Israel Hit Hard By Hypersonic Missiles – Iron Dome Failed

If there is any strategic conclusion to be drawn from the first days of the Israel war with Iran, the most important is undoubtedly not the failures of Iranian intelligence – this was well known already from previous attacks – but the failure of Israeli (and Western) air defenses against hypersonic missiles, like the ones fired by Iran. Israel’s well-advertised Iron Dome (Greece already bought a part of it), has failed miserably, and parts of Tel Aviv and Haifa were leveled. This will have a significant effect on the decisions President Trump and the Europeans will have to make.  Germany already announced yesterday that it will not allow Ukraine to use its Taurus missiles.  And I am sure President Trump took notice: just a few weeks ago, he was forced to pull out an American aircraft carrier from the Middle East for fear of Houthi missiles.  The possible sinking of any American warship by such missiles would be the ultimate disaster for the US, causing, among other effects, the end of the US Dollar as a reserve currency…

Why the Iron Dome Failed?

The Iron Dome is highly effective at intercepting short-range rockets and artillery shells, but it is not designed to counter hypersonic missiles—and that’s a critical limitation.

 Why Iron Dome can’t stop hypersonic missiles:

1. Speed

• Hypersonic missiles travel at Mach 5+ (over 6,100 km/h or 3,800 mph).

• Iron Dome interceptors (Tamir missiles) are not fast enough to reliably intercept such high-velocity threats.

2. Flight Path & Maneuverability

• Hypersonic missiles often follow low, unpredictable trajectories, unlike traditional ballistic missiles.

• This makes trajectory prediction and interception timing extremely difficult.

• Iron Dome relies on quick, predictive interception—optimized for slower, more predictable targets like Qassam rockets or Katyushas.

3. Design Scope

• Iron Dome was built to defend against short-range threats, mostly from non-state actors like Hamas or Hezbollah.

• It was never intended for advanced state-level threats like hypersonic glide vehicles (HGVs) or hypersonic cruise missiles.

Israel’s options against hypersonic missiles:

• Arrow-3 and Arrow-4: Designed for long-range, high-altitude threats, including ICBMs, but still may struggle with maneuvering hypersonics.

• David’s Sling: Meant for medium-range missiles—less likely to be effective against hypersonics.

• Iron Beam (laser system): In development—potentially useful against drones and some rockets, but not hypersonics (yet).

• U.S. and Allied Cooperation: Israel may require help from future U.S. hypersonic defense programs, like Glide Phase Interceptor (GPI).

Conclusion

Iron Dome is not equipped for hypersonic defense.
