This weekend, in the NY Hamptons, while the rest of the world solemnly observes the commemoration of the beheading of St. John the Forerunner on August 29th, some “Orthodox” organizers have decided to organize a “festive party”, that they have called “Blue Dream”.
Very symbolically, the organizers have selected an entertainer called Konstantinos Argyros, whose last name literally means “silver”…
Why is that name symbolic? Apart from the 30 pieces of silver that everyone knows about, we have to remind ourselves that after Herod “took pleasure” in the belly dance that he foolishly exchanged for “any request in the world”. This “request” turned out to be the beheading of St. John the Forerunner, and the presentation of his head on a platter. In the English language, as a commemoration of the beheading, we still to this day commonly encounter the phrase in daily discourse of “head on a SILVER platter”…
The Orthodox Church officially establishes this day as a strict day of fasting. So strict in fact, that in an odd anomaly, those who are baptized with the name of the saint do NOT celebrate on his day of martyrdom, but have transferred the “festivities” to January 7th (Synaxis). In some parts of Greece, local tradition has gone as far as to honor the day by not even using a knife to slice bread (as a local act of rememberance).
And yet somehow, “Orthodox” individuals from a Greek Orthodox parish decide to sponsor an event on this day, that not only most likely will not be serving fasting food, but more importantly, will have a Greek entertainer named “Silver” establishing the “chanting rhythm” of the faithful in honor of the Saint, and quite possibly including songs of the “tsifteteli” variety (belly-dancing), which was one of the main reasons that led to the beheading of the Saint to begin with. Great way to honor the saint on the commemoration of his beheading, isn’t it? It will be interesting to see how many clergy and Archons attend and dance, too…
According to the above website, the minimum ticket contribution was $1500. So, the “power of silver”, coupled with the “power of tsifteteli” and good food, are strong enough to “decapitate” Orthodox Tradition, as well as the importance of properly commemorating St. John the Forerunner on this most solemn of days.
And what will they do with this “blood-money”? Even the Pharisees back in the day didn’t want to mix up Judas’ returned coins with the Temple’s offerings…they appear in this light to be more logical than the current “leaders”… It’s one thing to argue “we are doing this for the children” (that’s the claim), but what “Orthodox” example are we actually giving to the children when we blatantly disregard our Tradition? And by the way, if we don’t see an accounting where every cent went (including to Argyros and his band), it won’t be entirely clear how much of the money ends up “for the children” anyway…
At least we now know what the “Blue Dream” is… how to (in good conscience) add a single letter and transform the word FASTING into FEASTING…
