Avramopoulos, “Mr Nothing”: The Amalgam of Greek Corruption

EDITOR’S NOTE (Nick Stamatakis).  In a remarkable interview to SKAI TV, Avramopoulos responds to the main accusation regarding his involvement in “Qatar-gate” and money received through an infamous NGO.  Regarding Avramopoulos claims:

1. His claim that it was “not a real European warrant / just Belgian police” was directly contradicted. Greek Ministry of Citizen Protection sources said the European Arrest Warrant was transmitted through the normal SIRENE/SIS process and sent to the competent Athens appeals prosecutor within 24 hours; they also rejected his suggestion that it had been kept in a drawer or mishandled.
2. His “the Commission cleared me” framing is disputed. Euractiv reports that the European Commission later clarified there was no investigation that exonerated him; its prior approval concerned outside activity/ethics rules, not whether Belgian prosecutors’ Qatargate suspicions were unfounded.
3. Belgian authorities’ position is more serious than he portrayed. Reuters reported that a Belgian investigating judge issued a European arrest warrant in the Qatargate probe, while other reporting says prosecutors link the case to roughly €73,000 in payments from Fight Impunity.
4. His “taxed money can’t be a bribe” argument is rhetoric, not proof. The fact that income was declared may support his defense, but it does not logically disprove Belgian investigators’ theory about whether the payments had an improper purpose. In the interview transcript, he leans heavily on “declared and taxed” as if that ends the question.
