Similar articles have been published in other news media – the ones controlled by the “Embassy” – under the cover of promoting the energy interests of the West and/or of Israel or under other faulty justifications. These arguments are not new: the standard policy emanating from the State Department regarding the EEZ dispute with Turkey has been calling for an “equitable distribution.”  However, the U.S. never applied this perverted principle in its delineation with Cuba and the Bahamas. And when it comes to the South China Sea, the State Department always rejects the expansionist China policies against “island” or “archipelagic” countries such as Taiwan or the Philippines. BUT when it comes to Turkish expansionism and the violation of international laws, the State Department invokes the “equitable” theory. What if some countries supported an “equitable” Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) for China? Why the double standards?

It is time for our community, and especially the so-called “Greek-Americans for Trump,” and all our organizations, to approach Rich Grenell, who was everywhere before the elections, and explain to him the above basic facts.  The Greek community should oppose these sick ideas loudly.

It’s also time to test the Archbishop.  If he wants to be an “Ethnarch” as he claimed, he should detach himself from any “official” positions regarding “equitable distribution” emanating from Athens or DC and come out in support of the International Law of the Seas, the only one approved by the United Nations.  If he does not, then he would be rightfully seen as a pawn of political interests and especially as a promoter of Erdogan’s expansionist plans against Greece and Cyprus.

While Turkey continues its illegal actions against Greece, violating International Law and questioning our sovereign rights, Washington is attempting to impose a “dialogue” with the most unsuitable person as mediator: Richard Grenell.

This is Donald Trump’s envoy , who, according to the revealing front page of Estia and information from newsbreak.gr, maintains business interests in Turkey, has a close and long-standing relationship with the current Foreign Minister of Turkey, Hakan Fidan , from the time when he led MIT, and most worryingly, is allegedly being blackmailed even on a personal level.

The involvement of LGBTQI Richard Grenell in the Greek-Turkish context is not accidental, nor is it isolated. It is part of a broader geopolitical strategy, in which the US, and mainly Washington circles, are trying to “upgrade” Turkey’s role in the Middle East and the Eastern Mediterranean, presenting it as a “regulator,” a supposedly stabilizing factor.

It is clear that anyone who accepts Grenell’s role as a mediator is committing an act of national inferiority. This “special envoy”, who appears unofficially to be working on a proposal for bilateral dialogue between Greece and Turkey , can be nothing more than a tool serving Turkish revisionism.

The timing is critical: after the Israel-Iran escalation and the rearrangement of the balances in the Middle East, the US seems to be investing in a “new Turkey”, more functional for its own plans, even at the expense of its stable allies, such as Greece.

Because what else does the secret American initiative, like the one revealed by Estia, serve when:

• Isn’t it explicitly based on the Law of the Sea?
• Doesn’t it include commitments to respect the rules of international law?
• Is it happening at a time when Turkey appears militarily and geopolitically strengthened?

When Grenell himself has already moved behind the scenes with the US ambassador to Ankara, Fidan, and the next ambassador to Athens, the plan smacks of a dangerous “arrangement.”

What settlement? The one that will wash away Turkish illegalities and be presented as a “solution,” with Greece screeching against the wall. With a “international arbitration” on demand, outside the framework of international law and without institutional guarantees.

Grenell grows where he is not sown. And Greece must make it clear: It does not bargain national sovereignty with third-rate intermediaries, who serve foreign, and perhaps suspicious, interests.
