Press freedom in Greece is currently ranked the lowest among all European Union member states, according to the latest assessments by Reporters Without Borders (RSF).
In the 2025 World Press Freedom Index, Greece placed 89th out of 180 countries worldwide, marking its fourth consecutive year at the bottom of the EU table. Although this represents a slight improvement compared to its sharp fall to 108th place in 2022, the country remains an outlier within the bloc of established European democracies.
Over the past fifteen years, Greece has experienced one of the steepest declines in media freedom within the EU. During the late 2000s, the country ranked within the top 40 globally. The downturn accelerated after 2010, culminating in a triple-digit ranking in 2022 before modest stabilization.
What the Watchdogs Report
RSF evaluates countries across five dimensions:
Political context
Legal framework
Economic context
Sociocultural environment
Safety of journalists
In Greece’s case, recurring concerns include:
Concentration of media ownership
Political influence over public broadcasting
Surveillance allegations involving journalists
Strategic lawsuits against public participation (SLAPPs)
Concerns regarding accountability in attacks against journalists
Human Rights Watch has similarly warned of mounting pressure on independent journalism, describing structural weaknesses and intimidation risks.
The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) has raised concerns regarding investigations into violence and threats against journalists.
