Senior hierarchs were present, including Metropolitan of Mexico Iakovos, the family, who stood close, and the language was pastoral. But the real story lies not in the ordination itself—it lies in the placement and in what Michael’s father said next.
Alexander Karloutsos publicly explained the decision:
“As the Metropolis of Mexico is now being revitalized, he will remain close to him to do whatever he can… He will not become a priest; he will remain a deacon.”
For critics, this statement is not reassurance—it is disclosure.
“Revitalization” and Why the Deaconate Matters
In church bureaucracy, revitalization rarely means parish growth alone. It often signals money, restructuring, and renewed attention from Constantinople. Mexico, with low density, limited scrutiny, and proximity to U.S. resources, fits that profile perfectly.
The insistence that Michael will remain a deacon is the key detail. Priests are parish-bound and accountable. Deacons—especially permanent, bishop-attached ones—are mobile, flexible, and structurally unanchored. Critics argue this role is ideal not for pastoral care, but for proximity to power, administration, and “help in other areas of the mission.” In short: this is not a limitation; it is a design.
Others commented that he might end up as the Metropolitan of Panama, a country with great wealth, a flourishing Greek community and countless ways to make and hide money – including the not so hidden affairs of the Greek shipping business…

The Karloutsos name arrives with heavy baggage. For years, Helleniscope has published numerous articles about Father Karloutsos, the “Prince of Darkness”, a power broker entangled in political access, donor manipulation, and ethically questionable dealings. Within that narrative, Michael Karloutsos is not an outsider. He was raised alongside power, watching how influence, money, and institutional protection function at the Church’s highest levels. He is part of the flawed system that still rules the Greek Orthodox Church.

Michael’s own past has intensified scrutiny. Commentary, numerous Helleniscope articles, linking him to controversial investments and politically sensitive networks, paint a picture of repeated proximity to scandals and legal disputes in the U.S.
That history makes his relocation to Mexico—and the broader Latin American corridor that includes Panama—look less pastoral and more strategic.

Nearby Panama—with its shipping wealth, canal money, and history of ecclesiastical controversy—only sharpens suspicions that this is about access and flexibility. Evangelization is a distant thought in their corrupt minds.
The Bottom Line
Michael Karloutsos’ ordination is not controversial.
His placement, his role, his family access, and the language used to justify it are.
To critics, this is not mission—it is redeployment.
Not renewal—but repositioning.
And seen through that lens, the move south looks less like a calling and more like the next calculated step in a long, familiar playbook.

Look, if you want to hide, scheme , fiddle with money, duck any accountability or legal judgments-and do so secretively-Panama and Mexico are your preferred destinations and are only 2-3 hours from Miami by air. Time zones are favorable too!
Another thought: The clowns that run our church may be reading the tea leaves and are thinking that they are needing a safe haven to “get out of Dodge “ quickly , as events dictate .
I mean Maduro, the Ayatollah, the Castro successor, they are heading for the exits. Our “leaders” might be reading the greens even though they’ve never swung a golf club.
The Dn.is a perfect and trusted program manager for this endeavor which will need villas, numeric bank accounts, “fellowship” arrangements, oh and lots of cash. Let’s see how this unfolds.

It’s a mockery, a true scandal! The church canons prescribe the qualifications of a deacon, and Fredo just ain’t it!
St. Paul instructs that a deacon must be pious and not greedy, nor driven by dishonest gain. He must be dignified, honest, have a moral conscience, no scandalous behavior, and must enjoy a good reputation in his community. His community, not his vacation spot down south.
Did Fredo bring along Hunter Biden to yell “axios” at his ordination? What is Alexandria’s pope doing there? Is he also concerned about Panamanian souls?
To be ordained a deacon nowadays, the church prefers some theological training. A M.Div. is typically required by our archdiocese. Does the Metropolis of Mexico, which Panama is a part of, have a lower standard? Low enough to fit this guy? Did he study under a spiritual father? Who signed him off, his dad? Will he hang around New York and Washington now, or will he dedicate his mission to Panama?

We did not stop them. We allowed their debauchery to grow and grow and grow. We condoned it by our non action.
The 2022 Federal $9M civil fraud case Cheleplis v. Karloutsos against the Deacon and his partner (they were pitching a Greek Cannabis deal to Cheleplis) is still on going. The plaintiff survived all motions to dismiss on merit and this case will go to trial in 2026 unless the court grants either side Summary Judgment or unless a settlement is achieved. From reading the public documents , it appears the plaintiff has a strong enough case to get to trial.
So you have a new Deacon still involved in a case like this , with no formal or standard theological training, being ordained way off campus and without any real scrutiny by GOA , with a bunch of bizzaros present, in a country that is known for secrecy, corruption, and lots of Greeks. Hmmmmm. What am I missing here?
Panama is an ideal place for someone to hide especially under those bright ,shiny, expensive red and gold vestments and while parading and blaspheming the Cross for an extra good measure of protection against the Sheriff.

John S is correct, the parish he attends (and where I grew up) is experiencing significant growth. In fact, all three Orthodox parishes in our town have grown. I believe it’s a regional thing.

Do you condone this? The Greek Orthodox need to clean house. They want you churches. They want your money. They want to continue their co-mingling with government. They want your confession while they avoid confessing their own debauchery. Like the Ukraine schism. Staying silent is not an option.

This article really saddens me. I am not the most educated person and I don’t have a lot of theological training. I’m just a common ordinary sinner. When I was ordained to the Diaconate, it was one of the greatest moments of my life. I realized that God had given me a precious gift. I have struggled over the years to try to do my best for the Glory of God! To see the Diaconate used like this is heartbreaking. Don’t these people fear God? Don’t they care about their salvation? Doesn’t God matter at all to them? Maybe I am naive but I don’t think that something as precious and beautiful as the Diaconate should be used like this.
I presume HD stands for Hierodeacon. When my wife was alive, I was ordained to the deaconate; it will be the 49th anniversary next month. I did get to serve one Pascha as a deacon. I was made priest three months later. I shall add you to my unworthy prayers.
We don’t know the mans heart. This could possibly a response to a genuine calling from God. It was extremely difficult for St Paul to be accepted by the Christian community. Please don’t jump to rash judgement.
