“THE GREEK BATTALION” (122nd infantry) in Camp Carson, Colorado, USA!
During Memorial Day we commemorate the many men and women who have died while in the military service. Some of the fallen U.S. Army soldiers we honor were members of the 122nd Infantry Battalion, “the Greek Battalion”. This unit of Greek Americans and Greek nationals was founded in January 1943 by President Franklin D. Roosevelt. The unit was named the 122nd Infantry Battalion to mark 122 years of Greek independence following 400 years of Ottoman rule.
The Greek Battalion was stationed at Camp Carson near Colorado Springs, in in the foothills of the Cheyenne Mountains. When they passed with in review before President Roosevelt and General George C. Marshall, they marched behind the Greek and American flags. It was the FIRST AND ONLY time a foreign flag was allowed to fly next to the American flag leading a United States Armed Forces group on American soil.
This all-volunteer unit was composed of a mix of Greek Americans and Greek nationals soldiers, many of whom were not yet American citizens. They were under the superb leadership of Major Peter D. Clainos, the first Greek-born West Point graduate. Military officers advised the battalion that they were seeking volunteers for a covert, hazardous mission, and that the casualty rate was expected to be very high. According to Major Clainos, all of the battalion volunteered. Initially he asked for 15 volunteers, but after the battalion was reviewed they revised the number to 200.
Eventually, most of the “Greek Battalion” members were transferred to infantry units that fought in both the European and Pacific Theaters. One hundred-sixty members of the Battalion volunteered for a small elite commando group that fought with the Greek Resistance in Greece as members of the Greek/US Operational Group, Office of Strategic Services (OSS). They fought behind enemy lines in Greece and the Balkans despite the 95% estimated casualty rate for their mission.
In 1944, the Greek/US Operational Group infiltrated Greece by boat or parachute, and joined forces with Greek Resistance fighters (Antartes). With support from British forces and the Antartes, the OSS commandos disrupted the German withdrawal from Greece by destroying bridges, convoys, trucks, trains and railroad tracks, which aided the Allies.
Continuing a Hellenic tradition of courage, the valiant members of the Greek/US Operational Group contributed to the WW II Allied victory in Europe and to the liberation of Greece.
We Honor Their Service! ❤️🙏❤️

  1. Every year the supposedly Greek-American patriots of AHEPA are celebrating the Memorial Day and honor the Americans who died in various wars fighting for the US.

But they never honor the Greeks who died fighting for Greece and allies! During World War II Greece had huge casualties. There are still thousands of unidentified Greek soldiers buried in the mountains of Albania and nobody cares! The Greek government doesn’t care and AHEPA that grew fast also in Greece doesn’t care!

Laying flowers in Arlington cemetery is more convenient…

  2. You would’ve been better off, not mentioning to us who the Colorado Greek boys helped during World War II .as we know you’re lovely “Andartes” unleashed hell after World War II and caused Civil War in Greece ,thank God they were eventually defeated.

    • It was the Antartes (“Rebels / resistance fighters) who created the most glorious Resistance in the whole of Europe 1941-44. And they were not Leftists or Rightists, they were unified Greeks against Nazism… Later on after the war foreign interests divided the Greeks as they usually do. During World War II the US had barely 1,000,000 victims – and this includes those who died of some non war-related causes – while Greece with 7.5 million population had a total 800,000 casualties directly related to the war!!! Or should I remind you that after the War the US “sanctified” all kinds of Nazis – not only Werner von Braun and his hundreds of Nazi scientists- but many more who established the CIA and other military and state agencies. But you are too ignorant to know the real history… and too foolishly “proud” to open your eyes and face the truth.

Do I “dare” hypothesize that these Nazis who were accepted and given jobs and “sanctified” in America are the same people who sowed the seeds for the authoritarianism that emerges out of the Deep State operations?

But of course you would not hesitate to drop your trolling stupidity here. Get it in your head – Helleniscope is not the place to sell your b.s… because you will be ridiculed… Go post your comments elsewhere!…
