The Ultimate Hubris: Karloutsos Now Wants to Write His Own Obituary

This is the ultimate hubris. He spent his life basically making money and exploiting the Greek-American community for himself, and now, at the end, he even wants to write his own obituary.

That, in essence, is what Karloutsos attempts to do in his recent interview (link here). Presented as a reflection, it reads less like introspection and more like an exercise in self-canonization. The article portrays him as a tireless servant of the Church and community, a behind-the-scenes power broker who spent decades “helping” the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese and promoting Hellenism in America. But scratch beneath the carefully crafted narrative and a very different story emerges—one that many Greek-Americans have discussed for years.

Karloutsos built his reputation not merely as a priest but as a political operator. Over the decades, he cultivated extraordinary proximity to power: presidents, lobbyists, wealthy donors, shipping magnates, and church hierarchs. Rather than serving as a humble parish priest, he functioned as a broker between wealth, politics, and ecclesiastical authority. It is precisely why Helleniscope rarely uses the word “Father” before his name. The role he played often looked like the opposite of what a priest is supposed to be.

A simple question illustrates the problem. Ask young people: what does Christianity consider the greatest vice, and what does it consider the greatest virtue? The answers are straightforward: arrogance and humility. Unfortunately, Karloutsos seems to embody the first while lacking the second.

Nobody denies that in more than five decades in the Church, he may have helped some people or causes. But it is surprisingly difficult to identify many examples. Even accomplishments that are often cited—such as the Greek-American community’s access to White House Independence Day events—were allegedly turned into opportunities for personal gain, with participation fees quietly collected from attendees. Stories like this are why so many accounts circulate of piles of cash sitting on his desk in the Hamptons.

At the root of all this lies a fundamental misunderstanding of the Church’s mission. The Church exists to guide souls toward salvation—not to function as a political instrument of Washington, D.C.

That is why the interview’s tone strikes many readers as astonishingly self-congratulatory. Instead of humility or repentance, we are presented with what feels like a carefully curated legacy project. Karloutsos appears determined to define his own historical record before anyone else does.

But history rarely belongs to those who try to write it themselves.

For decades, critics inside the Greek-American community have asked uncomfortable questions. Why did a priest become so deeply embedded in lobbying networks and political consulting? Why did ecclesiastical authority become intertwined with wealthy donors and Washington insiders? And why did the same small circle of names and families repeatedly dominate the institutional life of the Archdiocese?

None of those questions appears in the interview.

Instead, we hear stories about proximity to presidents and access to powerful figures. Yet influence is not virtue. A priest’s calling is service, humility, and spiritual leadership—not proximity to power.

The broader problem is cultural. Parts of the Greek-American institutional world have come to confuse influence with achievement and access with virtue. When figures who spent decades inside elite circles attempt to present themselves as humble servants, the narrative often rings hollow to ordinary members of the community.

The irony becomes obvious when looking at recent events. The Archons—whose “spiritual” advisor, God help us, is Karloutsos—warn the world about political manipulation in the Church and accuse Patriarch Kirill of Moscow of being a pawn of the Kremlin. Yet they seem unable to look in the mirror. The contradiction would be amusing if it were not so revealing.

Writing your own obituary is not a reflection. It is reputation management.

And that is exactly how this interview reads: not as the honest reflection of a priest nearing the end of his career, but as a carefully polished attempt to control the narrative of his legacy.

But legacies are not written by their subjects. They are written by the communities that lived through them.

Of his personal biography, one image remains difficult to shake. As a father, I cannot rid myself of the picture of his son, Michael, sitting at his father’s desk, listening to conversations no child should hear—absorbing the language of lobbying, influence, money, and power instead of enjoying a normal childhood. Growing up in that environment deprived him of the distance a child should have from such a world.

That alone should haunt any father with a measure of conscience. And this is the punishment Karrloutsos will have to suffer for his hubris and lack of morality for as long as he is alive…
