take power, its symbols and stereotypes for granted, who do not look the truth in the face, who do not have the strength to dare to be different, who do not own the fire of thought, who do not own the silence of conscience for the crime of the Tempi , who speak vulgarly to the mothers who are being killed. Despite their numerous flaws, Athens considers its “Patriot” air defense systems critical for the multi-layered national defense strategy, meaning that undermining this would effectively be tantamount to high treason.
And indeed, as Greece is faced with mounting pressure on its maritime borders, particularly its EEZs (exclusive economic zones) in the Aegean and Mediterranean, it needs every bit of air and/or missile defense assets it can possibly acquire, regardless of whether they’re Russian, EU/NATO or US-sourced.
