Greek Defense Minister Dendias Bows to AIPAC – But Ignores the Greek-American Community

Nikos Dendias came to Washington, met with Pete Hegseth, met with his Jewish friends, shook the right hands, exchanged the right smiles — and avoided the Greek-American community like the plague.

This was not an accident.
It was a choice.

A pattern of selective engagement

Before leaving for the United States, Mr. Dendias appeared at an event at the Municipality of Ellinikon for the inauguration of a statue of Ioannis Kapodistrias. Notably absent from his remarks was any acknowledgment of the Greek-American community that initiated and funded the effort, particularly Vassilis Mataragas, President of the Hellenic American National Council, who personally spearheaded the fundraising. Dendias received an award from HANC and in return… he totally ignored HANC and the Omogenia of the US.

This omission was not incidental. It fits a broader pattern.

Instead of engaging Greek-Americans — a community that remembers the memoranda, the debt humiliation, and the so-called “rescues” that saved European banks while destroying Greek lives — Dendias consistently chooses safer rooms. Controlled audiences. Friendly interlocutors. People who don’t ask who benefited, who paid, and why the Greek middle class was sacrificed.

The unspoken political baggage

For years, critics have pointed to Dendias’s elite legal and political milieu, including his proximity to powerful financial circles. In that discussion, the Rothschild family is often invoked, and it was repeatedly alleged that Dendias has been “the lawyer of the Rothschilds”…

That symbol carries particular weight in Corfu, Dendias’s electoral constituency, where the family maintains a well-known presence and visits regularly.

These doubts have resurfaced forcefully amid renewed public discussion of the Jeffrey Epstein files, which reignited anger toward global elites, unaccountable networks, and the broader financial system Greeks associate with national collapse. The Rothschild name resurfaces as shorthand for creditor power and a bailout architecture that protected banks while hollowing out the Greek state, particularly in connection with the effort to silence the “loose cannon” Yiannis Varoufakis…

This is the political baggage Dendias carries — and never addresses.

Questions he avoids answering

Recently, Mr. Dendias — alongside members of the Kyriakos Mitsotakis government — participated in Holocaust remembrance events in Athens, reportedly wearing a kippah as a gesture of respect.

Respect, however, raises legitimate questions — questions Greek politicians consistently avoid:

• When will Greece demand that Israel’s parliament, the Knesset, officially recognize the Hellenic Genocide of the 20th century — and the Armenian Genocide, upon which the very legal definition of “genocide” was founded?

• When will Greek leaders demand assistance from their Israeli counterparts in pressing Germany for full reparations for the devastation of the 1941–45 occupation — reparations Germany paid generously to Israel, while Greece remains unpaid?

• And finally, when will Greece demand reciprocity — especially at a moment when Israel relies heavily on Greece for strategic depth and regional access?

The emphasis here is on the word demand.

Why the ambition will fail

All of this explains why, despite careful image-building abroad, Dendias faces a hard political ceiling at home.

For all the photo-ops and international endorsements, the Greek people will never vote Nikos Dendias Prime Minister — no matter how much he may want it.

They do not trust politicians who speak the language of sovereignty while moving comfortably among circles associated, rightly or wrongly, with the loss of sovereignty. They do not elevate leaders who court foreign power brokers while avoiding their own diaspora.

Washington may welcome him.
Elite networks may embrace him.

But Greece won’t.

And in the end, that is the only verdict that matters.
